Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research was to find out the effectiveness of Roundtable technique in improving students’ Hortatory Exposition Text writing ability and its effectiveness to improve students’ writing in terms of content, grammar, and organization. The research was conducted in SMAN 1Sungai Raya through quasi experimental research method. The subjects of the research were the eleventh grade students of XI IPA 1 and XI IPA 5. The data analysis showed that Roundtable technique is effective in improving students’ ability in writing Hortatory Exposition Text. It was also found that, Roundtable was also effective to improve students’ ability in terms of content and grammar; however it was not highly effective to improve the organization aspect.   Keywords: Roundtable technique, Writing, Hortatory Exposition Text Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui efektivitas dari tehnik Roundtable dalam meningkatkan kemampuan siswa menulis teks Hortatori Eksposisi dan efektivitas dari tehnik Roundtable untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis, dilihat dari segi isi, grammar, dan organisasi. Penelitian  dilakukan di SMAN 1 Sungai Raya melalui metode penelitian quasi experimental. Subyek dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPA 1 dan XI IPA 5. Analisis data menunjukkan bahwa tehnik Roundtable efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks Hortatori Eksposisi. Ini juga ditemukan bahwa, tehnik Roundtable juga efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dilihat dari segi isi dan grammar; meskipun tehnik Roundtable tidak sepenuhnya efektif untuk meningkatkan aspek organisasi.   Kata kunci: Tehnik Roundtable, menulis, Teks Eksposisi Hortatori

Abstract

Abstract This research aims to analyze the use of Talking Chips technique to improve students’ speaking skill to eleventh grade students of SMA Kristen Makedonia Ngabang in Academic Year 2015/2016. This research was one of pre-experimental design, namely one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was eleventh grade students ClassXI IPA 1, which consisted of 20 students. The tool used for collecting the data was pre-test and post-test. The test was reading aloud test. The research finding indicates that the students’ mean score in post-test is 80 higher than their mean score in pre-test which is 63. It is found out that the result of the t-test is 7.79. The t-table with the degree of freedom 19 is 2.093. Because the result of t-test is higher than t-table, the alternative hypothesis “The use of talking chips technique can improve students’ speaking skill to the eleventh grade students of SMA Kristen Makedonia Ngabang in Academic Year 2015/2016” is accepted.Keywords: Talking Chips, Improve, Speaking skill

Abstract

                AbstractThis research was done to investigate how debate technique can improve students’ speaking ability. The form of this research is a classroom action research, in which the subject is the eleventh grade students of SMAN 10 Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018. The subjects of this research were 36 students in XI IPA 3. The data were collected from the students’ score in speaking test, observation checklist, video recording and field notes. The students’ attitude towards the learning process was gathered by observation checklist and field note. The data of speaking was obtained by speaking test which was administered through debate technique. Based on data, the students showed improvement in the process of debate technique. There were two cycles in conducting this research. In cycle I, the students could explore the rules and language features of debate technique, but less in organizing the time. The researcher conducted the cycle II which resulted that, the students could deliver the arguments and comprehend the debate technique. Besides that, the teacher was able to engage students’ performance in speaking spoken form of analytical exposition text by the use debate technique and the students also became more active and enthusiastic in teaching learning process.Key words: Debate Technique, Improve, Speaking Ability

Abstract

AbstractThis research was the use of bio-poem strategy in teaching writing descriptive text on the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Rasau Jaya in Academic Year 2017/2018. The objective of this research was to find out the effectiveness of Bio-poem Strategy in teaching writing descriptive text. The method of this research was pre-experimental research one group pretest-posttest design. The instruments of this research were pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was given to know the ability of the students at the beginning before the treatment, whereas the post-test was given to know the ability of the students after the treatment. The sample of this research were 29 students of X IPA2 of SMAN 1 Rasau Jaya in academic year 2017/2018. The result of this research showed that the mean score of pre-test was 63,33 while the post-test was 87,03. The t-test score (14,54)  was higher than t-table  (2,048) at degree of freedom (df) = N1 (29-1=28) and the result of the effect size was 2,7 where the category was strong effect. The null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected because t-value > t-table (14,54> 2,040) on the level of significance 0,05 and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It also means that the use of bio-poem strategy in teaching writing descriptive text on the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Rasau Jaya in Academic Year 2017/2018 was effective to improve students’ achievement in writing.Keywords: bio-poem strategy, writing, descriptive text, SMAN 1 Rasau Jaya

