Abstract

In a patriarchal country like Indonesia, feminism is still an extremely relevant movement that needs to be manifested to improve women's life. Social media has become the most effective platform to promote the idea of feminism. Nowadays, women have crucial roles during the COVID-19 pandemic such as a working women community participating in the digital age. Many other feminists or woman-related communities, such as beauty pageant groups, contribute to spreading the pandemic awareness using their media while displaying their feminist perspective. Relevant to these issues, this study intends to uncover how women are represented on a beauty pageant social media account during the COVID-19 era to exhibit how the feminism ideology is presented through the women’s representation. This study focuses on analyzing the pictures from the Puteri Indonesia Instagram account (@officialputeriindonesia) posted during the pandemic by employing Kress and van Leeuwen's social semiotics theory of visual grammar complemented by the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method. Results of the study denote that women represent their roles day by day by posting their images while conducting various activities such as social, environmental, cultural and health activities in well-dressed outfits. Women are also portrayed as possessing various characteristics that challenge the patriarchal stereotypes. Furthermore, these indicate the positive portrayal of feminism that concerns giving women more chances to be independent of the stereotypes and be more engaged in various roles regardless of gender.

Abstract

Pelatihan Penggunaan Fitur Canva dalam Pembuatan Media Pembelajaran merupakan sebuah pengabdian masyarakat yang dilaksanakan secara daring pada tanggal 3 Agustus 2023. Kegiatan ini melibatkan 37 peserta dari berbagai kalangan, termasuk mahasiswa, guru, dan dosen. Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan peserta dalam menggunakan Canva sebagai alat untuk menciptakan materi pembelajaran yang menarik dan efektif. Pentingnya topik ini terletak pada peran penting teknologi dalam pendidikan modern. Canva, sebagai alat desain grafis yang user-friendly, memiliki potensi besar untuk memperkaya pengalaman pembelajaran online. Namun, tidak semua individu memiliki pemahaman yang memadai tentang cara menggunakannya secara efektif. Oleh karena itu, pelatihan ini dipilih untuk membekali peserta dengan keterampilan yang relevan dalam pembuatan materi pembelajaran yang kreatif dan interaktif. Metode pelaksanaan pelatihan mencakup sesi teori, demonstrasi praktik, latihan mandiri, dan diskusi. Peserta diberikan pemahaman tentang dasar-dasar Canva dan kemudian diarahkan untuk mengaplikasikan pengetahuan tersebut dalam pembuatan materi pembelajaran secara mandiri. Hasilnya adalah peningkatan keterampilan peserta dalam desain grafis, yang dapat diterapkan dalam konteks pendidikan mereka. Kegiatan ini memiliki dampak yang luas, termasuk peningkatan kualitas pembelajaran online dan dukungan pengembangan sumber daya pendidikan yang lebih baik. Hasil positif dari pelatihan ini menggarisbawahi pentingnya penggunaan teknologi dalam pendidikan modern dan memberikan landasan untuk penelitian lebih lanjut dalam pengembangan metode pembelajaran yang inovatif dan efektif.

Di era di mana teknologi dengan cepat membentuk kembali pendidikan, penelitian ini menyelidiki hasil integrasi AI dalam aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa, memberikan wawasan tentang kemanjuran, keuntungan, dan masa depan akuisisi/pemerolehan bahasa.

Abstract

In the dynamic landscape of education, effective teaching methods for developing English speaking skills continue to evolve. This article analyzes the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in the context of teaching English speaking skills, aiming to evaluate its impact on language learners and provide insights into the effectiveness of this teaching strategy. We explore the theoretical foundations of PBL, analyze its application in language classrooms, and investigate the outcomes of its implementation in the context of English language acquisition.

Abstract

The use of the storytelling method at STITTA Bondowoso is investigated to measure its effectiveness in improving the English speaking skills of students. This research aims to examine the enhancement of students' speaking abilities through the implementation of the Storytelling method. The study falls under the category of qualitative research. The data in this study consist of students' storytelling discourse, with the data source being students enrolled in English courses at STITTA Bondowoso. The method used to collect data is the observe-participate-transcribe method. The researcher observed the context of English language learning in the classroom, particularly related to the Storytelling method. Additionally, interviews were conducted with English language instructors, students, and relevant parties at STITTA regarding the implementation and impact of the Storytelling method on improving students' speaking abilities, supplemented with recording and note-taking techniques. The collected data were then reduced and classified based on their types. Subsequently, data analysis and in-depth interpretation were conducted. The research results indicate that 1) STITTA students experience a significant improvement in speaking abilities in English learning; 2) students feel happy, enthusiastic, and entertained in learning English; 3) students are motivated to compete in English learning; and 4) students are eager to compete for achievements. The findings of this research demonstrate a positive correlation between the use of storytelling techniques and the improvement of students' speaking abilities. The depth and inherent appeal in the storytelling process not only enhance language retention but also create a more interactive and dynamic learning environment. The implications of this research have broad impacts, involving language educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers. This research emphasizes the urgency of integrating innovative methods and experiences to enhance speaking abilities in the context of language education. The contribution of this research lies in strengthening the discourse on effective language pedagogy, emphasizing the importance of adopting diverse and interactive teaching strategies to meet the evolving needs of students in the language learning process.
