Abstract

This study aims to examine the dynamics of Islamic religious education in Indonesia from the classical to the modern era. The purpose is to understand how Islamic education has evolved in line with social, political, and cultural developments across different historical periods. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on literature analysis from academic sources related to Islamic education. The findings show that in the classical era, Islamic education was centered in mosques and traditional boarding schools, emphasizing memorization and religious sciences. In the transitional and modern periods, there were significant developments in curriculum, institutional structure, and teaching methods. Islamic education began to integrate general sciences and respond to modern educational challenges while still maintaining its core religious identity. In the modern era, pesantren and madrasah adopted formal systems, curriculum reform, and technological tools to improve learning quality. This transformation reflects the adaptability of Islamic education to changing times without losing its foundational values. The study concludes that Islamic education in Indonesia continues to be a relevant and evolving system that balances tradition and modernity.

Abstract

This literature study examines the management of character education implemented by Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jailani from the perspective of Islamic education management, as well as its relevance to the implementation of the Independent Curriculum based on deep learning. This study uses a qualitative approach through an in-depth literature study of the main works of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jailani and literature discussing Islamic education, Sufism, and education management. The results of the study indicate that character education developed by Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jailani is structured in four components of education management: planning based on tauhid and tazkiyatun nafs; organizing learning communities through science and dhikr assemblies; implementing learning that includes cognitive, affective, and psychomotor dimensions; and supervision carried out spiritually through muhasabah and spiritual guidance. This concept is in line with the principle of deep learning in the Independent Curriculum which emphasizes character development, reflective interpretation of material, habituation of noble values, and student learning independence. The implications of this study show the importance of integration between Sufi values in Islamic education management with an in-depth learning approach in the Independent Curriculum, so that the formation of students' characters becomes more complete, has high reasoning power, and has noble morals according to the demands of the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the student essay assessment system in Islamic Religious Education, focusing on the use of conventional methods and web-based application support. A qualitative approach with a comparative study design was employed. Data were collected through interviews with Islamic Education teachers of Grade XI at SMKN Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta, which utilizes the Broexam Unlock examination application. Teachers play a crucial role in enhancing assessment competencies, including preparing test materials, developing scoring rubrics, and conducting manual evaluations. The results indicate that the conventional essay assessment method presents weaknesses, such as requiring considerable time and effort due to manual corrections. Conversely, the use of web-based applications such as Exambro offers greater efficiency in time and workload, as the system automatically generates results after the exam. These findings highlight that technology utilization through web-based applications can serve as a strategic innovation to enhance the effectiveness of Islamic Religious Education assessment systems in the digital era.

Abstract

Background. The study is motivated by the increasing attention to character education as a response to moral crises, social transformation, and challenges of Islamic education in the digital era. Purpose. This study aims to analyze the development of scientific publications on character education in Islamic boarding schools during the 2016–2025 period through a bibliometric approach. Method. The research employed a bibliometric method using data obtained from the Scopus database. Data collection was conducted using keywords related to character education, moral education, pesantren, Islamic boarding school, and Islamic education. After the screening process based on publication year, document type, and language, 111 documents were selected and analyzed using VOSviewer software. Results. The findings reveal that publications on character education in pesantren increased significantly after 2020 and reached their peak during 2024–2025. Research themes evolved from normative approaches toward more multidisciplinary issues such as religious moderation, anti-bullying, digital transformation, and entrepreneurship. Indonesia emerged as the dominant contributor to publications in this field, accounting for approximately 90% of the analyzed documents. Conclusion. This study contributes by providing a scientific mapping of research trends, collaboration networks, and future research opportunities related to character education in Islamic boarding schools based on a predominantly Indonesian research landscape indexed in Scopus. The findings confirm that pesantren-based character education holds a strategic role in the development of contemporary Islamic education while highlighting opportunities for broader international collaboration and comparative research.
