Abstract

A weblog (also called a blog) has been pervasively used as an alternative language learning technology in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings. However, there are still limited attempts to shed more lights on the (a) integration of various applications in the blog and (b) how they can be maximized for teaching and learning purposes in the context of Indonesian higher education. Therefore, this study aims to explore issues concerning the use of a tutor blog run in an English Education Study Program of a private university. The exploration focuses on the potentials of the tutor blog and their relevance to current blogging activities as well as draws on related literature and reflective experiences in utilizing the blog in EFL classrooms. This study seems to confirm the potentials of the tutor blog, as asserted by Campbell (2003). The analysis also reveals some possibilities of integrating the blog into other technological applications, which should be beneficial for pre-service and in-service EFL teachers who wish to utilize blogs to support their pedagogical agendas. The study concludes with directions for further studies.

Abstract

The COVID-19 situation causes a sudden and unexpected shift of face-to-face pedagogy to emergency remote teaching mode. In that transition, teachers often do not have enough space and time to explore various technology to support their teaching and learning practices that should be done flexibly in multiple places and times. In response, the primary purposes of this article are to introduce a technology tool called Screencast-O-Matic (SOM), its potentials, and possible practices of using SOM that EFL lecturers might adopt for their teaching and learning purposes, specifically in the current pandemic era. Some of the practices discussed in this paper are the use of SOM to: record a video lecturer on how to write a paper following an APA format, give video-based feedback to students’ work, make a digital video presentation, and be a digital mirror that helps students review their speaking performance before they do an actual video presentation. The discussions of the paper are supported by some of the authors’ actual experiences in using SOM in their classrooms, related research findings, and literature. Ideas for future research are presented.

Abstract

As a modified replication of Bellingham’s (2004) investigation, this case study primarily explores experiences of 30s Indonesian university students in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at English Language Education Study Program, Masyarakat University Indonesia (ED-DU). The study specifically investigates cases of two ED-DU students who shared their experiences in learning EFL in their age. I recalled their experiences using an open-ended questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. I continued to collate and summarize the data into themes. Eventually, the present findings reveal six learning patterns of the students, confirm the existence of L2 acquisition for adult learners stated by Bellingham’s investigation, and provide some evidence that EFL learning acquisition is not limited by age.

Abstract

Researchers in the past have explored practices of Project Based Learning (PBL) in various educational contexts. Nevertheless, previous studies that examine project-based learning in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts are still limited in numbers particularly through the eyes of Indonesian university students. This study aims to look into meanings of PBL in learning Second Language Acquisition (SLA) at English Language Education Program, Dunia University Indonesia. The study specifically described how three students in the class felt about PBL as implemented in two main classroom projects, how they experienced doing it, and how they provided meaning to it. The students’ experiences were recalled through an in-depth phenomenological interview. The results of the study were the experiences in the form of narratives and my interpretation of emerging themes in the narratives as the meanings of PBL in learning SLA. The study appeared to continue positive trends of PBL practices in English language teaching and learning specifically in contentbased instructions.

Abstract

This community service aims to inform various technology to support teaching and learning activities in an online English classroom. This community service, which was an online training, was conducted on April 11, 2022, from 1.00-to 2.30 p.m. through the Google Meet platform. Seventeen lecturers of the English Language Education Program at Universitas Bunda Mulia Jakarta joined the training. In the presentation session, the author first emphasized the essence of formulating learning objectives to achieve by students before a lecturer decided to integrate technology into a classroom. The author then informed factors that could support students’ engagement in a learning process; those factors could later be used as a foundation to design English language learning activities supported by technology. The session was continued by presenting various technology, such as Whiteboard.Fi, Famous People Lesson, TED-Ed Riddle, Newsela, Lesson Writer, Screencast-o-Matic, dan Google Docs. At this session, the training participants were invited to try the technology together with the author. Then, to optimize the use of technology in a learning process, the author suggested the participants always reflect on their teaching practices, see learning activities that did not work well, then find solutions or coping strategies to deal with those issues. The author also suggested the participants have a regular monthly meeting where they can meet and try together any technology that might be used to support students to achieve their learning objectives. The training ended with a discussion and question and answer session on the authors presentation.

Abstract

Conducted in a 2-hour online workshop session format in November 2021, this community service program aims to share my practical experiences as an Indonesian researcher on finding current research topics, specifically in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and learning. The participants of this online workshop were seventeen (17) lecturers in the English Language Education program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Conducted synchronously in a Zoom platform, the workshop started with my presentation on three main points: (1) “my ways” in finding research topics, (2) my published articles that might provide writing ideas for the participants, and (3) reasons why the participants need to write and publish their work in an academic journal. This presentation session was ended by a question and answer session from the participants. Some reflective questions for Indonesian researchers and ideas for future community service programs were also presented.

Abstract

The literature has overwhelmingly explained challenges in writing the undergraduate thesis from students’ perspectives. Yet, there is a scarcity of research that presents the perspectives of thesis supervisors about the challenges experienced by their EFL students and, at the same time, on possible solutions to solve them. This qualitative study presented two English as a Foreign Language (EFL) lecturers’ narratives on challenges EFL students experienced when writing their undergraduate thesis and on solutions to deal with those challenges. The research data was collected through a reflective essay written by the lecturers, who then met in an online synchronous meeting to discuss what they wrote in the essay. While the data analysis communicated various things, the students’ challenges in writing their undergraduate thesis were commonly about finding a research topic, writing the literature review, and using various academic vocabulary. In light of the results, possible solutions to solve the challenges, practical recommendations for EFL thesis writing and teaching activities, and guiding questions for further research were presented. This study should benefit EFL thesis supervisors to reflect on their own experiences, find areas for improvement and enhance their thesis supervisory practices. This study also hopes to benefit EFL students who wish to learn practical strategies to progress with their undergraduate thesis.
