Abstract

This study is driven by the low level of ecological awareness and naturalistic intelligence among elementary school students, who often rely solely on classroom-based theoretical learning. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Outdoor Learning method in enhancing naturalistic intelligence and pro-environmental attitudes among third-grade students at SDN 1 Kabanjahe, specifically within the Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) subject. This research employs a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. The study population consists of all third-grade students, with two classes selected as samples through purposive sampling: class III-A as the experimental group utilizing Outdoor Learning and class III-B as the control group using conventional methods. Data were collected through observation scales for naturalistic intelligence and Likert-scale questionnaires for pro-environmental attitudes. The results of the t-test analysis indicate a significant difference in the post-test scores between the two groups. Students in the experimental group showed a substantial increase in their ability to identify biological phenomena and exhibited more consistent environmentally friendly behaviors compared to the control group. In conclusion, the Outdoor Learning method is significantly effective in stimulating naturalistic intelligence and fostering pro-environmental attitudes in third-grade students, suggesting that environmental-based learning should be integrated more deeply into the Independent Curriculum implementation at the primary level.
