Abstract

This study examines how religious authority shapes gender discourse in contemporary Muslim society through a comparative analysis of Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi and Nazaruddin Umar's thoughts on women's political participation. Using a sociology of knowledge framework integrated with Bourdieu's field theory and Giddens' structuration theory, this study answers three questions: how is epistemic authority built in different field positions, how do socio-religious structures shape intellectual production, and do different approaches contribute to the transformation of gender discourse? The analysis reveals three main findings. First, both scholars successfully established credible positions that enabled women's eligibility to run for president through contrasting strategies: Al-Qaradhawi accumulated orthodox reformist capital in the field of transnational scholars, enabling broad acceptance while setting conditions (Islamic dress, family priorities, husband's permission); Umar developed a comprehensive gender hermeneutics at the boundaries of academia and government, enabling unconditional participation based solely on competence. Second, field positions tangibly shape interpretive possibilities; Al-Qaradhawi's ulama habitus produces incremental modifications, while Umar's academic-modern habitus enables radical hermeneutic interventions, yet both demonstrate reflective agency in negotiating patriarchal structures. Third, both approaches contribute complementarily but incompletely to transformation: Al-Qaradhawi achieves broader acceptance through moderate reformism; Umar offers a stronger theological foundation through the principle of equality. Both maintain skepticism toward classical caliphate, indicating uneven transformation across institutional domains. The integration of Bourdieusian and Giddensian frameworks explains how discourse operates simultaneously as a mechanism of structural reproduction and a site of transformative possibility. This study concludes that religious knowledge functions as a socially embedded practice, facilitating partial rather than total transformation of patriarchal structures.

Abstract

This article describes a case of social interaction between ethnic Mandailing and Javanese in Pasar Singkuang II Village, Muara Batang Gadis District, Mandailing Natal District, North Sumatra. This study focuses on forms of inter-ethnic interaction, the problems they experience, and efforts to overcome them. This is a qualitative-descriptive study where data is collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data is processed using descriptive analysis procedures from Miles-Huberman, borrowing social interaction theory as an analytical framework. This study found that in the case of the Mandailing-Javanese ethnic group, inter-ethnic social interactions were associative through social cooperation and acculturation. On the other hand, their interaction is also dissociative because there are inhibiting factors such as communication problems and differences in the ethical values and norms of each ethnic group. These obstacles are overcome by being open to others, adapting, and avoiding negative prejudice. In addition, this study found that in inter-ethnic interactions, religion exerts a strong influence both as a communal identity and through social-religious activities, so that their differences can be merged and strengthen social integration.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the religious practices of fishing communities along the Asahan River in Tanjung Balai Selatan District, as well as the social and cultural challenges they face in maintaining harmony among diverse community groups. The research employed a qualitative phenomenological approach to understand the religious practices of the fishermen, with the location selected purposively due to the community’s strong religious traditions and the close relationship between religion, social values, and local customs. The study was conducted over three months, from May to July 2025, with informants including religious leaders, traditional leaders, fishermen, housewives, and youth, selected through purposive sampling until data saturation was achieved. Data were analyzed interactively through condensation, display, and conclusion drawing, and verified using triangulation of techniques and sources to ensure validity and consistency. The findings show that the fishing community along the Asahan River consistently maintains religious practices and local traditions, even though fishing activities occupy much of their time. Pre-departure prayers before going to sea and participation in socio-religious activities strengthen social solidarity and community cohesion. Differences in religion, customs, and daily habits require tolerance education and effective communication, as well as the role of community leaders and religious figures as mediators. The involvement of younger generations is key to sustaining traditions and communal values. Religious practices among fishermen are simple yet consistent, adapted to daily life: Muslim fishermen strive to observe the five daily prayers in congregation, pay zakat, fast, and celebrate Eid either at home or on boats, while Christian and Buddhist fishermen perform rituals according to their own beliefs. Pre-sea prayers serve as an important tradition for safety and livelihood. The community also participates in collective activities such as Quran recitations, Yasin, tahlilan, and sea charity. Interfaith social life remains harmonious due to mutual respect, cooperation, and teamwork at sea. Challenges arise from differences in religious practices, customs, daily habits, and youth’s lack of interest in traditional practices. Competition over fishing results and certain rituals, such as offering sesajen, may also cause social friction. Efforts to maintain harmony are carried out through deliberation, the role of community leaders, and collective awareness of the importance of mutual respect. In conclusion, the religious life of fishermen is not only individual but also reinforces social bonds and solidarity among community members despite cultural and generational challenges.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah (ABS-SBK) philosophy in shaping religious social capital and kinship networks among Minangkabau traders in the multi-ethnic and multi-religious city of Medan. The background of this research is rooted in the ability of Minangkabau traders to maintain their traditional and religious identities within modern economic activities. This study aims to analyze how the ABS-SBK philosophy influences business ethics and the patterns of kinship networks in Minangkabau trading practices in Medan. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, utilizing observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation techniques. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, supported by source triangulation. The findings indicate that ABS-SBK functions as a moral guideline and a form of religious social capital that fosters trust, solidarity, and perceived business blessings. Kinship networks are formed through blood relations, shared regional origins, and customary-religious commitments, which are practiced through principles of mutual assistance, cooperation, and trust. In conclusion, the ABS-SBK philosophy serves not only as a cultural and religious identity but also as a relevant economic strategy and a model of local wisdom-based business ethics in the modern era.
