Abstract

ABSTRACT This article explores the extent to which Western literature, particularly from Britain and the United States, influenced the development of modern Indonesian literature in the 20th century. The study employs a literature review and intertextual reading approach, involving the examination of theories on modernism and cultural interaction, as well as an analysis of Indonesian literary works that show Western influences, especially those by Chairil Anwar and Sutan Takdir Alisyahbana. The analysis draws on Sarwoto’s framework to map the development of Indonesian literary discourse in the context of modernity, ideology, and cultural identity. The discussion focuses on the adoption of Western literary styles, themes, and narrative structures. Modernism in Indonesian literature is understood as the result of tensions between local traditions and global cultural currents that have developed since the colonial period. Chairil Anwar is known for his expressive and individualistic style, reflecting existentialist influences, while Sutan Takdir Alisyahbana emphasizes rationality and renewal, in line with the spirit of modern humanism. Both figures did not merely adopt Western influences passively but adapted them to the Indonesian socio-cultural context. As a result, a distinctive form of modern Indonesian literature emerged—one that bridges local cultural heritage with universal ideas. This study demonstrates that modern Indonesian literature is the product of dynamic interactions between internal and external forces and contributes to a deeper understanding of literature as a product of global cultural exchange.

Abstract

The main factor causing inequality for women is patriarchy. As in many old-school traditions, patriarchy remains in marriage where wives are urged to bow down to their husbands and the husband is regarded as the ultimate authority of the household. This research investigates the narrative of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's iconic short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper". Descriptive qualitative research and textual analysis approach are used to complete this research analysis. Along with the depiction of radical feminism, this research aims to subvert patriarchal ideals. This is in keeping with the narrator’s husband John, who works as a physician, forbids her to do anything instead locking her in the ancestral halls. The reason of his attitude as if this is the only way to cure the female narrator’s depressing nervous trouble. She is often considered let the silly fancies run in her mind and lost control. In the nursery room she is locked up, she found an irritating painting on the yellow wallpaper. Yet, she later discovered there is a woman imprisoned in the painting who is always creeping. The findings show that the yellow wallpaper symbolizes the female narrator’s suffering as a captivated creature and pushed by the patriarchy control.

Abstract

literary characters often function as reflections of human nature and moral values. This study analyzes the character of Ichabod Crane in Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow as a representation of human greed and foolishness. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research examines Ichabod Crane’s actions, motivations, and psychological traits through characterization theory and moral-psychological approaches. The findings reveal that Ichabod Crane’s intellectual ability is overshadowed by material ambition and irrational fear, leading to his moral and social downfall. This study concludes that Irving employs Ichabod Crane as a moral critique of human weakness, emphasizing that intelligence without moral wisdom results in failure. The research contributes to literary studies by highlighting the relevance of moral criticism in classic American literature.
