Abstract

Abstract

Architectural education, which include design studio normally involving physical interaction, in the times of Covid-19 pandemic, needs to be conducted in an online or hybrid format. Online or hybrid format was commonly applied to prevent or minimize the spread of coronavirus. This study intends to identify differences and correlation between sense of community and satisfaction regarding learning process by comparing architecture students participating in offline and online studio. This study measures and compares architecture student performance in offline/ physical design studio and online/ virtual design studio. Sense of community and student satisfaction are operational variables used to measure and compare student performance in this study. Sense of community and satisfaction were chosen because the study focuses on student performance from the students' perspective.  Data were collected through an online questionnaire applying Likert scale to architecture students involved in a hybrid design studio and then analyzed by applying statistical method. The analysis results do not show significant differences on sense of community and satisfaction regarding learning process, between students participating in offline studio and those of online studio. However, this study identifies that sense of community correlates with the satisfaction regarding learning process, in offline and online architectural design studios. The correlation indicates that sense of community and student satisfaction can be used to signify students"™ performance in offline, online or hybrid architectural design studios. This study recommends offline or hybrid mode of learning as the optimum format for architecture design studio in the post-Covid-19 era.

Abstract

A mosque is a place of worship for Muslims that emphasizes the concept of Rahmatan Lil Alamin, meaning to bring blessings to all people. Based on this statement, a mosque serves as a safe and comfortable space for performing ritual prayers and as a venue for accommodating social activities for its congregants. The function of mosques evolves, especially during the month of Ramadan. It becomes more active and serves various purposes beyond prayers, including religious, political, economic, educational, commercial, social, and cultural activities. All of these activities aim to foster social interaction among Muslim communities. This research aims to uncover the behavior and movements of worshippers during both Salat ritual and non-Salat activities within mosque spaces. The study focuses on Al-Lathiif Mosque in Bandung, known for its vibrant young community, which engages in diverse and active activities. The steps taken to achieve the research objectives are as follows: (1) Identifying the indicators to reveal social sustainability through literature studies; (2) Mapping the behavior of congregants and the utilization of mosque spaces during Salat activities; (3) Mapping the behavior of congregants and the utilization of mosque spaces during non-Salat activities; (4) Distributing questionnaires related to social sustainability indicators regarding space utilization in the mosque; (4) Concluding the application of social sustainability concepts in mosque spaces. The analysis results reveal that social sustainability is optimally achieved in the flexibility of spaces in a mosque.

Abstract

Accessibility for the elderly in public spaces, especially mosques, is very important to create an inclusive and safe environment. The Grand Mosque of Bandung, as one of the main mosques in the city center with very diverse visitors, is an important study to examine the extent to which its architectural design supports the comfort and convenience of the elderly in worship. This mosque also functions as a center for social and cultural activities that are often visited by the elderly as an active community. With the increasing number of elderly people and the need for accessible spaces, this study is important to assess the suitability of the mosque design with accessibility standards. This study uses observations and interviews of the elderly as well as evaluation of architectural elements based on PUPR Ministerial Regulation No. 14/2017 and PP No. 16/2021, focusing on the dimensions of the stairs, the width of the access path, the slope of the ramp, and supporting facilities such as toilets and ablution. The results show that several aspects such as uneven stairs, limited ramps, and less than optimal facilities do not meet accessibility standards. These findings emphasize the need for design improvements to create a more inclusive and comfortable mosque for the elderly, as well as being a recommendation for mosque managers and designers.

Abstract

Blind people who are included in the category of people with disabilities experience impairments and obstacles to their sense of sight. To be able to do orientation and mobility, blind people need information about environmental concepts and self-concepts. This of course requires training that is rehabilitative in nature. Sentra Wyata Guna Bandung is a building that functions as a rehabilitation and training center for blind people so that they can play an active role in community life. But in reality, the design of Sentra Wyata Guna has problems in terms of comfort and safety for blind people to do activities in it. This can hinder the rehabilitation and training process in it. This research aims to understand the behavior and needs of blind people for orientation and mobility with the concept of behavioral architecture; and find how the physical environment can stimulate the non-visual senses of blind people. This concept will be divided into five architectural design criteria based on behavioral setting theory. The study started with a literature review on the needs of blind people and behavioral concepts specific to blind people. Field data analysis detected the problems and potential of the Sentra Wyata Guna building.