Abstract

 AbstractThis research aims to find out the students? ability to show figurative languages  and to mention their functions. The research was conducted to the Semester 3 students of English Education Study Program of Tanjungpura University in Academic Year 2016/2017. The research method used is descriptive study. The sample of this research consists of 70 students who are taking Poetry subject in Class A and Class B in Semester-3 of English Education Study Program. The technique of data collecting for this research is measurement test. From the calculation, the mean score of students? ability to show figurative language was 60,29. Therefore, the students? ability to show the expressions of figurative language is categorized as ?Average to Good?. From the computation, the students? mean score to mention the function of figurative language is 55,71, thus this result is categorized as ?Poor to Average?. The results of this study show that the students need more hours to learn about figurative language including the defintions, the functions, and the identification practice.Keywords: Figurative Language, Poem, Descriptive Study

Abstract

Abstract: This thesis is a study on improving students? reading comprehension in narrative text by using Story Map Technique to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 10 Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015. The writer took a classroom action research and the teaching learning process took place in two cycles.  The subjects of this research were the students of grade X IPA 3 which consist of 39 students. From the observation checklist and field notes, it was  found that all the students participated to the activity and did their task well. The students gave positive response to all the explanation and could use the story map technique effectively. For these results, it was concluded that story map technique improved students? reading comprehension skill in narrative text in their Story Map Technique enabled the students to store information in their personal schema more efficiently and facilitated to recall the story elements more completely and accurately.   Key words : Story Map technique, reading, narrative text Abstrak : Penelitian ini adaah sebuah studi dalam meningkatkan kemampuan membaca teks naratif dengan menggunakan teknik story map pada siswa kelas X di SMA Negeri 10 Pontianak pada tahun akademik 2014/2015. Penulis melaksanakan peneitian tindakan kelas dan proses pembelajaran dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus. Subjek peneitian adalah siswa pada kelas X IPA 3 yang terdiri dari 39 siswa. Berdasarkan data yang diambil dari embar observasi dan catatan kaki, ditemukan bahwa semua siswa berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan di kelas dan melaksanakan tugas mereka secara baik. Siswa juga memberikan respon yang positif terhadap penjelasan guru dan dapat menggunakan teknik story map secara efektif. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat disimpukan bahwa teknik story map dapat meningkatkankemampuan membaca naratif teks siswa karena teknik ini membuat siswa mampu untuk memasukan informasi dalam skema mereka sendiri secara lebih efisien dan memfasilitasi siswa untuk mengulas kembali elemen-elemen dalam cerita secara lebih lengkap dan akurat.   Kata kunci : teknik Story Map, membaca, teks naratif

Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted on the effect of Diary Writing was effective in teaching writing a recount text to the eighth grade students of SMPN 11 Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018. The purposes of this research is to know the effectiveness of diary writing to improve student? writing ability of a recount text. Sample of this research are Class VIII A was the experimental group and class VIII F was the control group. The experimental group given a treatment that is diary writing and the control group did not given the treatment. To know the effectiveness of diary writing the writer gave a pretest and posttest. Pretest before treatment and posttest after treatment. The students? write a diary writing with the generic structure of recount text. Diary writing and recount text is a text to tell the reader about past experience. Abstract

