Abstract

Low bone mineral density is a clinical condition in patients with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a degenerative metabolic disease characterized by reduced bone mass and bone microarchitecture; so it risks for fracture. The prevalence of osteoporosis increases with the increasing life expectancy and preponderance of females. This paper aims to determine the influence of decreased bone mineral density of the missing teeth terhadap tooth loss which contributes to early prevention of tooth loss in people with osteoporosis and osteopenic. The method used to assess bone mineral density reduction is by using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) while the loss of teeth can be seen by clinical and radiological examination of the oral cavity with a panoramic technique. Tooth loss is a condition that must be experienced by the end of dental periodontal disease which is present in a progressive inflammatory process, periodontal attachment loss and decreased alveolar bone supporting the teeth. The high rate of decline in bone mineral density can lead to faster loss of teeth because of hormone deficiency in elderly women or men. This condition affects the activity of osteoclast and osteoblast, causing abnormalities bone turnover on the whole body including the alveolar bone and showed relationship between decreased of bone mineral density with tooth loss in the elderly. The conclusion is the presence of hormone deficiency in the process of interaction osteoblast and osteoclast leads to decreased bone mineral density in elderly include in jaw bone and it causes rapid tooth loss.

Abstract

Cancers are serious diseases with various etiologies mainly due to unhealthy dietary habits and lifestyles. However, almost all drugs used for anti-cancer therapy are usually toxic and generally affect normal healthy cells, hence the search for new com-pounds that are effective, non-toxic and natural. In particular, algae contain many valuable components with great anti-cancer potential. Carrageenan is a general term describing a group of sulphated polysaccharides in red algae that present a major com-ponent of the cell wall and interstitial space functioning as a forming compound and providing intercellular adhesion and inter-cellular signalling. Carrageenan isolated from red algae has been the object of drug discovery over the past few decades as it exhibits anti-cancer capabilities.

Abstract

Growth is based on the concept of increasing the size and number of cells, development refers to the psychological condition and behavior of a person. The main stage of the process of growth and development in the formation of the human body is the formation of the craniofacial, which will then form the embryology of the oral cavity. The development and growth of the oral ca-vity occurs prenatally and postnatally starting from the fourth day which will continue into adulthood and experience negative growth during aging. Every human being goes through a period of prenatal growth. There are three periods in prenatal growth, namely preimplantation, embryonic and fetal. The three periods are sequential and continuous in forming the fetus. In general, humans have a pattern of growth and development which is the result of the interaction of many factors that affect growth and development. Anything can happen prenatally and postnatally, so attention and knowledge about embryology and develop-ment of the maxilla and mandible are needed.

Abstract

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory response due to bacterial infection of the supporting tissues of the teeth. Porphyromonas gingivalis is a gram-negative anaerobic bacterium associated with periodontal disease. An adjunctive therapy to mechanical pe-riodontal therapy is the use of antibiotics, although long-term use can cause some hypersensitivity effects, toxic reactions. Many bacteria are resistant to antibiotics, so in this study Gracilaria extract was chosen as an additional therapy to reduce the effects of resistance to antibiotics. extract as an additional therapy to reduce the effects of such resistance. Gracilaria has carotene con-tent which has very important biological functions as an antioxidant, and immunostimulator that can prevent disease, anti-inflamma-tory, anti-stress, anti-aging, and skin protection from ultraviolet light. ultraviolet rays. Gracilaria also has the ability to capture free radicals. Gracilaria contains antibacterial bioactive compounds, namely alkaloids, flavonoids, and steroids that can inhibit the growth of P.aeruginosa and Staphylococcus. This paper explores the effectiveness of Gracilaria sp in the treatment of periodontitis.

Abstract

Green algae as one of the marine natural resources which is included in the main seaweed is found in many coastal areas of In-donesia. The bioactive component that acts as an antibacterial agent in green algae type Ulva lactuca is ulvan polysaccharide extract. Ulvan is a cell wall polysaccharide that accounts for 9-36% dry weight of Ulva biomass and is mainly composed of rhamnose sulfate, uronic acid (glucuronic acid and iduronic acid) and xylose. Polysaccharide ulvan extracted from Ulva lactuca can be one of the antimicrobial materials used in mouthwash in dentistry.

