Abstract

Error analysis is an activity to identify, classify and interpreted or describe the errors made by someone in speaking or in writing and it is carried out to obtain information on common difficulties faced by someone in speaking or in writing English sentences. For students, error analysis is needed to show them in what aspect in grammar which is difficult for them, to show the errors made by the students, to know the source or the cause of the error and how the students can learn from their mistakes in order that they will not make some errors repeatedly. The purpose of this research is to describe the type of grammatical error faced by students in writing. This research used descriptive qualitative method. This research was carried out in using descriptive writing text to find out what types of error made by students of the tenth grade students MAN 1 Palu in writing and what causes of the students error in writing. The result of the research showed that the tenth grade students MAN 1 Palu still made 41 errors in their writing. They are three classification of error based on surface strategy taxonomy. The high frequency of error is selection (63,41%), omission (26,82), and The lowest frequency of error is addition (9,75). On the other hand, the highest cause of error is carelessness (75,6%), %), first language (7 or 17,07 %), while the lowest cause of error is translation (7.31%).

Abstract

Recently, the use of mobile devices to communicate, learn, attain knowledge, and share information. Whatsapp as one of free downloaded device applications become the most popular platform, especially among university students. It is also regarded as one of teaching and learning media that could facilitate collaborative learning even though in this online classes due to Covid-19 pandemic. Challenges in attracting students’ attention and interest become higher during online learning, since lecturer could not directly interact and teach students. Students are required to fast adapt this new way. This research investigates students’ response on using Whatsapp as a learning tool during the online English Classes at State Islamic Institute of Palu. To get the result, there were 62 students of English Study Program at Tarbiyah and Teaching Education Faculty given 17 items of questionnaire. The result shows the majority of the students have positive responses and enjoy using Whatsapp as a learning tool during online classes. Even they love using Whatsapp.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the process of improving speaking skill through role play for tenth grade students of MANida'ul Khairaat Pombewe in the academic year 2020/2021. This study used pre-experimental design research methods. The researcher chose class 10thas a sample consisting of 10 students. In collecting the data, researchers used four types of instruments, namely: pre-test, treatment, post-test and documentation. The result of the data calculation showed that mean score of the students’ pre-test was 40.9, it was lower than the mean score of post-test 52.6. In analyzing the data the researchers used the 0.05 and 0.01 degree of significance and df (degree of freedom) N-1. This study has two hypothesis which are the null hypothesis or Ho (there is no improvement of using role play to the students’ speaking skill, and the alternative hypothesis or Ha (there is improvement of using role play to the students’ speaking skill). It can be concluded that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. The use of role play was effective to improve the students speaking skill at the tenth grade of students in MA Nida’ul Khairaat Pombewe.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of anxiety toward students’ learning motivation of the eleventh grade at SMAN 4 Palu in the academic year 2019- 2020. This research used as a survey quantitative research method. The population of this research was conducted for the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 4 Palu with consisted of 50 students, who used purposive sampling with took 2 classes as the samples to encourage representative data. In the procedure of collecting data, the researcher used one of instrument is questionnaire. The questionnaire used to encourage the effect of anxiety and the motivation in learning English of the students. The researcher was giving students a questionnaire using WhatsApp. The questionnaire in Google form, so students just open and checklist their answer and send. The result of the questionnaire has shown there was no significant effect of anxiety toward students’ learning motivation. This result of Pearson Product Moment table, which has shown were scores of Sigs between effect Anxiety and Motivation was 0,450 or more than 0,05. It means there was no effect of anxiety toward motivation. The researcher concluding the effect of anxiety toward students' learning motivation was normal.

Abstract

The global pandemic that set by the World Health Organization on January 30, 2020 as a result of the new disease of Covid-19 has made many major changes, one of them in education where learning system are done through online. Online learning policies during the Covid-19 pandemic are the main solution to keeping the learning process going.This thesis aims to find out what impact of English online learning has on students' mental health during the covid-19 pandemic at SMA Negeri 2 Sojol and To find out what factors hindered students in the process of English online learning at SMA Negeri 2 Sojol. In this research, the researcher applied a descriptive qualitative research which were located at SMA Negeri 2 Sojol. Data sources obtained through primary and secondary data. Data collection techniques used are questionnaire and interviews. Based on the results of the questioner showed that they tend to just felt bored, difficult to concentrate, feelings of fear or worry if they are unable to collect tasks on time as well as their difficulty in understanding the material when English online learning during the covid-19 pandemic. Where it is caused by several factors such as poor internet network, residential environment and also monotonous teaching techniques from English teachers.
