Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The Covid-19 outbreak is a global fear. This fear is partly triggered by diverse media representation. Information containing representations of COVID-19 has the potential to reduce fear. However, in reality, representations through these symbols have the potential to be used by those in power to exercise their power, especially to get rid of their political opponents through representation. The representation of Habib Rizieq Shihab as a violator of health protocols is suspected to be an attempt by the authorities to eliminate his political opponents through fear of the COVID-19 outbreak in symbols spread in the media. This research wants to answer how the administration of fear in symbols regarding violations of the COVID-19 protocol by religious figures in the representation of Habib Rizieq Shihab in Indonesian online news. This research explores the concept and criticizes the concept of administration of fear, which is a construct from dromology-based theories by Paul Virilio. This research uses Barthes' textual semiotics method (Barthes' 5 codes), which analyzes several online news texts in Indonesia. From the results of the analysis, it is revealed that the media representation of Habib Rizieq Shihab is a form of administration of fear carried out by the authorities through symbols about COVID-19 in the media by constructing logistics of perception and environmental construction that represents Habib Rizieq based on fear of the epidemic and fear of Islam (Islamophobia).

This research was conducted through a qualitative approach using a normative judicial method in analyzing the Constitutional Court’s Decision No.38/PPU-XIX/2021 concerning the authority to conduct journalist competency tests. Secondary data of this research was obtained through literature and document studies. This research found that there has been no final clarification on the settlement of the legal dispute between DP and BNSP over the authority to conduct journalist competency tests following the Constitutional Court’s Decision No. 38/PPU-XIX/2021 rejecting in full the applicants’ plea. The legal implication of the decision is that both DP and BNSP can continue to conduct journalist competency tests respectively.

Abstract

Cancel culture has become a significant influence in Indonesia’s digital entertainment sphere. This study investigates how the cancel culture surrounding the Indonesian remake of A Business Proposal emerges and diffuses across social media networks. This study aims to identify network structures, central actors, and the dissemination of moral discourse among users.  This study uses a social network analysis approach supported by sentiment and lexical analyses from 515 tweets, which were harvested using a Python-based script from the 1st of January until the 19th of February 2025, and visualized using Gephi. Data were cleaned (deduplication, language filtering, token cleaning), a user–interaction network was constructed, and centrality plus community detection were applied. The findings reveal five major clusters and a zero betweenness value, indicating strong interconnectedness and the absence of intermediaries. The dominant cluster, led by kdrama_menfess, amplified evaluative narratives shaped by fandom identity and cultural expectations. Sentiment is largely neutral, with salient negative cues tied to casting and adaptation quality. Cancel culture here functions as networked moral regulation driven by fandom solidarity and enabled by Computer-Mediated Communication within Castells’ Network Society. The findings clarify how audience expectations, affect, and network structure jointly shape acceptance of local adaptations, offering practical cues for casting, promotion, and community management in Indonesia’s film industry.

Abstract

Structure of the media in Indonesia is still dominated by men who lack of gender sensitivity so that the role of women journalists as agents of change towards gender awareness is important to discuss. This study aims to determine the factors that make up the awareness, values and attitudes of women journalists on gender, and the influence of media and community structure in forming the gender awareness of women journalists. As a case study, a journalist of the largest newspaper in Indonesia, Kompas, namely Maria Hartiningsih is chosen. The study is based on the concept of gendered-perspective journalism as a practice of journalistic that informs and questions inequality of the relationship between men and women. The study uses a qualitative approach with the method of Critical Discourse Analysis model of Norman Fairclough. Text analysis is conducted to examine the writings of Maria Hartiningsih in Kompas related to gender issues. The results show that at the textual level—since she started joining Kompas—Maria Hartiningsih’s writing already highlighted problems of women, street children, and poverty. Her awareness and perspective on gender is a process conducted through the experience of reporting, discussions, and reading books related to gender. In the case of 'Maria', Kompas as an institution provides her with freedom to pour her thoughts.

Abstract

There are many pornographic sites on social media nowadays. In 2018, The Indonesian Child Protection Commission found that 91.58% of 6,000 adolescents had been exposed to pornography. Adolescents are those   in the age group that is very vulnerable to the effects of pornography. This study aims to identify and examine urban adolescents’ reception of pornography on social media. The selection of urban adolescents as research objects was because they have easier access to social media than other age groups. The sample of this research was taken from adolescents in DKI Jakarta and Surabaya considering that these two cities are among the six cities with the highest number of adolescents in Indonesia. This study uses the reception theory presented by Stuart Hall who suggests that audiences can play an active role in decoding messages. In addition, this study employs a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative approach. The method used was the reception analysis which focuses on production, text, and audience in a framework that can be utilized to analyze the relationship of each element. The informants in this study were adolescents in DKI Jakarta and Surabaya who were aged between 15 and 19 years. Informants' preference was conducted purposively by considering variations based on social and cultural context backgrounds. The results showed that all the informants had watched pornography on social media, either intentionally or not. In addition, four out of ten informants are in an Oppositional Position for rejecting messages conveyed in pornographic broadcasts on social media. Meanwhile, six other adolescents are in a Negotiated Position, where they disagree with pornography on social media but can accept the meaning of pornography because it satisfies their curiosity.
