Abstract

Social media platforms like YouTube have gained popularity as a means of disseminating linguistic content. When foreigners, like "Bule Barbie," attempt to speak Indonesian, some missed-pronounce often occurs. the objectives of this study are to: (1) characterize the mispronounced language sounds in the Bule Barbie YouTube video; and (2) pinpoint the contributing elements to these mispronounced language sounds. Speech with linguistic mistakes made up the research's data. The primary data for this study were from the speech in Bule Barbie YouTube channel on August 14, 2023, entitled "Speaking Indonesian 24 Hours? "Bule Barbie So Confused," while the secondary data were from a variety of sources, including books, journals and other sources that offer data pertinent to the ongoing investigation. There are several kinds of linguistic mistakes, including additions, deletions, and alterations. Various variables, including the effect of one's native language, lack of Bahasa Indonesia mastery, and a lack of formal education, contribute to these inaccuracies. Reducing language errors can be achieved by understanding the sentence structure of Bahasa Indonesia, expanding vocabulary, communicating with native speakers, using learning resources, getting feedback, enrolling in a language class, and practicing regularly.

Abstract

As a literary form, short stories contain a plethora of semantic components that are essential to communicating ideas to readers. It's crucial to comprehend the semantic components of short stories if you want to fully appreciate and analyze literary masterpieces. Because of this, the two main objectives of this study are to (1) examine the use of meaning kinds and (2) analyze the use of meaning relations in short stories. A descriptive approach is used in the research method, which is qualitative research. The primary data came from short tale texts, while the secondary data came from books, earlier research, journals, and other pertinent sources. The study's findings demonstrate how referential and non-referential semantic elements are used in the short story. Additionally, it was discovered that synonyms, antonyms, hypernyms, and hyponyms were used. Understanding the semantic components of this short story helps one better appreciate the point the author is trying to make. This study can advance literary studies and deepen our grasp of the semantic components of contemporary short stories.

Abstract

This study intends to (1) identify the features of language in a middle-aged mother named Pini's suicide will in Talang Village, Sendang District, Tulung Agung on October 23, 2022, and (2) identify the motive for suicide in this case. This study is a qualitative descriptive study that analyzes language aspects using Osslon's (2008) forensic linguistics theory. The investigation yielded (1) the language elements in Pani's suicide will, written by a 41-year-old woman in Tulungagung, were a text structure with certain characteristics that are common in suicide notes, as stated by prokofyeva (2013), there were many spelling, punctuation, and letter errors capital, the use of the pronoun 'aku', and grammar which used a lot of declarative sentences (commands), and some of the emotions implied by the words in the will show emotions of doubt, despair, and the actors' desperation stems from a lack of self-control in the face of unforeseen occurrences. In this scenario, it's conceivable that she was stressed out because her ex-husband remarried. (2) While the perpetrator's suicide was considered to be motivated by mental problems such as depression. This could be seen in various word choices that demonstrated the players' desperation as a result of their inability to control themselves in unforeseen situations. In this scenario, it's conceivable that she was stressed out because her ex-husband remarried. Furthermore, the offender feels alone and without family support; this is classified as egoistic suicide due to a lack of social engagement with people closest to them.

Abstract

As human always involve in social interaction; they are required to use language appropriately to avoid missed-understanding. They need to obey to what-so- called as ‘cooperative pinciples’ (Grice, 1975) and ‘politeness’ (Leech, 1993). However, it is unavoidable that failure of communication often occur especially in a community with different backgrounds (e.g. culture, economy, education, etc.). This study aims (1) to figure out the types of violation of Grice’s cooperative principle, and (2) to figure out the degree of politeness principle in daily conversation among lecturers in Musamus University majoring Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia. The data of the present qualitative study were conversations among lecturers of PBSI of Musamus Univeristy which transcripted and analizyed descriptively based on the four maxims of cooperative priciple by Grice (1975)—maxim of quantity, quality, relevance, and manner and the degree of politeness by Brown and Levinson. The findings revealed that maxim violation was dominated by maxim of relevance (58) while other maxims were maxim of quantity (31), maxim of quality (23), and maxim of manner (20). Some factors triggering speech participants to violate the maxims were to create humor, to avoid being involved in further conversation, to show anger, to ask for confirmation, and to ask someone to do something. In addition, different cultural background also contributes to it. Meanwhile, speech participants tend to use positive politeness to show respect and honor since the conversation occurred at work field.

Abstract

This study analyzes Megawati’s Amicus Curiae letter using discourse analysis, focusing on the construction of in-groups and out-groups, representation of social actors, and discursive strategies. The data analysis method involves Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), focusing on how Megawati’s letter constructs in-group and out-group identities, represents social actors positively or negatively, and employs discursive strategies to legitimize in-group actions while criticizing the out-group. This approach utilizes frameworks from Van Dijk, Van Leeuwen, and Wodak to explore linguistic devices that shape audience perceptions. The findings revealed that the letter constructs the in-group as morally superior and aligned with justice, while the out-group is implied to be responsible for undermining democracy. Discursive strategies, such as moral appeals, historical references, and passive voice, are employed to legitimize in-group actions and subtly criticize the out-group. Additionally, Megawati's motives are highlighted as an effort to assert her political identity, position herself as a defender of democratic values, and enhance her influence in a competitive political landscape.

Abstract

Teachers' understanding in making project-based teaching modules is still less than optimal in the implementation of the independent learning curriculum. This service aims to improve the ability of teachers at SD N Wasur 2 to create project-based teaching modules in the implementation of the Merdeka curriculum. This activity was carried out through training and mentoring, involving 20 teachers as participants in the training activities. The evaluation was carried out using Pretest to measure the teacher's initial ability and Posttest to measure the teacher's final ability in training activities. From the training activities, questions were given in the form of multiple-choice questions as many as 30 questions. Data analysis was carried out using Gain score to find out the difference between the initial and final abilities of the trainees. The results of the activity showed that the increase was 0,55 in the medium category. Training activities have a positive influence on improving teachers' ability to create project-based teaching modules in the implementation of the Merdeka curriculum. The teachers hope to get similar activities carried out to support the continuous improvement of teachers' knowledge and professionalism.

