Abstract

Background: The Dental and Oral Hospital of Andalas University (RSGM UNAND) in West Sumatra serves as both a healthcare provider and an academic institution. In a competitive healthcare environment, hospitals face challenges in maintaining and improving their service performance and visibility. Objective: This study aims to identify internal and external factors influencing the competitiveness of RSGM UNAND and to formulate appropriate strategic responses using SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis. Methods: This research employed a qualitative case study approach. Data collection involved in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, direct observation of hospital operations, and document analysis to obtain comprehensive insights into institutional strengths, weaknesses, and external dynamics. Results: The findings indicate that RSGM UNAND's main strengths include its strategic location within the university campus, availability of modern dental equipment, and a highly competent healthcare workforce. However, weaknesses were found in limited promotional efforts and underdeveloped collaborations with health insurance providers. Opportunities identified include potential expansion to 24-hour service and increased use of social media for promotion. Major threats involve rising competition from surrounding private dental hospitals and clinics. Conclusion: To improve its competitiveness, RSGM UNAND must strengthen its promotional strategies, build strategic partnerships with health insurance networks, and invest in digital technologies that support service expansion and public engagement.

Abstract

Abstract

Dental caries is a pervasive non-communicable disease, affecting approximately 80% of children in Indonesia. Children in the transitional dentition phase (aged 7–8 years) frequently lack awareness regarding oral health. Traditional educational models often fail to instill long-term behavioral changes. This study aims to evaluate the short-term impact of an interactive multimodal educational intervention grounded in the Health Belief Model on the early caries detection knowledge of 7-8-year-old schoolchildren in an urban middle-income setting. A quantitative pre-experimental, one-group pre-test and post-test design was utilized. A convenience sample of 57 grade 2 students from SD IT Cendikia Andalas participated. The intervention deployed tactile dental models, posters, and animated videos. The curriculum detailed anatomical function, caries etiology, early visual detection, and preventive strategies. Knowledge was measured using a validated 5-item questionnaire focusing on pathophysiology and visual cueing. Descriptive statistics included Medians and Interquartile Ranges (IQR). Hypothesis testing utilized the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The cohort demonstrated a statistically significant short-term increase in knowledge. The pre-test Median score was 4.0 (IQR: 3.0–4.0), which increased post-intervention to a Median of 5.0 (IQR: 4.0–5.0) (p < 0.001). Both female (p < 0.001) and male (p < 0.001) subgroups showed significant improvements. Identification of white spot lesions improved from 35.1% to 87.7%. In conclusion, multimodal education is associated with a significant short-term increase in early caries detection knowledge among young schoolchildren. Integrating such interactive modules into longitudinal curricula alongside parental involvement is recommended for sustained public health impact.

Abstract

Introduction: Dental caries remains the most prevalent chronic disease in children worldwide, disproportionately affecting school-age populations in low- and middle-income countries. This quasi-experimental study evaluated the effectiveness of storytelling versus traditional lecture methods in improving oral health knowledge among children aged 7–8 years (mean age 7.4 ± 0.5 years) in Padang, Indonesia. Methods: A total of 110 children were enrolled and assigned to storytelling (n=55) and lecture (n=55) groups, with 108 children (54 per group) completing the study. Pre-test and post-test knowledge assessments were conducted using a validated 15-item questionnaire (Content Validity Index = 0.87, Cronbach’s α = 0.73). Results: The storytelling group demonstrated a significant mean score increase of +1.28 points (95% CI: 0.97–1.59, p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 1.12), while the lecture group showed a non-significant gain of +0.35 points (95% CI: -0.13 to 0.83, p = 0.152, Cohen’s d = 0.22). Post-intervention, 83.3% of the storytelling group achieved “good” knowledge levels compared to 51.9% in the lecture group (OR = 4.66, 95% CI: 1.88–11.54, p < 0.001; NNT = 3.2). Children with lower baseline knowledge benefited most from storytelling (r = 0.51, p < 0.010). Children perceived storytelling as more enjoyable (92.6% vs 51.9%), easier to understand (88.9% vs 59.3%), and more motivating for oral hygiene practice (81.5% vs 50.0%). Conclusion: Storytelling was significantly more effective than lectures in enhancing oral health knowledge, particularly among children with limited baseline understanding, supporting its implementation as a school-based oral health promotion strategy.