Abstract

Wound healing in oral tissues requires a series of processes to close the wound and prevent infection. Sea urchin (SU) collagen can be utilised in biomedical applications such as periodontal tissue regeneration and wound healing in oral and maxillofacial surgi-cal treatments. Research shows that marine-sourced collagen can promote wound healing and skin regeneration in animals. This paper explores the potential of SU collagen as a biomaterial for wound healing applications in oral tissues. This collagen is sourced from marine connective tissues such as echinoderms and SU. Further research is needed to understand the potential of marine-sourced collagen in wound care and tissue regeneration in humans. The SU collagen shows favourable mechanical properties and potential for sustainable production. The SU collagen is promising for use in wound healing and tissue regeneration especially in oral tissues. It is concluded that SU collagen extract can accelerate wound healing and reduce scar tissue formation.

Abstract

Production and cultivation of tilapia fish (TF) (Oreochromis niloticus) in Indonesia is the second largest after China. However, TF waste is a potential pathogen. The waste of TF can be managed into valuable products, such as collagen extracts that can be used in dentistry in several dosage forms, such as sponges, hydrogels, membranes, and nano collagen fibres. There are various thera-peutic applications of collagen extracts from TF skin, especially in the field of dentistry, such as in the treatment of wounds heal-ing, dry socket healing, bone necrosis, grafting, flap surgery, and periodontal tissue regeneration. TF skin can be used as an ex-cellent and economical regenerative treatment to provide cost-effective treatment. However, larger-scale studies worldwide should be conducted before it is officially used widely.

Abstract

The oral cavity is one part of the body that is important to keep healthy; dental plaque which is an aggregation of bacteria, espe-cially those caused by Staphylococcus aureus, can cause various oral diseases. The brown alga Eisenia bicyclis has potential as an antibacterial agent due to the content of bioactive compounds such as phlorotannin, fucosterol, and fucoidan that have an-tibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. This article examines the antibacterial effect of E.bicyclis against S. au-reus in the context of oral health. The study showed that E.bicyclis extract inhibited the growth of S.aureus by the mechanism of increasing cell membrane permeability and inhibiting biofilm formation. In addition, phlorotannin compounds from E.bicyclis also showed synergistic effects in enhancing antimicrobial activity. It is concluded that E.bicyclis has the potential to be developed as a natural antibacterial therapy in oral health, especially to control the growth and plaque formation caused by S.aureus.

Abstract

Oral regenerative therapy requires agents with antibacterial and osteogenic properties to address hard tissue damage caused by infection or trauma. Galam leaves (Melaleuca cajuputi), a plant native to Southeast Asia, are known to contain bioactive com-pounds such as flavonoids, polyphenols, alkaloids, and saponins that support tissue healing. This article systematically reviews the potential of galam leaf extract as an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and osteogenic agent in oral regenerative therapy, based on literature evaluating the biological activity and safety of galam leaf extract, particularly against oral pathogenic bacteria and its ability to stimulate osteogenesis. Galam leaf extract has been proven to have antibacterial activity against S.mutans, Lactobacil-lus plantarum, and P.gingivalis. Its combination with tricalcium silicate cement increases the number of odontoblast-like cells and lymphocytes. Toxicity tests indicate that the extract is safe for topical use even at high concentrations. It is concluded that galam leaf extract is a candidate for the development of biomaterials in regenerative therapy due to its multifunctional and safe properties.

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is an important pathogen often associated with serious infections and antibiotic resistance. In the search for alternative treatments, marine Actinomycetes are a potential source due to their ability to produce bioactive enzymes, one of which is keratinase. In addition to its function in keratin degradation, this enzyme is also known to have potential as an antibacte-rial agent. This article explores the extraction of keratinase enzymes from marine Actinomycetes isolates and tests their antibac-terial activity against S.aureus, as a first step in the utilisation of marine biotechnology for medical and pharmaceutical purposes. This systematic review was compiled based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Initial search results of 135 articles were then excluded, yielding four articles that showed that marine Ac-tinomycetes have antibacterial potential against S.aureus. It was concluded that the extraction of keratinase enzymes from ma-rine Actinomycetes showed significant antibacterial activity against S.aureus, indicating the potential of keratinase as an alter-native agent for treating gram-positive bacterial infections, especially amid increasing resistance to antibiotics.
