Abstract

LGBTIQ has become a controversial topic concerning one’s sexual preference over the past few years in Indonesia. Indonesian sexuality will always intersect with the norms, religious values and the state laws. Therefore, this phenomenon is socially binding as it restricts the identity construction of differing sexual preferences in Indonesia. The issue about sexuality particularly LGBTIQ is addressed in several Indonesian literature, given the significant and notable increase in Indonesian novels with LGBTIQ themes since 2000s. Taking the novels of Ayu Utami’s Saman and Djenar Mahesa Ayu’s Nayla as the objects of investigation, this study examines (1) how Bourdieusian symbolic violence is being questioned in the novels (2) how these novels also challenge the hetero-normativity in Indonesia. The study reveals the symbolic violence towards the lesbian characters in the selected novels through the process of ‘normalisation.’ However, by raising the issues of lesbianism, the novels and their circulation can somehow be seen as a form of resistance towards the Indonesian homophobic society. Keywords: symbolic violence, Indonesian novels, lesbianism, heteronormativity

Abstract

The present study contextualizes critical discourse analysis on Singapore Airlines Premium Economy Class Advertisement to uncover the discrepancies behind their advertisement. Airline Advertisement is intended to attract prospective customers. Singapore Airlines as one of the biggest airline companies in the world is without exception. Singapore Airlines proposes an advertisement which locates their brand as a low-cost airline to attract potential customers in which affordability and comfortability are their selling points. Their advertisement is marketed through glamorous and convincing advertisements as a find a way to attract more passengers. Yet most people do not realize the “hidden” agenda behind those advertisements. Through critical discourse analysis, one can uncover the signs and interrogate the message which lies behind the advertisement. An advertisement is inseparable with their connotation towards certain ideology and meaning behind the “curtain” which manifest through the word choices, images, symbols, and the colors represented there. This paper seeks to unwrap the “not-so-white-lie” represented in Singapore Airlines’ Premium Economy Class Advertisement through critical discourse analysis and Baudrillard’s four stages of signs.

Abstract

The portrayal of male masculinities varies from time to time following the engulfment of gender studies. It is seen from the significant increase of the discussion related to male and masculinities. Furthermore, discussions of masculinity are linked with how a particular culture perceive masculinity. In several Thai folktales and so-considered classic literature like the Legendary Tale of Krai Thong and the Legend of Phra Chao Sua, the heroes and the warriors present themselves as masculine. Their manly assets including body and gesture have become the exploitation of the story whilst being the model of masculinity. Utsana Phleungtham’s two main male characters in the novel the Story of Jan Dara is without exception. Those heroes of the story portray male masculinities through their existence and domination. Undertaking the library studies, this article illustrates how male masculinities are depicted and why it is manifested though those characters. The findings show that the male masculinities are presented vividly in order to maintain the rooted masculine domination.

Abstract

Motherhood is seen as one of the essential aspects in a humans life. Although several values concerning motherhood is cross-cultural, its representation varied from time to time upon locations and cultures. Deriving from this line of thought, this paper compares the differing portrayal of motherhood from Asian and African literature. Undertaking the library studies, this article illustrates the depictions of motherhood and seeks to underline the reasoning why it is manifested through the selected literary works. The novels employed as the objects of study are The Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta and Ibuk by Iwan Setyawan. The finding extrapolates a global conception towards motherhood and how it is presented. It is concluded that the depiction of motherhood in the novels is employed to maintain a social construction that privilege patriarchy. The African motherhood may be different than what they call Asian motherhood. Yet mothers, no matter where they are will always focus on their childrens well-doing.

Abstract

AbstractThis paper charts the emergence of agrarianism as a philosophical thought, situates its development within other ideas such as Romanticism and Transcendentalism, and how agrarian thought intertwined with ecocritical literary analysis. The premise of this study is that within the current state of environmental crisis and degradation, the insight from agrarianism can provide an alternative environmental imagination to reconsider the position of humanity in the wider world. This study applies intellectual history as the framework on how the concepts and theories interacted and influenced other social/cultural/intellectual developments. Agrarianism celebrates rural life and agriculture as a response to industrialization, championed by thinkers like Emerson and Thoreau, who see it as a path to a more meaningful existence. It then examines how agrarianism intersects with ecocriticism, an environmental literary perspective that emerged in the 1960s. Agrarianism contributes significantly to ecocriticism, particularly in its critique of industrialization, exemplified by Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring." Both perspectives emphasize a holistic approach to the environment, emphasizing the interconnectedness of humans and nature. Wendell Berry's ecological agrarianism embodies these principles, stressing sustainable agriculture and environmental care. In conclusion, this paper highlights agrarianism's historical significance and contemporary relevance, illustrating its convergence with ecocriticism in their shared commitment to environmental ethics and preserving the natural world.

Abstract

This research explores the intricate interplay of humour, psycholinguistics, morphology, themes, rheme, and language intelligence within the Indonesian language context. Through thorough analysis, the study breaks down humorous linguistic constructs, emphasizing the significance of abrupt contextual shifts and linguistic disruptions as the essence of Indonesian humour. By examining themes and rheme, the research reveals how humour arises from unexpected linguistic contrasts, challenging reader expectations. From a psycholinguistic perspective, the study dissects the cognitive processes that underlie humour comprehension, shedding light on the crucial role of language intelligence in recognizing and appreciating linguistic nuances. The research methodology involved extensive text analysis, delving into various linguistic elements and their impact on humour. The study concludes that language structure, psycholinguistics, and the manipulation of themes and rheme are fundamental aspects of Indonesian humour, underscoring the linguistic complexity inherent in comedic expression.

Abstract

This study examines the cultural politics affecting Indonesian literature in the global literary arena. It analyses how literary politics, standardisation, implicit agendas, and validation systems impact international reception. The study investigates how global literary standards reshape Indonesian narratives to match international preferences, often at the expense of cultural authenticity. In addition, several works by some prominent Indonesian authors, including Toer, Anwar and Kurniawan are being analysed. Using a descriptive-qualitative approach with discourse analysis, interview and case studies, the research reveals three key findings: translation challenges for Indonesian literary works, limited international publication opportunities, and underrepresentation in global literary awards and criticism. Based on these findings, the study advocates for more inclusive literary practices to enhance Indonesian literature’s global visibility while preserving its cultural integrity.

Abstract

The study investigates the literary activities of third-semester students in the English Education Study Programme at Universitas Musamus Merauke and examines the structural and institutional factors that constrain their engagement with literature. While existing studies on literacy in Indonesian higher education have tended to focus on urban and better-resourced institutional contexts, research addressing the specific conditions of literacy culture in peripheral eastern Indonesian universities, particularly in South Papua, remains scarce. This study addresses that gap by situating the problem within the particular social, geographic, and institutional realities of Universitas Musamus Merauke. Situated in Merauke, South Papua, a region where access to literary resources remains limited and literacy rates among the general population stand at approximately 72%, the study draws on classroom observation, interviews with secondary school teachers, and a systematic library study to collect its data. A fishbone diagram organised around the 5M framework and the USG (Urgency, Seriousness, Growth) method are employed to identify and rank the causal factors behind students' low literary engagement. The findings indicate that a low overall literacy level constitutes the most pressing concern, compounded by the scarcity of organised literary activities on campus, insufficient book procurement, and limited student awareness of available reading resources. The study proposes a set of contextually grounded responses and discusses their potential contribution to character formation and the development of critically engaged graduates in a culturally diverse educational context.
