Abstract

Introduction: Rotavirus infection is one of the main causes of severe diarrhea and dehydration in toddlers. Climate variation is one of the factors that influence the outbreak of infectious diseases. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between climate variations and the incidence of rotavirus diarrhea among patients at the Soerya Mother and Child Hospital, Sidoarjo District in 2016 – 2019. Methods: This study used an ecological study with the Pearson correlation test. Rotavirus infection data was taken from the Viral Diarrhea Laboratory, Institute of Tropical Diseases, Universitas Airlangga, which was derived from fecal samples of patients with acute gastroenteritis with the unit of analysis at the individual level living in Sidoarjo district. Meanwhile, climate variation data were obtained from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency Indonesia official website with units of analysis at the population level. Results and Discussion: The number of rotavirus diarrhea for 48 months as many as 149 cases with an average air temperature of 28.2℃, rainfall of 191.4 mm², humidity of 77.31%, and wind speed of 2.82 knots. There was a weak correlation between rainfall and the incidence of rotavirus diarrhea (p=0.01 r=0.367) and a weak correlation with humidity (p=0.016; r=0.347). Meanwhile, the air temperature (p=0.909 r=0.017) and wind speed (p=0.272 r=-0.162) had no relationship with the incidence. Conclusion: Rainfall and high humidity are factors associated with the prevalence of rotavirus diarrhea in children under-five years in the Sidoarjo District.

Abstract

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) virus was reported as an outbreak in Indonesia in April 2022 and belonged to serotype O/ME-SA/Ind-2001e is spread in the country. This study aimed to detect the causative agent based on clinical symptoms in cattle that have the vesicle in the mouth and hooves. A total of 25 samples were collected during August 2022 from Lamongan and Surabaya, Indonesia. FMD was identified in 58% (7/12) using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), respectively. The samples were performed using universal primers with 328 bp length for primary diagnosis of FMD. These findings indicate that the spread of FMD viruses is highly contagious, so rapid and accurate diagnosis is needed as an effort to control and monitor FMD viruses.

Abstract

Background: Diarrhea is the first cause of death for children under five years of age worldwide. In Indonesia, diarrhea cases due to rotavirus infection tend to be detected throughout the year. Purpose: The study was to determine the epidemiology of diarrhea cases due to rotavirus infection of pediatric patients in Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya based on the variables of person, place, and time. Methods: This type of research uses both descriptive and quantitative methods. The samples used were cases of rotavirus infection in toddlers in Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya in 2015–2019. Results: From 2015 to 2019, there were about 110 cases (31.98%) of acute diarrhea caused by rotavirus infection at Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. The findings revealed that the majority of rotavirus infections (42.73%) occurred in children aged 6-11 months followed 12-23 months (35.45%) and were male (56.36%). The highest cumulative incidence was observed in August 2018 and February 2029, with a value of 1,0. Rotavirus infection was most common among children living in Gubeng sub-District, with 19 cases (17.27%). Conclusion: Epidemiological studies of rotavirus infection by person, place, and time reveal the distribution of disease cases and enable targeted interventions to respond to the disease.

Abstract

Community development programs have the potential to enhance adolescents' awareness of the risks associated with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the preventive measures that can be taken to mitigate those risks, including HIV/AIDS. The International Community Development program was organized by the Research Centre on Global Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases (RC-GERID) of Universitas Airlangga. The topic of the program was the prevention of  STIs and HIV/AIDS among adolescent boarding school students. The objective of this activity is to enhance the student's knowledge and comprehension of STIs and HIV/AIDS, as well as the measures that can be taken to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases. The participants were 100 Madrasah Tahfidz Al-Quran An-Nur students in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The methodology employed in this activity comprised pre-test and post-test questionnaires completed by participants, lectures, question-and-answer sessions, and discussions. The results demonstrated a statistically significant increase in knowledge and understanding of STIs, HIV/AIDS, and infection prevention among adolescent students, with an average increase of 22.0% in pre-test and post-test scores. This indicates that the educational material was effectively conveyed to the participants. The activity was conducted in an orderly, conducive, and interactive manner. Further community service with similar activities to be better than now   Abstrak Remaja merupakan kelompok yang rentan terhadap IMS dengan jumlah terbesar mengidap HIV/AIDS.
