Abstract

Abstract

Character education in elementary schools still faces obstacles due to the dominance of lecture methods and a lack of contextual learning experiences. The Character Garden Program was developed as a community service innovation to strengthen teachers' capacity in integrating character values through school garden-based learning in Indihiang District, Tasikmalaya City. The activity was implemented using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving lecturers, teachers, principals, and the education community. A total of 39 teachers from seven elementary schools participated in training, module development, and implementation of the character garden in their respective schools. The results showed a significant increase in teachers' understanding of character education integration, with an average pre-test score of 61.05 increasing to 77.24 (p < 0.001). Among students, responsible behavior increased from 2.61 to 3.40, and mutual cooperation from 2.63 to 3.36. Teachers also reported positive changes in the form of increased student discipline and environmental awareness. This program produced a Character Garden module that has been used in seven schools and registered as IPR. This activity has had an impact on improving teachers' pedagogical competence and the formation of a character-based school culture. The next program recommendation is to expand the implementation of the Character Garden by utilizing teacher working groups to implement learning activities that foster character education in a concrete way. Long-term mentoring is also needed to strengthen the program's sustainability and evaluate the impact of student character in real-life contexts.

Abstract

Teacher competence is an important factor in optimizing the use of instructional media to create meaningful musical experiences for students, particularly among classroom teachers who do not have a formal educational background in music but are still responsible for teaching music. This study aims to analyze the influence of elementary school teachers’ competence on the use of music learning media. This research employs an explanatory quantitative approach involving a sample of 271 elementary school teachers from five regions in West Java Province, namely Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, Banjar, Garut, and Pangandaran, selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire (reliability α = 0.648 for teacher competence and α = 0.874 for media use) and analyzed using simple linear regression. The results indicate a positive and significant effect of teacher competence on the use of music learning media, with a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05) and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.443. This finding shows that teacher competence explains 44.3% of the variation in the use of learning media. The higher the level of teacher competence, the more effective the use of instructional media becomes. Therefore, strengthening teachers’ professional and pedagogical competence is a key factor in improving the quality and effectiveness of music learning in elementary schools

Abstract

Scouting extracurricular activities are additional activities conducted outside regular class hours and are mandatory in every school. Their purpose is to help students develop good disciplinary character. The importance of strengthening disciplinary character values is based on the fact that many deviant behaviors contrary to disciplinary norms are currently occurring, such as arriving late to school, not wearing uniforms according to school regulations, and not completing assignments on time. Therefore, this study aims to determine the role of scouting activities in shaping the disciplinary character of elementary school students. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, and data were collected through a literature study. The results of the study indicate that scouting extracurricular activities have a positive impact on the development of students’ disciplinary character. This is because scouting activities are considered interesting, making it easier for students to be trained and habituated to discipline through these activities. Thus, it can be concluded that scouting extracurricular activities play an important role in shaping the disciplinary character of elementary school students.

Abstract

Understanding environmental conditions that have the potential to cause disasters is an essential competency that should be instilled in elementary school students as part of efforts to develop disaster preparedness from an early age. Disasters can occur unexpectedly and have significant impacts on various aspects of human life; therefore, educational initiatives are needed to enhance students’ knowledge and readiness in dealing with emergency situations. This study aims to analyze the utilization of natural disaster comics as a facilitator of disaster preparedness understanding among elementary school students through a literature review. The method employed in this study was a literature review by examining various scientific articles, books, and relevant documents related to instructional media, disaster education, disaster preparedness, and the use of comics in learning. Data were collected through a search of relevant scientific sources, particularly through Google Scholar, and were subsequently analyzed using content analysis techniques. The findings indicate that natural disaster comics have significant potential as an effective medium for improving students’ understanding of disaster-related concepts and preparedness measures. The presentation of information through a combination of text and engaging visual illustrations can increase students’ learning interest, engagement, and retention of the material. Furthermore, disaster comics help students understand appropriate actions before, during, and after a disaster through contextual and easily comprehensible scenarios. Therefore, natural disaster comics can serve as an innovative alternative in disaster education, as they facilitate students’ understanding of disaster preparedness while fostering attitudes of awareness, responsiveness, and readiness toward potential disaster risks in their surrounding environment.
