Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang strategi penolakan yang digunakan oleh masyarakat dalam konteks jual beli pada media sosial Facebook dalam grup Kendari Jual Beli (KJB) di Kota Kendari. Penelitian ini dilandasi keunikan-keunikan berbahasa yang ditemukan dalam transaksi jual beli online maupun transaksi langsung oleh masyarakat Kota Kendari. Dalam transaksi jual beli, ditemukan bentuk penolakan yang beragam ketika pembeli dan penjual bertransaksi. Untuk dapat menolak penawaran penjual secara halus atau sopan, pembeli menggunakan strategi-strategi tertentu supaya ungkapan penolakan dapat diterima dengan baik. Dengan begitu, kesalahpahaman dapat diminimalisir dan proses transaksi dalam kegiatan jual beli dapat mencapai kesepakatan bertransaksi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, ditemukan strategi dalam tuturan penolakan yaitu strategi tindak tutur literal dan tidak literal. Bentuk-bentuk penolakan dalam jual beli online di grup KJB Kendari berupa penolakan dengan mengucapkan terimakasih, penolakan dengan menawar harga, penolakan dengan melakukan penghindaran, penolakan dengan mempertahankan minat, penolakan dengan menyatakan komentar, penolakan dengan meminta maaf, penolakan dengan berjanji, penolakan dengan menggunakan kata jangan, penolakan dengan memberikan alasan, dan penolakan dengan mengusulkan pilihan lain.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out how the feminist consumerism discourse described in “Dove” beauty in terms of gender identity, fashion, beauty standards and feminine beauty ideology by Talbot (2020). Feminist consumerism discourse is an ideology that forms a person or group carry out the process of using or consuming goods produced in a sustainable manner based only on desires, not needs. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this research is Dove advertisements was taken from the Dove US YouTube channel. Data collection was done by downloading, watching, transcribing, selecting and coding based on Talbot’s theory. Data analysis cam carried out by presenting data, describing the context and situation, interpreting the data, concluding the results of data analysis. The data for this research are 11 feminist consumerism discourse data in Dove advertisements to support analytical process that the researcher is conducting. The researcher found that several elements of the feminist consumerism discourse that can be seen in the Dove advertisements video are in four aspects, such as gendered identity, fashion, beauty standards and feminine beauty ideology. From the several aspects above, the feminist consumerism discourse is found in Dove advertisements and there are also persuasive elements.

Abstract

The study is aimed to describe the types and the functions of code mixing in Satu Persen-Indonesian Life School Youtube channel. Thelander’s theory used to describe the types of code mixing and Marasigan’s theory used to analyze the functions of code mixing. There are two data sources in the research; the first data are three videos from Satu Persen on Youtube as primary data and a video script for each video as secondary data. The study used the descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by watching, downloading, transcribing, identifying, coding, and classifying the data. The data analysis was done by presenting, describing, interpreting and concluding the data. The finding shows that there are fifteen data about code mixing in Satu Persen’s videos. It reveals that there are six types of code-mixing found in the videos namely word insertion, phrase insertion, hybrid insertion, repetition insertion, idiom insertion and clause insertion. Meanwhile, the functions of code mixing used are to quote somebody else, interjection, addressee specification, repetition, message qualification, personalization and objectification and facility expression.

Abstract

This article intended to show the literacy program which aims to develop Community Reading Parks (TBM) as an effort to improve literacy activities in rural areas. The object is TBM Bina Cendekia, located in Tampo, Napabalano District, Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. TBM Bina Cendekia Tampo is one of the literacy activity places in rural areas that was voluntarily established in 2011 and received an operational permit in 2016. However, its management and literacy services are still very limited. The problem faced by management team is the lack of community motivation to visit the TBM that made to TBM is like suspended. The solutions offered in this partnership activity are, one of them, socializing a variety of literacy activities that are entertainment-oriented and educational. Reading activities remain the focus of activities by presenting an atmosphere of "mobile stalls". Other activities that can be carried out are activities to grow interests and talents, discussions, and competitions or exhibitions.

Abstract

This research aims to describe politeness strategies performed by Piers Morgan and Donald Trump in an interview held on the 25th of January 2018 at the World Economy Forum in Davos, Switzerland. It is used the theory of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). This research employs a descriptive qualitative method by taking the transcription of the interview. The data analysis reported that the participants of the interview employed positive and negative politeness strategies to save one another’s faces. The result of the research shows that the participants of the interview attempt to decrease and keep the social distance between them through positive and negative politeness strategies. As a journalist, Piers Morgan tries to handle the conversation to run smoothly. He employs more negative politeness strategies than Donald Trump who has higher social status as the President of the USA. In this event, powerless participants need to be more polite than powerful participants.

