Abstract

Dietary diversity is one of the diet quality. Poor dietary diversity is associated with malnutrition, stunting, poor gut health, pregnancy complications, and cognitive impairment. Overcoming the underlying and basic causes of poor dietary diversity is imperative through policymaking. This current literature review discussed about intervention policies to improve dietary diversity at the individual and population levels. Literature search was carried out in some databases, i.e., Pubmed/Medline, Google Scholar, and Google with key word search such as dietary diversity, improvement, programs, interventions, and policies. The synthesized articles included observational studies, experimental studies, and grey literature on Dietary diversity programs and interventions. Articles on biodiversity and microbial diversity were not included. Dietary diversity can outgrow by knowing the policy on food-based interventions which are closely related to the food system and non-food-based interventions to improve socio-economic aspect and knowledge. Food-based interventions include food production, food prices, agricultural diversification, market development, and food-based dietary guidelines. Meanwhile, non-food-based interventions involve a country's development and economic growth, social behavior change, communication strategy, cash transfer, and mass media campaigns. Interventions to improve dietary diversity must be carried out in multi-sectors, for example, by improving family welfare, knowledge and behavior change, and stable food access.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of chronic energy deficiency, anemia, and compliance with the consumption of iron supplement tablets by pregnant women with low birth weight. This research design was a case-control retrospective approach with a sample size of 33 people. The independent variables in this study were chronic energy deficiency, anemia, and compliance with iron supplement consumption during pregnancy; the dependent variable was Low Birth Weight (LBW). Data collection using observation and interviews, statistical tests using the chi-square test. The results of the research were that there was an effect of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) (p=0.000) OR=94.5, anemia (p=0.019) OR=9.64, compliance with iron supplement consumption on LBW (p=0.009) OR=12.00. An OR value > 1 proves that pregnant women with CED anemia and compliance with iron supplement consumption have a greater risk of giving birth to LBW children than mothers without CED are anemic and adhere to iron supplement consumption. The incidence of CED, anemia, and compliance with iron supplement consumption in pregnant women influence LBW. Prevention efforts need to be carried out through education and assistance from families in meeting the nutritional needs of pregnant women, as well as compliance in consuming iron supplements as recommended

Abstract

An increase in stunting incidents occurred in Samarinda in 2022. Several studies in the Harapan Baru area found children's inadequate food intake, low environmental sanitation, and low maternal knowledge regarding nutrition. The mother's role is vital in child feeding. Providing nutritional education to mothers of stunted children is carried out to create independence in preparing healthy and nutritious food, as well as protecting children from disease. This community service has the Harapan Baru Community Health Center as a partner. Nutrition education and the formation of a WhatsApp Group were conducted, followed by practice sessions in making complementary food using local ingredients. The results were an increase in the average knowledge of mothers, increasing mothers' skills in preparing adequate complementary food, and improvement in consumption intake after the intervention. Providing education accompanied by cooking practices can be a program intervention in the community to improve mothers' skills in making complementary food

Abstract

In Samarinda in the Loa Janan Ilir sub-district, 8.23% (93 cases) of babies were born with low birth weight in 2021, two times from the previous year. The research is needed to understand the risk factors of LBW during pregnancy, such as anemia, chronic energy deficiency (CED) and the appropriateness of weight gain, in order to determine prevention programs. This study used a retrospective cohort method by looking at exposure during pregnancy and the baby's birth weight. The data used in this research is secondary data using a total sampling technique on the population of mothers who gave birth from January to May 2023. Analysis was carried out by looking at causal relationships and relative risk (RR) using the Chi-Square test and multivariate logistic regression. There was no relationship between anemia (p-value= 0.634) dan CED (p-value= 0.794) and appropriate weight gain (p-value= 0.189) during pregnancy and the incidence of LBW. Based on a multivariate test, it was found that pregnant women < 20 years old had a 45.16 times greater risk of having a LBW child (p=0.017). Meanwhile, mothers with inappropriate weight gain have a 7.6 times risk of having LBW children compared to those with (p-value=0.054). This is likely to occur because the majority of pregnant women have applied double doses to anemic pregnant women, but have not yet determined the adequacy of maternal’s diet based on inadiquate weight. Community health center is expected to carry out behavioral change interventions related to diet during pregnancy, apart from the importance of consuming supplements, as well as education regarding the impact of adolescent pregnancy.

Abstract

Abstract

Food insecurity remains a significant public health issue, especially among infants and young children. This study aimed to identify the determinants of food security among 6-23-month-old infants in Mangkupalas, Samarinda, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 137 households with infants aged 6-23 months in Puskesmas Mangkupalas area. The study used consecutive sampling in 3 villages namely tenun, mesjid and mangkupalas. Quantitative data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using spearman rank correlation test.A total of 73.7% of households locatednear markets were food secure compared to 52.5% of those far from markets, and this distance was statistically associated with household food security(p = 0.019, r = -0.201). Household income showed a significant positive association with food security (p = 0.008, r = 0.226), where 76.7% of households earning ≥3,500,000 IDR/month were food secure compared to only 52.2% among those earning ≤1,500,000 IDR/month. Interestingly, home gardening, which theoretically influences food security, was not found to have a significant association(p = 0.884, r = 0.017).The findings indicate that in urban areas, where food access heavily depends on purchasing power and proximity to food sources, household food security is shaped more by economic stability and market access than by subsistence practices like home gardening. Limited land availability and a narrow variety of cultivated crops may constrain the effectiveness of home gardening in contributing to nutritional adequacy.
