Abstract

English instruction has been claimed to be challenging for some non-native students and with the addition of online environment, unpreprared students may experience anxiety, fear, or stress. This article aimed to analyse students’ anxiety across various school levels and explore their views from the anxiety components in EFL online instruction in Indonesia. Framed within a mixed methods research design, this study employed a large-scale survey of 928 students and an interview with 10 voluntary respondents. Data were collected using means of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCAS) questionnaire and an interview guide. Using the validity check, 30 survey items were valid with a good fit (α=.89). Data from the questionnaire responses were analysed using SPSS to find frequencies of the respondents’ anxiety scores and categorized using Oetting’s Scale and the data from the interview transcripts were analysed using Interactive Model Analysis. The result showed students in various school levels were mildly anxious during the EFL online instruction. This means that students might be potentially anxious due to dynamic online learning situations when they attend their EFL instructions. Meanwhile, the interview revealed that they were anxious when having an English test and experiencing connection problems during online learning. They overcame them by learning the materials more and communicating their connectivity situations with the teachers. Teachers and policy makers should consider providing learning supports to deal with students’ anxiety in the virtual learning context.

Abstract

Feedback is one of the essential things for students to help them improve and develop their writing skills. Nowadays, the kinds of feedback are varied; a form that has often been used since the pandemic is electronic written feedback. This study aims to find out the students' perceptions toward the use of electronic written feedback. This study was conducted in the English Language Education Program at a private university in Salatiga. This study included 34 students registered in an Academic Writing class during the even semester 2023. The data for this study were gathered from semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. Both thematic analysis and statistical analysis were used to analyze the data from the interview and questionnaires. The findings revealed that the students’ attitudes toward electronic feedback were positive. Moreover, this study found weaknesses and strengths in using written feedback electronically. Practical recommendations for maximizing the potential of the electronic written feedback and directions for future research are also presented in this paper.

Abstract

This study explores university students’ perceptions of the usefulness of technology, the frequency of using technology, a technology tool that the students like the most, and perceptions if the technology they like the most helps them meet the characteristics of good writing. To meet the research goals, sixty-seven undergraduate students of a private university in Indonesia were asked to respond to a close-ended online questionnaire that surveyed their perceptions of using technology in their academic writing classroom. The findings indicate that an online dictionary, Google search engine, and Google translate are the technology that the students frequently use and consider useful to enhance their writing. Further, an online grammar checker is found to be a technology tool that the students like the most, and they feel that the tool can help them meet the characteristics of good writing. Recommendations for teaching practices using the technology and directions for further research are discussed.

Abstract

This paper mainly aims to explore issues and challenges in using technology to support teaching and learning in various schools located on three different islands in Indonesia, such as in Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, and Papua islands. The exploration was done through a holistic literature review of 30 national and local newspapers and online articles relevant to the aim of the study. We performed a peer-debriefing activity to present our review analysis to each other, comment on it, and made necessary revisions to our analysis to ensure the credibility of our review. While the results communicated various things, we could highlight some commonalities: unequal distribution of technology support or facilities in schools, creative ways to support teaching and learning practices regardless of the very minimum facilities that schools have, and continuous support from the Indonesian government and private sectors to improve school technology-supported facilities. We then discussed those commonalities in light of the relevant literature and their implications for teaching and learning to benefit school teachers or educational practitioners planning to teach in schools outside Java with minimal technological-related school facilities.

Abstract

Teachers play essential roles in ensuring the success of technology integration and maximizing the potential of technology in theteaching and learning practices. Therefore, it is crucial to know somefactors that might hinder teachers from successfully integrating and fully maximizing technologys potential in various educational levels, such as those in English as a Foreign Language (henceforth called EFL) contexts. To achieve the objective of the study, the researcher examined twenty empirical research articles from sixteen peer-reviewed journals from 2009-2020 using Google Scholar, JSTOR, and ScienceDirect databases. The analysis results could be categorized into five main themes: (1) dealing with too many school administrative tasks, (2) lacking skills to use technology, (3) lacking relevant technology training, (4) dealing with constraints to join technology training, and (5) lacking access to technology. The discussions of each theme in light of the relevant literature, practical solutions to deal with the situations, and directions for further research are presented.

Abstract

This Community Service activity (PkM) aims to train the use of simple technology to support English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and learning activities. This PkM activity, in the form of training, was carried out online through the Google Meet platform on Friday, November 3, 2023, at 07.30-09.00 WIB. The main participants of this training were 10 English teachers who were students of the 2023 Teacher Profession Program in Service (PPG-Daljab) at the English Education Study Program, Satya Wacana Christian University. In the material presentation session, the author introduced various technologies and their potential to support EFL teaching and learning practices. Some of the potentials explored from the technology include searching for descriptive reading texts of famous people from around the world, displaying word clouds related to the most occurring (English) vocabulary in a reading text, presenting vocabulary exercises in English in a more interesting way, searching for English learning materials online, and practicing finding the meaning and pronouncing vocabulary in English. In the session, the participants and the author try the technology. Finally, the author asked the participants to evaluate the training session presented by the author.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to serve 33 high school students in Kristen Kalam Kudus Sukoharjo Senior High School, a private school in Sukoharjo, Central Java, Indonesia. More specifically, the program was in the form of virtual English Conversation Club (ECC) activities for eight meetings. This ECC program was done primarily via Zoom Meeting and Google Classroom, facilitated by eight lectures and nine lecturer assistants. Each meeting lasted for 45 minutes. The facilitating lecturer started the ECC session by introducing learning activities, giving instructions, and opportunities for the participants to practice their English speaking with the lecturer's assistants in the breakout rooms. Afterward, ECC participants were asked to upload a short video based on the online practice to their social media accounts (like TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube). Details of activities and various technology tools in each ECC session were presented in this paper. Although there were some challenges, all the ECC activities went as the lecturers had planned. This paper ends with several suggestions for the improvement of similar ECC activities in the future.

Abstract

Academic writing is a fundamental competency that should be mastered by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. However, to do so is often a challenging task for the students. That challenge might affect students’ writing motivation. This study aims to explore possible factors that motivate EFL students’ motivation in an academic writing class. To achieve that goal, the researchers first conducted a literature review of 15 relevant articles published in national and international journals. Then, the researchers conducted a semi-structured interview with four students to discuss the results of the literature review analysis. With a rigorous peer debriefing data analysis strategy, the research findings presented four main themes as the answers to the research question. The themes were related to technology and visual aids, learning goals, students' relationships and social environment, and lecturers' excellent competency. The findings were then discussed in light of the relevant literature. Practical recommendations (i.e., providing various writing template, spending enough time for writing consultation, and encouraging students to stay motivated in the writing class) for EFL lecturers teaching the academic writing class and ideas for future research, which included expanding the research participants and contexts to confirm or challenge the motivational factors revealed in the current study, were presented.