Abstract

Pandemic Covid 19 outbreak has been, in one side, creating social distance for sellers and buyers to the market transaction directly, but, the other side, it is also opening an online trading platform through social media. One of the trading social media platforms is Kendari Jual Beli (KJB) group in facebook, where during pandemic has increased its role in facilitating people in selling and buying goods or products. Through the process of transaction in KJB group, it is performed the communication that involved speect act. This article intends to describe illocutionary speect act in online commerce transaction in Facebook in Kendari city. It is based on the increasing prevalence of utilizing social media in online transaction in Kendari. The type of research used is qualitative research because the data in the form of words or sentences with a descriptive method. The data are taken from the conversations between the sellers and buyers at KJB. The research was conducted with the data collection stage with documentation and note-taking techniques. Furthermore, the data analysis and conclusion were carried out. The result of the study indicated that the speech act between the seller and the buyer at KJB is classified into five types of speech acts, that are directive, commissive, expressive, representatives, and declarative. In commerce transaction, buyers and sellers used the strategies. They are literal and non-literal speech acts

Abstract

This research aims to describe the use of illocutionary acts in the film A Quite Place. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. This research uses Searle's theory to find the verbal and nonverbal utterances of all the characters included in the illocutionary act theory. Data collection is carried out by downloading, reading, watching, and classifying. The data analysis technique is to present, describe, interpret, and conclude the results of the analysis. Based on the theories provided, the data is analyzed one by one to determine the context and type of illocutionary act used. The results of the research show that there are four types of illocutionary acts used by all the characters in the film A Quiet Place 2018. The instructions present the dominant frequencies of the five types of illocutionary acts. There are six that contain directive actions. The assertive one has four data. Expressive has four data, the lowest frequency of illocutionary acts is commissive, there are two data. This type of declaration was not found in this study. The data most often found in this film is directive with six data and the least is commissive with two data. Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that the problems that occurred in this research have been answered so that the research objective has been found and explained clearly, namely how illocutionary acts are used in the film A Quite Place using Searle's theory.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the racism utterances in the Just Mercy movie using racism theory based on Dijk's approach. Researcher used qualitative descriptive research as a method. The data source in this research was taken from the Just Mercy movie. Data collection was carried out through watching, Note-Taking, Screen shooting, Identifying and grouping the data based on the theory of racism based on Dijk's approach. Data analysis techniques are presenting the data, describing the data, interpreting and analyzing the data resulting from this research. The research results show that racist behavior in the Just Mercy movie is depicted based on Dijk's theory in the aspects of nonverbal structures, sounds, syntax, lexicon, local (sentence) meaning, global discourse meaning (topics), schema (conventional forms of global discourse organization), rhetorical devices, speech acts, and interaction. This aspect shows racist actions in the form of facial expressions, voice, speech, actions and use of language styles. Racism in this research then provides an accurate picture of racist behavior towards black people as a reflection of the existing system of prejudice and stereotypes. As a results of the analysis, the researcher found that the movie had elements of racism in which Bryan Stevenson became a victim of racism. The researchers found seven data. Therefore, racial discrimination can also be seen in language discourse. Language also plays an important role in forming and maintaining the ideology of racism.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the trauma experienced by Kendari Mobile Legends players due to cyberbullying. The research employs the trauma discourse theory proposed by Indradjadja and Zaumseil. This study's data was collected through interviews with Kendari Mobile Legends players conducted by researchers. In an interview with eight gamers who played the Mobile Legends game, queries pertaining to bullying and its traumatic effects were posed. This investigation employed a qualitative-descriptive approach. In the meantime, the data analysis technique involves presenting, describing, interpreting, and concluding the data. The results revealed that the gamers exhibit trauma symptoms, as indicated by their responses. Among the symptoms of trauma they experienced were a sense of shock and disillusionment as a result of the inappropriate remarks they heard during a game. The other symptoms are dread and concern that they will be subjected to additional cyberbullying. As a sign of their inability to embrace it, gamers frequently reflect on the cyberbullying incident and its origins. Consequently, they become more readily offended, irritable, and whiny. In the meantime, their commonplace feelings of safety and security transform into inner turmoil and hopelessness, revealing their reluctance to exist or live. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that, as a consequence of cyberbullying, Mobile Legend players in Kendari experienced all symptoms of trauma.

Abstract

In political communication, maxim violation as well as its implicature are inevitable. It shows a dynamic of communication particularly how to influence audience perception through argumentative strategies. This study  tries to explore the maxim violation and implicature performed by  Mike Pence and Kamala Harris in the U.S. Vice Presidential Debate in 2020. The study applied the cooperative principle theory particularly maxim violation and implicature by Paul Grice. Descriptive qualitative method was employed through the research. The main source of the data are the utterances of both vice Presidents’candidates which contain violation of maxim and implicature. The result shows that during the debate, there were 10 data of maxim quantity, 3 data of maxim quality, 6 maxim of relevance, and 1 data of maxim of manner. Violation of the maxim of quantity is the most common in the debate. because the candidates giving answers that seem exaggerated to, giving answers that are somewhat not so clear and irrelevant answers to distract the public. It also reveals that generalized conversational implicature is dominant used because political communication is highly context-dependent, and politicians frequently need to convey nuanced messages without being too direct.
