Abstract

Singapore has undertaken coastal reclamation activities since 1976 in the southwest of Singapore's main island bordering the Nipa Island, Riau Archipelago, Indonesia. In reclamation, Singapore took sand from Nipa Island Indonesia bounded by the sea with Singapore. This reclamation will have an impact on several things that is the maritime boundaries and the territorial sovereignty of both countries. This article is attempted to describe how the impact of Singapore coastal reclamation against the maritime boundary and territorial sovereignty of Indonesia-Singapore. The author is using the concept of State Sovereigntynd the International Maritime Law in UNCLOS 1982. Furthermore, this paper is using the descriptive method with the qualitative approach. The data collection technique is literature study consisting of books, journals, and including data from the reliable website in supporting the explanation of this paper. Based on the provisions of UNCLOS 1982, it can be concluded that Singapore's coastal reclamation has no effect on the maritime boundary between Indonesia and Singapore, where maritime boundaries remain at baseline before Singapore reclamates. However, Singapore's coastal reclamation could threaten Indonesia's territorial sovereignty as the mainland of Singapore approaching Nipa Island Indonesia can assume that Singapore wants to take control of Nipa Island, especially the Nipa Island region is strategically located because of its near to the Singapore Strait which is an international shipping line. Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the issue of Indonesia's migrant domestic workers within the framework of ASEAN Community beyond 2015. With the government's plan to stop the sending of Indonesia's migrant domestic worker abroad in 2017, one of possible direct effects would be the rise of unemployment rate. On other hand, one of the consequences of the integrated ASEAN Economic Community is the free movement of people, commodities and services between ASEAN member countries. Higher level of people's flow will increase connectivity as well competition. Using a qualitative approach of method, this paper elaborates the discourse of the Indonesia's migrant domestic workers, using the societal and economic security perspective as analytical framework.

Abstract

This article aims to analyse the extent to which the regulatory authority established by Law Number 43 of 2008 has been implemented to manage the development of Indonesia’s border areas. The central and regional governments envision the forefront of the state to optimise the welfare of people living in Indonesia's border areas with neighbouring countries. Due to the widening economic gap with Sarawak, less optimal coordination between central and regional governments in handling state border areas, and limited infrastructure and social facilities, the border area poses a complex threat to the sovereignty of Indonesia. We conducted descriptive normative research by exploring several sources from the laws and regulations, books, journal articles, and online news articles. Additionally, we incorporated field research as our data collection method in West Kalimantan Province. The author observed the border area and conducted expert interviews with the local government, the manager of the border gate at Entikong, Sanggau Regency, and the West Kalimantan Provincial government representative. Normatively, the authority has been divided and defined in Law Number 43 of 2008. However, a lack of coordination in implementing the law was caused by the ambiguous hierarchy of authority among the stakeholders due to the physical capabilities to reach the areas. We argue that the closest coverage of authoritative bodies in giving services to the people will boost the people’s welfare in the border areas.

Abstract

This study aimed to explain the factors that cause the uneffective role of Indonesian diaspora in the development of the nation. The issue of diaspora continues to be a concern of Joko Widodo’s first term. However, over time, compared to the diaspora in China or India, the Indonesian diaspora has not played a very maximal role. We conducted a literature study by understanding each source text. The data were analysed using qualitative analysis based on the role theory and the concept of diaspora. This study found three important factors that determine the inhibiting role of the Indonesian diaspora, such as the dual citizenship factor, the understanding of Indonesian society which is still weak on the existence of the diaspora, and the connectivity factor.

Abstract

This paper seeks to explain the implementation of the ASEAN Consensus 2017 on the issue of migrant workers’ protection. Entikong was chosen as a research object because of its position as Indonesia’s border gate that distributes migrant workers to Malaysia. The problem of migrant workers still an obstacle to ASEAN member states. The consensus brings a new hope towards a better protection on the issue of migrant workers. Nevertheless, Indonesia has been struggling with the cases of migrant workers. This paper employs the concept of multilevel governance and human security. We argue that at the national and local level, the implementation was quite good. There were some different understandings regarding the consensus. Local government or vertical institution in the region was not well informed about the document, but their acts on the issue of migrant workers were implementing the spirit of the consensus. On the international level, Indonesia also participated in conducting an action plan on the implementation of ASEAN Consensus and promoted other ASEAN members to create a legally binding instrument on the issue of migrant workers protection in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Environmental ethics  is human-wise behavior related to all components of the environment. Environmental ethics talks about human behavior towards nature and the view of the universe, including nature, humans, and other living things. A moral view is needed to know the relevance of the theory of anthropocentrism and ecocentrism. Students must know which theories can benefit human life and how to maintain a balance between nature and humans. Belief in the theory will bring up pros and cons; therefore, the relevance that can be found from the two theories is education that understands environmental ethics as a balance. Relevance gained trust in these two theories will bring up pros and cons. We found out students in Indonesia had their main critizism towards each philosophical thought. We also found that the emerging technology and modernisation has been an issue on the debate. A better environmental ethics understanding would serve a better goal of balancing both view of   anthropocentrism and ecocentrism
