Abstract

English proficiency has become an essential skill that significantly influences academic achievement, professional opportunities, and cross-cultural communication. This study investigates the implementation of the English Curriculum at the State Islamic College of Mandailing Natal, focusing on the challenges and opportunities inherent in the current pedagogical framework. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations, involving two lecturers, and thirty students. The analysis revealed that traditional, lecture-based teaching methods, resource limitations of material, and fragmented curriculum delivery pose significant challenges to effective language instruction. Conversely, the study identified promising opportunities, such as the integration of interactive teaching strategies, enhanced use of digital tools, and ongoing professional development for educators, which could bridge the gap between theoretical content and practical application. The findings suggest that targeted curriculum reforms are essential to create a more engaging and effective learning environment, ultimately enhancing students’ English language proficiency and preparing them for academic and professional success.

Abstract

ABSTRACT.Economic pressure, income instability, and high levels of poverty are believed to be triggers of tension in households, which can then lead to acts of violence. This research examines the impact of economic factors on the high rates of violence against women in Indonesia and the legal protection against violence towards women. This study employs normative research, which is also defined as library legal research using various literature as study materials and analytical resources. The influence of economic factors on the high levels of violence against women in Indonesia is complex and significant. Financial instability, women's economic dependence on partners, and economic inequality within households all contribute to the rising risk of violence against women. Legal protection for women who are victims of violence in Indonesia is regulated by laws, such as the Domestic Violence Law and Human Rights Law. By providing skills training, access to business credit, and other economic support, women can become more financially independent and have options to escape violent situations. Keywords: Economy, Violence Against Women.

Abstract

This study compares English language education in Indonesia and Australia, focusing on cross-curricular integration, teacher autonomy, technology use, and the influence of sociopolitical contexts on curriculum design. While both countries aim to enhance English language proficiency, their approaches differ significantly due to contextual factors. In Australia, the decentralized education system promotes teacher autonomy, allowing for innovative, student-centered teaching practices, cross-curricular integration, and frequent use of technology to enhance language learning. In contrast, Indonesia’s centralized education system, heavily influenced by national exam structures, limits the flexibility of teachers and the integration of English across subjects. Despite recent reforms, teachers in Indonesia face challenges in adopting modern pedagogies due to resource constraints and the continued focus on standardized testing. Through a qualitative comparative analysis of policy documents, curriculum standards, and teacher perspectives, this study highlights the importance of localized educational reforms. The findings suggest that fostering teacher autonomy, improving technology access, and reducing exam-driven practices could lead to more effective, cross-curricular English language education in Indonesia. The study also emphasizes the role of sociopolitical factors in shaping curriculum design and calls for greater international collaboration in sharing best practices to enhance English education in both countries.
