Abstract

Compost is the final substance in the fermentation process of piles of waste/plant litter including animal carcasses. The fermentation needs to be accelerated with human assistance. This saprotrophic fungi isolate has the potential to be developed as a compost inoculum in the manufacture of organic fertilizers. Compost induced with fungal inoculum is able to produce organic fertilizer relatively quickly and contains high plant nutrients. The prospect of the need for organic fertilizers is quite high in supporting organic agriculture, so it is necessary to disseminate information on science and technology and training to the public on the manufacture of organic fertilizers by induction of saprotrophic fungi inoculum. In addition, the availability of garden plant litter is abundant and free from chemical residues. The results of this activity showed that there was an increase in the knowledge and understanding of the training participants in making compost from leaf litter. The average increase in the knowledge of the trainees is 25,25 %.

Abstract

Abstract

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) as one of the faculties at the University of Lampung has many trees that produce organic waste in the form of leaf litter every day, and this is very potential to be used as a substrate for compost. Compost is the final substance of a fermentation process of piles of waste/plant litter and sometimes also includes animal carcasses. In the open, compost can occur on its own, through natural processes. However, the process takes a long time while the need for fertile soil is urgent. Therefore, the process needs to be accelerated with the help of microorganisms. This community service activity is a form of application of science and technology by inducing leaf debris as compost material with saprotroph fungi inoculum. Saprotroph fungi isolates are very potential to be developed into composting inoculum in making organic fertilizers. Compost induced with this fungal inoculum is expected to produce organic fertilizer relatively quickly and contain high plant nutrients. The results of the Community Service showed quite good results, namely an increase of about 88.4% from the initial understanding. This is quite interesting because the initial understanding of compost and inoculum was relatively low at 25.04%. After the explanation given by the Community Service team, it was able to be understood by the target audience well so that their understanding increased to 63, 6%.

Abstract

One product of composting technology that also growing rapidly is the manufacture of compost tea (CT). CT is an oxygenated compost water extract obtained through aeration in the liquid phase. The process of making CT with this method is called Aerated Compost Tea (ACT). ACT is a compost water extract containing dissolved nutrients and growth hormones. In addition to functioning as a source of nutrients, ACT can also improve the soil ecosystem for the growth of decomposing microbes that can support soil fertility, improve soil physical and biological properties, improve microbial activity, and can also increase plant resistance to pathogens. ACT provides dissolved nutrients that are more quickly absorbed by plants and at the same time provides biopesticides to prevent or inhibit infection by pathogens that cause plant diseases. This Community Service activity is the development of science and technology from the results of research that has been carried out. The results of Community Service show quite good results, namely there is an increase of about 33.35% from the initial understanding. This is quite interesting because the initial understanding of ACT was low, at level of 60.54. The explanation given by the Community Service team, able to be understood by the target audience well so that their understanding increased to 78.02.

Abstract

Used cooking oil is a type of domestic waste that has the potential to cause adverse impacts on both health and the environment if not properly managed. This community service activity aimed to enhance the community’s understanding and capacity to process used cooking oil waste into valuable products. The activity was conducted on January 30, 2026, in Jatibaru 2 Village, Tanjung Bintang District, South Lampung Regency, involving 30 participants involving a group of housewives and young women. The methods used included lectures, hands-on practice, and interactive discussions. The results of the activity indicated an improvement in participants’ understanding, as reflected by an increase in the average score from 6 in the pre-test to 8 in the post-test. In addition, participants demonstrated high enthusiasm and were able to process used cooking oil into economically valuable products. This activity not only increased community awareness of proper waste management but also created opportunities for small-scale business development based on household waste utilization. Therefore, this activity contributes to environmental conservation efforts while simultaneously strengthening sustainable community economic empowerment.
