Abstract

Background: Root canal treatment failure can be caused by periapical lesions and inadequate restorations such as post restorations. It showed that comprehensive evaluation, such as clinical or radiographic evaluation, is needed to observe the healing of endodontically treated dental and intra-radicular post-condition, especially fiber post and fiber reinforced composite (FRC). This research aims to evaluate the clinical and radiographic success of endodontically treated teeth restored with single crown restoration using a non-metal post. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional design and descriptive observation of evaluating endodontically treated teeth. 72 samples were collected from medical records, and radiographs of endodontically treated patients; then, scoring was carried out to categorize the treatment outcome using modified Strindberg criteria. Results: Endodontically treated dental restoration with non-metal post evaluation showed 63,9% teeth categorized as uncertain, followed by 36,1% teeth categorized as success and 0% in the failure category. Conclusion: The result of this study suggests that a longer follow-up period will be needed to achieve a more stable evaluation result.

Abstract

Knowledge of the root canal system plays a significant role in avoiding the failure of root canal treatment. Premolar teeth may have several anatomical variations in their root canal system. A dentist must understand these root canal systems and their variation to conduct the appropriate treatment. The mandibular second premolar usually consists of a single root with a single root canal. The incidence of lower premolars with two or more root canals varied between 1.2% and 34%. This study aims to evaluate the success of root canal re-treatment of mandibular second premolars with type III Vertucci’s Classification. Case report: A 28-year-old woman visited our dental hospital with a pain sensation in her lower left premolar tooth. The subjective examination revealed that she had experienced pulp capping and root canal treatment last year. However, she felt pain and uncomfortable feeling on that treated tooth. A radiograph examination showed a radiopaque area from the crown edge to half of the root. The radiolucent area from the half tooth to the apical region showed root canal branching. The diagnosis for this tooth was previously treated teeth, asymptomatic apical periodontitis with type III of Vertucci’s Classification. Root Canal Treatment was done using crown down preparation technique and obturation with warm vertical condensation followed by class II composite resin composite as a temporary filling. Results showed that after three months of evaluation, the retreated-tooth condition kept showing good condition without any complaints, pain, or clinical abnormalities, suggesting it could function properly.

Abstract

Cavities or caries are diseases of the hard tissue of the teeth. The presence of caries must not be ignored and must be treated because carious lesions can spread and result in pain, tooth loss, and infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. This community service activity aims to increase public awareness of dental and oral health through curative efforts and evaluation of the clinical picture after indirect pulp capping treatment at the State Agricultural Development Vocational School, Ikurkoto Health Center Area, Padang City. The method used in this service begins with patient screening, pulp capping treatment, and evaluation in the form of subjective and objective examinations 1 week after treatment. Participants in the activity were 403 patients who came from around the Ikurkoto Community Health Center area. This activity found that cavities were more common in the back (posterior) teeth, especially the lower molars, as much as 80%, compared to the front (anterior) teeth, as much as 20%. The material used is a bioactive material, namely Glass Ionomer Cement (SIK) type 2 with different brands, namely Fuji II LC (type II aesthetic) 70% and Fuji IX (type II reinforced) 30%. The evaluation results after treatment showed that as many as 71% of dental patients were asymptomatic and responded well to pulp capping treatment.

Abstract

Introduction: Dental health literacy is crucial in managing emergency dental and oral health issues, especially for Indonesian migrant workers in Singapore who have limited access to healthcare services. The Singapore Department of Statistics reported that as of 2023, there were 1.77 million non-residents in Singapore, a 13.1% rise from the year before. This growth was mostly due to foreign employment in domestic and construction-related industries. Language barriers, economic constraints, and differences in healthcare systems contribute to a low understanding of emergency dental actions. This study aims to analyze this group’s emergency dental health literacy level. Methods: This study employed a descriptive cross-sectional quantitative design using a survey method on 124 Indonesian migrant workers in Singapore. Data was collected through a Likert-scale-based questionnaire to measure participants' understanding, attitudes, and self-efficacy in handling emergency dental situations. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive analysis, reliability testing, Spearman’s correlation, and the Kruskal-Wallis comparative test. The study has received ethical approval from the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (FKIK UMY), and participants provided informed consent in order to protect participants' rights. Results: The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability test produced a value of 0.803, indicating good internal consistency. A total of 76.6% of respondents understood emergency dental management steps, while 92% recognized the importance of seeking medical assistance if a toothache persisted for more than two days. However, only 57.3% were aware of safe over-the-counter medications for dental pain relief. Education played a role in improving dental health literacy, but no significant differences were found based on age. Conclusion: The majority of Indonesian migrant workers in Singapore have a relatively good understanding of emergency dental health literacy; however, improvements are needed in the selection of appropriate medications. This study highlights the need for more effective awareness programs and policy support to enhance access to dental health information, enabling migrant workers to handle emergency dental issues appropriately. Concrete interventions such as increasing emergency dental literacy can be done with mobile dental health outreach, multilingual training programs, and connecting with networks in the migrant community.