AbstractThis research was about improving students’ descriptive text writing by using picture word inductive model (PWIM). The student problems were that they find it difficult to develop ideas for their writing and had difficulties to find appropriate words to convey their ideas. They were weak at vocabulary, especially using an adjective to describe something and in using verbs in the present tense. The method of this research was a classroom action research on 42 students of class VIII C of State Junior High School 12 Pontianak in the academic year of 2016/2017. PWIM has helped students to generate and organize ideas in identifying and labeling the picture. By looking at the pictures, students gained motivation and inspiration about what word the students wrote for make paragraph of descriptive text. In the first cycle, some students were difficult to write the descriptive text, besides they did not know how to develop their ideas. In the second cycle, the students understood the kinds of text and developing the ideas. In here the teacher used guided questions to help the students to get more ideas. It was found out that using picture word inductive model (PWIM), the students’ descriptive text writing improved.Key Words: Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM), writing, descriptive text, classroom action  research

Abstract

Abstract: The research was conducted to identify and analyze figurative language (personification, metaphor, hyperbole and paradox) in Adele’s selected song lyrics. They are covered with two types of figurative language, comparative (personification and metaphor) and contradictive (hyperbole and paradox). The research used descriptive qualitative method. Procedure of analysis were firstly looking for Adele’s song lyrics from the website Azlyrics.com, secondly reading and copying the lyrics, thirdly identifying the sentences or phrases which have figurative language, fourthly describing about figurative language that was taken, and lastly giving conclusion. The research identified twenty five figurative languages in song lyrics.There are eight lines identified as personification, eleven lines identified as metaphor, three lines identified as hyperbole, and four lines identified as paradox. In conclusion, the dominant figurative language is metaphor, which is included into comparative figurative language. Keywords: Figurative Language, Adele’s Song Lyrics Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisa gaya bahasa (personifikasi, metafora, hiperbola dan paradoks) dalam lirik-lirik lagu terpilih Adele. Gaya bahasa ini terbagi ke dalam dua tipe, yaitu perbandingan (personifikasi dan metafora) dan pertentangan (hiperbola dan paradoks). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Prosedur analisa nya ialah pertama mencari lirik lagu Adele dari situs Azlyrics.com, kedua membaca dan menyalin lirik lagu tersebut, ketiga mengidentifikasi kalimat-kalimat atau frasa-frasa yang mengandung gaya bahasa, keempat mendeskripsikan tentang gaya bahasa yang telah didapat, dan terakhir memberikan kesimpulan. Penelitian ini mengidentifikasi dua puluh lima gaya bahasa yang terdapat dalam lirik lagu. Terdapat delapan baris yang diidentifikasi merupakan gaya bahasa personifikasi, sebelas baris merupakan gaya bahasa metafora, tiga baris merupakan gaya bahasa hiperbola, dan empat baris merupakan gaya bahasa paradoks. Kesimpulannya, gaya bahasa yang paling sering digunakan adalah metafora yang termasuk ke dalam gaya bahasa perpandingan. Kata kunci: Gaya bahasa, Lirik-Lirik Lagu Adele

Abstract

AbstractThis research discussed about increasing Students’ Speaking Ability Using Sequenced Pictures Story, A Classroom Action Research on the eighth grade Students of SMP Negeri 7 Pontianak in Academic Year 2017/2018. The focus was on pronunciation aspect. The research problem was “How does Sequenced Pictures Story technique improve students’ speaking ability of year-8 students of SMP Negeri 7 Pontianak  in academic year 2017/2018?” In teaching-learning process, the participants were 25 students of VIII B class of which the teacher and the researcher was a collaborator. The result of this research showed that students’ speaking ability, especially in pronunciation had increased. In first cycle, students had some problems in pronouncing words, and pause inappropriately, while in the second cycle, they had time to practice more, thus their problems were solved. In conclusion, Sequenced Pictures Story could be applied to increase students’ speaking ability, especially pronunciation.Key words: Sequenced Pictures Story, Speaking Ability, Pronunciation
