Abstract

Abstract

The excess of body fat in the body can be associated with the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other metabolic diseases. Activities which can reduce the body fat percentage is a structured physical activity. This study aims to identify the effect of the structured physical activity on the decrease in body fat percentage on members of the gymnastics studio. This study used one group of pretest-posttest design. The intervention was an aerobic exercise, conducted for a minimum duration of 150 minutes per week, and followed up for three months. The samples were selected by using purposive sampling andwere collected by measuring the respondent's weight with Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis at the beginning and the end of this study. The data were analyzed by using paired sample t-test. The result showed that the average of the body fat percentage on the pre-test was 33.156 %, and on the post-test was 32.920 %. Based on the data, there was a decrease in a body fat percentage on pre-test and post-test in 13 out of 25 respondents. The p-value was 0.357, and it can be concluded that the structured physical activity did not have a significant effect on the decreasein body fat percentage.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the stability of daily blood glucose level, satiety level, and safety after using Diabetasol® in comparison with controlled nutrition solid food. Diabetasol® is low glycemic index foods contained of isomaltulose, resistant dextrin, and inulin. This study is a preliminary, prospective, randomized, open-ended study, and involving 30 male and female type 2 DM subjects. Blood glucose was measured with continuous glucose monitoring within 48 hours after every visit. The satiety level was measured with satiety quotient questionnaire with visual analog scale (VAS) at interval of 0, 15, 30, 60, and 120 minutes. The evaluation of side effects was based on the occurrence of hypoglycemia and digestive problems during the treatment period. Eventhough not stastistically significant, Diabetasol® leads to decreased glycemic response and longer satiety compared to controlled nutrition solid foods, with no serious side effects.

Abstract

Thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) has a critical role in Graves’ disease (GD). GD is an autoimmune disease which is multifactorial. Environmental factors can affect the epigenetic, a changes in gene expression without any changes in base sequence of the DNA. One of the epigenetic types is methylation. This study aims to determine the status of DNA methylation in TSHR gene in patients with GD to be one of the predictors of recurrence. This study used a case control design with 58 samples of GD patients divided into 29 groups of recurrence and 29 groups of non-recurrence. DNA methylation examination used methylation-specific PCR (MSP) method. Our result found that DNA methylation profile of GD in Indonesia were 5% with complete DNA methylation, 17% complete DNA unmethylation and 78 partial DNA methylation. Statistical analysis showed no significant different between recurrence and non-recurrence group (p>0.05). Nevertheless, our result showed no patient with complete status DNA methylation was found in recurrence group. This shows that in recurrence occur a reduction of DNA methylation resulting in increasing of TSHR production. Thus, DNA methylation in TSHR gene might be has a role in the risk of recurrence GD.