Abstract

Background: Taste has an important role in human life because of the sense of taste, humans have an ability to taste various flavors of food. Decreased taste sensitivity can affect the quality of life and cause a person to consume excessive taste substances. One of the factors associated with decreased taste sensitivity is smoking. Currently, a new type of cigarette (electric cigarette or e-cigarette) is being developed which is favorable to young people because it has a different content, shape, and taste compared to conventional cigarettes. E-cigarettes are considered safer because aerosol does not contain the tobacco content of conventional cigarettes and is an alternative to smoking cessation programs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the difference in taste sensitivity between conventional smokers and e-smokers. Method: This research is an analytical observational study using a cross-sectional design. The research subjects were conventional and electric smokers who were students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The research subjects were obtained by purposive sampling, a total of 32 people who had met the inclusion criteria. Data analysis used frequency tables for univariate data and an-independent sample T-test for bivariate data. Result: The results of the bivariate analysis showed a significant value between conventional and electric smokers with p = 0.036 (< 0.05) for sweet, salty, and sour tastes, while for bitter tastes p = 0.031 (< 0.05). Conclusion: Taste sensitivity in conventional smokers is less sensitive than in electric smokers. Sensitivity to bitter tastes in both treatment groups is less sensitive than sweet, salty, and sour tastes.

Abstract

Background: Root canal bacteria produce many virulence factors which are responsible for endodontic pathological states. Bacteria are assumed to utilize energy from bacterial cell metabolism activity for producing these virulence factors. Propolis extracts are commonly reported to have antibacterial abilities against dental pathogens. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible correlation between bacterial proteolytic and metabolism activities under the treatment of ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP).Method: The 0.00125%; 0.05%; 0.1%; 0.2%; 0.4%; and 0.8% ethanolic propolis were prepared for recovery rate confirmative procedure, proteolytic, and metabolism activity assay, with 2% of chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) was used as a positive control. The bacteria were cultured in brain heart infusion (BHI) media after EEP treatment. Bacterial suspension was initially prepared in broth culture dilution with BHI media, followed by the gelatin liquefaction measurement for proteolytic assay. Phenol-red and arginine dehydrogenase enriched media for observing both carbohydrate and arginine metabolism activities, respectively, in the clinical Enterococcus spp. and E. faecalis ATCC 29212.Result: The recovery rate of the bacteria was not terminated after several EEP treatments. Proteolytic activity of the bacteria was likely decreased in several EEP treatments. EEP tended to affect the carbohydrate and arginine metabolism of the bacteria in certain fashions. Conclusion: This study suggested that the EEP treatment affected both proteolytic and metabolism activity in negative regulation tendencies.

Abstract

Background: The failure of root canal treatment is non-hermetic obturation. It could be prevented with the use of sealer material. The sealer with an excellent bond to the dentin is epoxy  resin and glass ionomer cement sealer. Eucalyptus oil is a natural substance that could dissolve gutta-percha because it has an antimicrobial effect and is biocompatible. Objective: To determine the effect of softening with Cajuput Oil on root canal filling with epoxy resin and glass ionomer cement sealers. Methods: The design of this study was pure laboratory experimental, 24 samples of single root canal  block, each block was prepared with step back technique and obturation with lateral condensation. The samples were treated differently by the type of sealer used and incubation time. Group of treatment will be dripped with 0.1 ml of cajuput oil for 5 minutes. Compressive loading was performed apico-coronally by Universal testing machine using cylindrical stainless-steel plunger speed of 2 mm/min until softening occurred. The data were processed using a one-way ANOVA and Post-Hoc Tukey test with a significance level of 95% (p <0,05). Results: There was a significant effect of epoxy bisphenol resin sealer and Glass Ionomer Cement sealer in softening gutta-percha using cajuput oil. The epoxy resin sealer, which was incubated for 22 days after contact with cajuput oil for 5 minutes, had a higher softening value than others. Conclusion: Sealer epoxy bisphenol resin is easier  to remove than the Glass Ionomer Cement sealer with cajuput oil solvent at 22 days after incubation.