Abstract

Salah satu program revitalisasi SMK yakni pemberian stimulus ujian Bahasa Inggris bersertifikasi (TOEIC) yang sangat membantu siswa SMK untuk mencari kerja tidak merata. Salah satunya di SMK N 2 Pariwisata Merauke, oleh karena itu diperlukan sosialisasi dan pelatihan TOEIC di SMK tersebut melalui kegiatan PkM ini. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk (1)  memperkenalkan TOEIC sekaligus ajang berlatih untuk mempersiapkan diri menghadapi soal TOEIC, dan (2) meningkatkan skor TOEIC siswa di SMK N 02 Pariwisata Merauke. PkM ini dilakukan dengan cara sosialisasi dan pelatihan yang diikuti oleh 40 peserta dari semua jurusan. Untuk mengetahui gambaran kemampuan Bahasa Inggris dan motivasi siswa maka pre-test dan post-test TOEIC serta kuesioner dibagikan. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukan (1) respon positif dari siswa mengenai PkM ini,; mereka lebih mengenal TOEIC dan (2) skor TOEIC Bahasa Inggris siswa meningkat meskipun tidak signifikan

Abstract

Abstrak Keterampilan menulis karya ilmiah mahasiswa Universitas Musamus dinilai masih rendah. Terlihat sekilas dari hasil skripsi mahasiswa yang masih terdapat banyak kesalahan di struktur isi, paragraf maupun kalimat, banyak kalimat tidak koheren dan kohesif, serta banyaknya kesalahan ejaan. Oleh karena itu diperlukan pelatihan-pelatihan yang meyasar pada penulisan karya ilmiah. Namun sebelum karya ilmiah, mahasiswa harus dibekali pengetahuan dasar tentang pembuatan esai yang merupakan cikal bakal karya ilmiah. Kegiatan PkM ini berbentuk pelatihan penulisan esai yang menyasar mahasiwa Universitas Musamus. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di gedung perkuliahan PBSI di F.1.10. Tujuan Pkm ini adalah memberi pengetahuan serta meningkatkan keterampilan menulis esai mahasiswa. Hasilnya adalah setelah pelatihan ini mahasiswa mengaku senang dan termotivasi dalam menulis esai. Kata Kunci: Pelatihan, Penulisan Esai, Mahasiswa Universitas Musamus Abstract The academic writing skills of Musamus University students are perceived to be low. This is evident from the outcome of students' theses which still contain numerous errors in content structure, paragraphs, and sentences. Many sentences lack coherence and cohesion, and there are also numerous spelling errors. Therefore, training targeting academic writing is needed. However, before engaging in academic writing, students need to be equipped with basic knowledge of essay writing, which serves as the foundation for academic work. This Community Service Program (PkM) takes the form of essay writing training aimed at Musamus University students. The activity is conducted at the PBSI lecture building in F.1.10. The goal of this PkM is to provide knowledge and improve students' essay writing skills. Abstract

Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi guru bahasa Inggris di Kabupaten Merauke, Papua Selatan, melalui pelatihan Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Kegiatan ini dilakukan sebagai respons terhadap kebutuhan peningkatan kualitas pengajaran bahasa Inggris di daerah tersebut. Pelatihan diikuti oleh guru dari berbagai sekolah yang ada di Kabupaten Merauke berpartisipasi secara aktif. Program ini mencakup sesi teori dan praktik yang dirancang untuk memperdalam pemahaman peserta tentang struktur dan strategi menghadapi TOEFL, serta meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka secara keseluruhan. Metode evaluasi yang digunakan meliputi pre-test dan post-test TOEFL, serta kuesioner kepuasan peserta. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam skor TOEFL para guru setelah pelatiha. Selain itu, peserta juga melaporkan peningkatan kepercayaan diri dalam kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka dan mengapresiasi materi pelatihan yang relevan dan aplikatif. Kata Kunci: Pelatihan TOEFL, Kompetensi Guru Bahasa Inggris, Kabupaten Merauke Abstract The present community service aims to improve the competence of English teachers in Merauke Regency, South Papua, through Test of English as a Foreign Language training (TOEFL). This activity was conducted in response to the need to improve the quality of English teaching in the region. The training was actively participated in by teachers from various schools in Merauke Regency. This program includes theory and practice sessions designed to deepen participants' understanding of the structure and strategies for facing the TOEFL, as well as to improve their overall English language skills. The evaluation methods used include TOEFL pre-tests and post-tests, as well as participant satisfaction questionnaires. The evaluation results show a significant increase in the teachers' TOEFL scores after the training. Additionally, participants also reported an increase in confidence in their English language skills and appreciated the relevant and applicable training materials Keywords: TOEFL training, English teacher competence, Merauke Regency

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keefektivan peer assessment dalam pengajaran essai deskriptif pada dua level kemampuan siswa (yakni siswa berkemampuan tinggi dan rendah). Sebanyak 48 siswa dari progdi Bahasa Inggris yang menjadi sampel penelitian, dibagi menjadi dua kelas yakni kelas control (n=24) dan kelas eksperimen (n=24). Dari hasil yang didapat,, tidak terdapat perbedaan signifikan dari kelas kontrol dan eksperimen. Oleh sebab itu, H0 yang menyatakan bahwa peer assessment tidak berdampak signifikan terhadap kemampuan menulis siswa diterima.
