Abstract

This research tries to investigate, analyse why new English learners produce English silent letters when they communicate. There are many new leaners of English can easily produce some non-standard English pronunciation dealing with those silent letters which may lead English Expert misinterpret the meaning which finally misunderstand take place. This study also focuses on the standard English pronunciation based on either British or American English pronunciation. Winda P., at al, agree that one thing that always happened in the errors of speaking English is silence in a letter. They define silent letter as a letter which is not pronounced in a word, it is present in spelling but missed in pronunciation. While Podhaizer (1998), states that the silent letters are letters which are not sounded. Therefore, English learners, when facing with silent letter words, were often confused about the pronunciation. New learners don not realize that they make mistake in pronouncing several words when they communicate in English. English silent letters are that you must write that letter in some particular words, but you must not read it. If you do not write it the words is not complete and it is wrong word in terms of spelling. Then if you pronounce it, based on you un-conscious knowledge, automatically you then produce non-standard English pronunciation. Most new learners commonly make mistake in pronouncing the following words: For examples the words half, doubt, debt, combing, climbing, plumber and so on. Musa Abubakar clarifies that perfect pronunciation as one of the effective language skills in communication greatly affects teaching, learning and usage of English as a second language because it enhances transfer of information from source to target. Further, Bishnu P.M. defines that English is an un phonetic language. There is no match between the letter that we write and the sound we produce. Finally, the writer tries to list those silent letters derived from several different academic resources.

Abstract

This study investigated the implementation of podcast-based media in improving students' confidence in speaking English at Darul Maaref School Foundation in Satun, Thailand. Using Classroom Action Research methodology, the study involved 30 eighth-grade students who initially demonstrated low speaking confidence, with 70% receiving incomplete grades. The research was conducted in two cycles following Burns' model: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data collection included speaking tests and classroom observations focusing on language, pronunciation, attitude, and clarity. The results showed a significant increase in students' speaking confidence, with the average score increasing from 52 in the pre-cycle to 63 in Cycle I (11% increase) and 87 in Cycle II (24% increase), representing a total increase of approximately 62%. Observations of student activity also increased from 77% engagement in Cycle I to 92% in Cycle II. These findings suggest that podcast-based media addresses common challenges in speaking skill development, including speaking anxiety, by providing a flexible, engaging, and less intimidating platform. This research contributes to an innovative pedagogical approach that responds to contemporary educational needs in English language teaching and offers teachers a practical tool to improve students' speaking confidence in a 21st-century global context.

Abstract

The challenges brought by Covid-19 have threatened not only the economy and health fields but also the educational sectors. In light of education, this issue has led to the swift migration of the learning process from conventional mode to online learning which has resulted in another bottleneck. The current study explores the perception of EFL Indonesian college students about the challenges and benefits of learning speaking through the online system during the Covid-19 outbreak. Forty-five college students participated in this study and were inquired through a semi-structured questionnaire in the weeks following the final term examinations for the academic year 2020-2021. The data was probed by using grounded theory proposed by Creswell. The findings exposed that effectiveness, online benefits, and improvement opportunities were the benefits obtained by students from the online learning. Meanwhile, distraction and information overload, a technical error in online learning technology and internet connectivity matters as well as limited interaction and inadequate support were hindrances that often hampered the students.  Consequently, this scholarly paper also provides advice on the essence of the readiness of adequate facilities and the collaboration from stakeholders; government, teachers, students, and parents to successfully implement online learning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Augmented Reality (AR)-based learning media in enhancing English vocabulary mastery among eighth-grade students at SMP IT AL-IHYA. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) following the Kurt Lewin model, conducted in two cycles. Data collection involved observations, interviews, pre-tests, post-tests, and documentation. The results showed a significant improvement in students' vocabulary mastery. The pre-cycle average score was 64.48 with only 24% of students reaching the minimum mastery level. After the implementation of AR-based learning in Cycle I, the average score increased to 70 with 40% of students achieving mastery. In Cycle II, the class average rose sharply to 87.4, with 100% of students achieving mastery. Observation of student activity also improved, from 52.38% in the pre-cycle to 90.47% in Cycle II. Based on the N-Gain Score of 0.645, the effectiveness of the intervention was categorized as moderate. These findings suggest that AR-based learning not only improves vocabulary mastery but also increases student engagement in the learning process.
