Abstract

The errors of L2 learners are much influenced by their L1. they (errors) were the result of interference in the learning of a second language from the habits of the first language.Corrective Feedback (CF) does not always provide the correct form but it also forces learners to utilize their own resources in constructing a reformulation.Direct feedbacks do not figure out the actual performance of students’ comprehension in correcting the errors because teachers have provided the correct one. Teachers have to invite students to be active finding the correct one from their errors they produce

Abstract

This current research aimed at finding out the impact of different feedback modes, that is indirect corrective feedback and direct corrective feedback, on the writing proficiency of EFL students at the university level. Direct and indirect corrective feedbacks were provided by covering global and local aspects of writing together. This study reported on a 14-week study with 63 students majoring in the English Education Department of an outstanding university in Surabaya, Indonesia. The pre-test was given to 35 students that belonged to a high proficiency level group, whereas 28 students belonged to the low proficiency level. The proficiency level was used to examine whether the corrective feedback was effective for certain levels of learners’ proficiency. An experimental design was run to examine whether there was a noteworthy different impact of direct corrective feedback (DCF) and indirect corrective feedback (ICF) on descriptive essays produced by EFL students. Two groups of participants, DCF group and ICF group, wrote eight topics in which each was treated using different feedback. The results revealed that the DCF is more powerful than ICF and contributes significantly to improve students’ EFL writing, regardless of the students’ level of proficiency (high or low). The outcomes of DCF and ICF in the EFL writing process that do not depend on proficiency level indicates that the use of DCF and ICF is not influenced by proficiency level. In other words, direct corrective feedback is advantageous for both low and high proficiency learners in EFL writing process.

Abstract

This paper is aimed at (1) investigating whether the implementation of portfolio assessment had an impact on students’ writing ability, and (2) obtaining the students’ attitudes towards portfolios. The method used in this study was quasi-experimental research design, and the data were collected through a set of writing tests (pre-test and post-test) and a questionnaire. The results show that the implementation of portfolio assessment increased the students’ writing ability. It was also found that the students’ knowledge of global issues (content and organization) also increased more significantly than the local issues (grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics). In addition, the results of the questionnaire proved that the secondary level students had positive attitudes towards the implementation of the portfolio assessment. Therefore, it is suggested that the portfolio assessment should be implemented in the teaching-learning process especially in English writing since it could give regular feedback, and help the students in monitoring their writing progress.

Abstract

In song lyrics, the authors are free to express their imagination to make a representation of life. Each lyric contains its own meaning according to the creativity of the songwriters; many songs were created because of their personal experience with the loved ones. This research examines the meaning of love in the lyrics of Green Day's song Last Night on Earth using the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes. In this semiotic analysis, Roland Barthes exposes meanings of denotation, connotation, and myth regarding the meaning of love contained in the theme of the song. By using qualitative method, denotative meaning of the song is the power of love even though the distance separates the two. The connotative meaning relates to how the writer wrote a message to his wife to keep his love. The myth is correlated in when the songwriter loses everything he has because it was engulfed in flames, but he will stop at nothing to send his love to his wife. In conclusion, Green Day proves that there is still true love in him for the man’s wife despite any distance and bad condition.

Abstract

Margaret Atwood is a female author who is known from her works that discuss intertwinement of women's relationships with the world. Giving Birth is one of her short stories published in 1977 that focused on an unnamed female narrator’s story that tells Jeanie’s experience who are preparing and finally undergoing the process of giving birth. Through this short story, the researchers indicated matter of gynocriticism by Elaine Showalter that describes women as writers. It also included matter of soul and psychoanalytic approach. Through qualitative method, this research underlines how giving birth is specific experience felt only by women from the existence of the womb. Pregnancy is the best experience of woman that could define herself as the main author of the future adventure of her baby. In conclusion, underlining gynocriticism in Giving Birth indicated true matters of identity of women beings. Then, the criticism also shows how those shape differences between male and female kind of literature.

