Abstract

Natural lighting is one of the important factors in improving visual comfort and energy efficiency in residential buildings (Nur et al., 2023). However, in practice, many houses do not meet the recommended lighting standards. This study aims to evaluate the performance of natural lighting in a two-story residential house located in Sukamahi District, Central Cikarang, and to assess its compliance with the SNI 6197:2011 standard (Damayanti & Setiawan, n.d.).The method used in this study is a quantitative approach through direct measurement using a lux meter at several observation points arranged in a grid pattern in each room, with measurement times between 08:00 and 15:00. The collected data were analyzed by comparing illumination values with the applicable minimum lighting standards. The results show that most rooms in the building do not meet the natural lighting standards. The family room on the second floor has the best lighting level, with an illumination range of 142–305 lux, while the living room ranges from 60–236 lux, with only some areas meeting the standard. The second-floor bedroom has moderate lighting with a range of 58–165 lux, whereas the first-floor bedroom and bathroom show low illumination values, ranging from 22–85 lux and 18–39 lux, respectively. These findings indicate that the distribution of natural lighting is strongly influenced by room configuration, the position and dimensions of openings, and the presence of structural obstructions within the building. Therefore, optimization of opening design and spatial layout is necessary to improve natural lighting quality, visual comfort, and energy efficiency in two-story residential houses (Reza et al., n.d.).

Abstract

Vocational education buildings require more complex utility systems compared to general education buildings because learning activities focus on practical work using machines and equipment. In the Heavy Equipment Engineering Building at SMK Negeri 1 Singosari, lighting and ventilation systems play an important role in supporting safety, comfort, and effectiveness during practical activities. The problem addressed in this study is the condition of the utility systems, particularly lighting and ventilation, and the constraints found in the building. This study aims to analyze and identify the utility systems in the Heavy Equipment Engineering Building of SMK Negeri 1 Singosari, identify existing problems and constraints, and provide a basis for facility development. The research method used was a descriptive method with a field observation approach. Data were collected through direct observation and documentation of lighting and ventilation systems on the first and second floors of the building. The results showed that the lighting system on both floors utilized a combination of natural and artificial lighting; however, several areas on the first floor still had uneven light intensity, especially during cloudy or rainy conditions. The ventilation system on the first floor used natural ventilation and exhaust fans, while the second floor used mechanical ventilation in the form of air conditioners and fans, which were effective in maintaining thermal comfort. Overall, the utility system in the building has supported practical learning activities, but further maintenance and development are still required to improve comfort and energy efficiency

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the integration of climatic conditions, occupant behavior patterns, and their implications for the design of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems in residential buildings in the coastal subtropical region of Momochihama, Fukuoka. Using a descriptive qualitative literature review method, the research explores extreme environmental challenges such as high humidity and salt aerosol exposure. The findings indicate that the fluctuating subtropical climate necessitates the use of adaptive technologies such as Air-Source Heat Pumps and Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) for energy efficiency and humidity control. Furthermore, Japanese hygiene culture increases water and energy demands on plumbing and electrical systems. Design implications include the use of non-corrosive materials (PVC/HDPE) and stainless steel (SUS 316) to ensure material durability. System resilience is enhanced through the implementation of microgrids with battery energy storage and rainwater harvesting as strategies against extreme weather disasters. In conclusion, effective MEP design in subtropical coastal areas must synergize material resistance, understanding of local cultural behavior, and smart technology to achieve sustainable energy efficiency and thermal comfort.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the performance of natural lighting in residential houses located in Abiansemal District, Bali, by considering the influence of building orientation, opening configuration, and light distribution within the room. Natural lighting is an important aspect in improving visual comfort as well as energy efficiency in residential buildings. The research method used is a quantitative approach with descriptive techniques through direct measurements using a lux meter at three observation times, namely 08.00, 12.00, and 15.00 WITA. The data obtained were processed by calculating the average illuminance value in each room, then compared with the natural lighting standard based on SNI 6197:2020. The results showed a significant variation in lighting levels between rooms, where the living room and kitchen had an average illuminance value of 168.1 lux and 136.7 lux, respectively, thus meeting the established standards, while the front bedroom and back bedroom showed an average value of 97.2 lux and 50.0 lux, respectively, which were still below the standard. This difference is influenced by the position of the room relative to the natural light source and the type of lighting access, both direct and indirect. These findings confirm that rooms with direct openings to the outside environment have more optimal lighting performance than rooms that rely on internal openings. Therefore, designing effective openings and adjusting building orientation are crucial factors in improving the quality of natural lighting in residential homes.

Abstract

This study explores the compliance of modern tropical house design in Malaysia with the Uniform Building By-Laws (UBBL) 1984, highlighting challenges arising from differences in construction regulations between Indonesia and Malaysia, despite both countries having similar tropical climates. The research focuses on a comparative evaluation of a prototype design, including building massing, natural lighting, and natural ventilation. The evaluation shows that the design meets structural requirements, with well-organized massing that does not exceed building setback limits. Although the lighting ratio in the master bedroom is slightly below the standard, this adjustment is intended to reduce heat gain in a tropical climate context. The ceiling height of 2.75 meters meets the minimum standard and supports thermal comfort. In conclusion, the modern tropical house design demonstrates architectural and legal feasibility for implementation in Malaysia, emphasizing the importance of harmonizing aesthetics with local regulatory compliance.

Abstract

The physical learning environment, particularly lighting and noise levels, plays an important role in supporting students' comfort and concentration during the learning process. Inadequate lighting can cause eye fatigue and reduce learning focus, while high noise levels can interfere with communication and concentration during classroom activities. This study aims to measure lighting intensity and noise levels in classrooms and the library at SMP Negeri 25 Malang, and to analyze their compliance with learning environment comfort standards. The method used in this study was direct measurement using an environment tester. Lighting measurements were conducted at several points in classrooms and the library at different times, while noise measurements were carried out at certain time intervals to obtain average values. The results showed that the average lighting intensity in classrooms was approximately ±90 lux and in the library ±68 lux, where both values were still below the recommended lighting standards of 250–300 lux for classrooms and 300 lux for libraries. Meanwhile, the average noise level in classrooms was approximately ±75 dB, which exceeded the recommended learning comfort limit of about 55 dB, while the noise level in the library was ±52 dB and still within acceptable limits. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the lighting conditions in classrooms and the library have not met the recommended comfort standards, and the noise level in classrooms is still relatively high, indicating the need for improvements to enhance the comfort of the learning environment.
