Abstract

The production of vegetable-based fuels has intensified in recent years due to the decreasing availability of fossil fuels and their environmental impacts. This study explores the synthesis, characterization, and application of nickel-molybdenum (NiMo) bimetal-dispersed silica catalysts for converting used palm cooking oil into liquid biofuels. The catalysts were synthesized using the wet impregnation method, incorporating Ni and Mo metals at concentrations of 1, 2, and 3% by weight of silica derived from rice husk ash. Impregnation of the silica with Ni and Mo metals increased its acidity, with the NiMo/SiO? 2 catalyst exhibiting the highest acidity value of 4.34 mmol/g. This catalyst also demonstrated the largest specific surface area and total pore volume, measured at 205.51 m²/g and 0.88 cm³/g, respectively. Hydrocracking of used palm cooking oil into liquid biofuels was performed at an optimum temperature of 450 °C with catalyst-to-feed weight ratios of 1:100, 2:100, and 3:100 for 1 h by hydrogen gas supply of 20 mL/min. Catalyst activity tests revealed the highest mass percentage of liquid product, 23.3%, at a ratio of 1:100 (w/w), with a biofuel yield of 20.34%, comprising 14.20% gasoline and 6.14% diesel. By utilizing biomass waste as both a catalyst and feedstock, this study presents a sustainable approach to reducing the carbon footprint and promoting environmental balance.

Abstract

Peatlands in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, are ecologically significant due to their acidic, organic-rich conditions, yet their microbial communities remain underexplored, particularly regarding their enzymatic potential. This study aimed to isolate and characterize amylolytic bacteria from peat soil collected at a depth of 143–150 cm in the LAHG CIMTROP area of Central Kalimantan. A total of 44 bacterial isolates were obtained using serial dilution and the gridding method. Screening for amylase activity identified isolate ENS31 as having the highest activity, shown by a clear halo on starch agar. ENS31 was further subjected to biochemical characterization and enzyme activity assays. The amylase enzyme exhibited optimal activity at pH 7 and 50°C, with a specific activity of 3.5 U/mg, and retained activity up to pH 12 (2 U/mg). These results indicate that ENS31 produces an enzyme stable in alkaline conditions despite originating from an acidic environment, demonstrating potential for industrial applications requiring pH and temperature-tolerant biocatalysts. This study contributes to understanding the functional diversity of peatland microbes and highlights tropical peat ecosystems as promising sources of novel enzymes.

Abstract

The production of biomass-based briquettes from coconut shell charcoal and banana corm adhesive has been successfully carried out. This research aims to determine whether the banana corm may serve as an adhesive for briquette production from coconut shell charcoal. The concentration of banana corm utilized as adhesive is 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%. For comparison analysis, this study also employed tapioca flour adhesive with the same concentration. The briquettes adhere to the SNI 01-6235-2000 standard for briquettes. The quality of briquettes is determined based on fixed carbon content and calorific value. The minimum standard calorific value and fixed carbon content are 5000 cal/g and 65%, respectively. Briquettes with a 90:10 ratio (coconut shell charcoal to banana corm adhesive ratio) had the highest calorific value of 7250 cal/g and fixed carbon content of 80.04%. In comparison, the tapioca flour adhesive provides a calorific value and fixed carbon content of 6995 cal/g and 81.09%, respectively. Furthermore, another indicator that determines briquette quality is the content of moisture, ash, and volatile matter. Briquettes with a 90:10 ratio possessed low moisture content (3.55%), ash content (6.45%), volatile matter content (9.96%), and burning rate (0.020 g/sec). This result indicates that the briquettes with a 90:10 ratio exhibit the greatest quality. Briquettes with banana corms adhesive have similar characteristics to tapioca flour, especially in terms of calorific value. As a result, the highlight of this research lies in offering banana corm, which has scientific contribution and future potential as an alternative adhesive in the briquetting process