Abstract

Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah memberikan pendampingan serta bimbingan dengan bentuk workshop pengenalan dan penulisan artikel dalam jurnal ilmiah bagi pengurus dan anggota Forum Lingkar Pena (FLP) Sidoarjo. Hal ini didasari oleh cita-cita dan harapan mitra guna meningkatkan dan menumbuhkan aktivitas literasi dalam ruang lingkup penulisan artikel nonfiksi berwujud artikel ilmiah yang diterbitkan di jurnal. Oleh karena itu, mitra bekerja sama dengan Tim Abdimas Fakultas Sastra Unitomo mengadakan workshop berbentuk teori dan praktik yang sebelumnya diawali dengan analisis situasi keadaan kebutuhan mitra melalui dialog dan koordinasi secara intensif selama dua bulan lebih dari pertengahan bulan April hingga Juni 2022. Metode yang digunakan di kegiatan workshop ini adalah metode ABCD (Asset Based Community Development). Materi yang disampaikan ke partisipan meliputi tiga yaitu, jurnal ilmiah dan fungsinya, pembuatan jurnal ilmiah baru beserta pengenalan menu OJS, penulisan artikel ilmiah yang baik. Selanjutnya, praktik menulis draf artikel ilmiah dimulai pendahuluan hingga metode penelitian dilaksanakan partisipan dan dibimbing narasumber. Hasil dan manfaat workshop ini untuk partisipan adalah pengetahuan perihal jurnal ilmiah beserta manfaatnya meningkat, pengetahuan cara membuat jurnal ilmiah baru beserta manajemennya di OJS meningkat, dan partisipan juga dapat melaksanakan praktik menulis draf artikel bersistematika jurnal ilmiah secara sederhana. Rencana tindak lanjut kegiatan ini yakni, mitra Forum Lingkar Pena (FLP) Sidoarjo dapat bekerja sama kembali dengan Tim Abdimas Fakultas Sastra dalam workshop kedua yang difokuskan pada teknik dan pembahasan penulisan artikel ilmiah dalam jurnal penelitian.This community service activity aims to provide assistance and guidance through an introductory workshop and writing an article in a scientific journal for Forum Lingkar Pena (FLP) Sidoarjo members. This is based on the partners’ aspirations and hopes to increase and foster literacy activities within the scope of writing nonfiction articles in the form of scientific articles published in journals. Therefore, FLP Sidoarjo works together with the Unitomo Faculty of Letters Abdimas Team to hold a workshop in the form of theory and practice, which previously began with an analysis of the situation of partner needs through intensive dialogue and coordination for two months from mid-April to June 2022. The method presented in workshop activities is ABCD (Asset Based Community Development) method. The material in the form of the theory given to the participants consisted of 3: scientific journal and their functions, the creation of a new scientific journal and introduction to the OJS menu, and writing a good scientific article. The next activity, namely, the practice of writing scientific article drafts from the introduction until the research method, was carried out by the participants and guided by the presenters. The result and benefits of this workshop for the participants were that their knowledge of scientific journals and their functions increased, their understanding of the creation of new scientific journal and their management in OJS also increased, and the participants were also able to practice writing drafts of articles in a simple scientific journal format. The follow-up plan for this activity is that the Sidoarjo Forum Lingkar Pena (FLP) partners can work together again with the Faculty of Letters Abdimas Team for a second workshop focused on techniques and discussion of writing scientific articles in research journals.

Abstract

This study investigated the use of U-Dictionary and Google Translate in translating English Speech into the Indonesian language. This study aimed to test whether U-Dictionary outperforms Google Translate in translating English Speech into Indonesian. The true experimental design was applied to examine the result of the translation from U-Dictionary and Google Translate. Two raters assessed the translation result from U-Dictionary and Google Translate using a translation scoring rubric (In the "Equal Variances Assumed" section, the two-tailed significance value is 0.000, which is less than 0.05). The result showed that U-Dictionary didn’t outperform Google Translate in translating English Speech into Indonesian. On the contrary, Google Translate outperformed U-Dictionary Google Translate in translating English Speech into the Indonesian language. Here, the source language is English and the target language is Indonesian language. The result strongly suggests that Google Translate app is more effective than U-Dictionary in translating English to Indonesian in relating topics such as biography, daily life, and culture of certain community. The further research is expected to investigate the efficacy of Google Translate towards U-Dictionary in different scope of discourse like economic, politic, law, and etc. Moreover, the future research may compare among Machine Translation (MT) or among translation apps.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of utilizing Listening with Received Pronunciation (LWRP) in improving the English vocabulary of elementary school pupils. A total of sixty-one fourth-grade students actively participated in the study, undergoing both pre-and post-tests to evaluate the impact of the intervention on their vocabulary skills. The results of the study revealed a notable enhancement in the vocabulary proficiency of students who received instruction through LWRP, as evidenced by their post-test scores surpassing those of their peers who did not receive the same intervention. On average, the LWRP group demonstrated higher levels of vocabulary understanding compared to their counterparts. In conclusion, the findings suggest that incorporating Listening with Received Pronunciation into the instruction of elementary school pupils can be an effective and productive approach to fostering proficiency in English vocabulary acquisition at a young age. This research underscores the importance of innovative teaching methods, such as LWRP, in enhancing language learning outcomes for elementary school students.
