Abstract

Developing speaking proficiency is a critical goal for students in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) programs, as effective oral communication skills are essential for their future professional success. This literature review aims to synthesize existing research on assessing and enhancing speaking proficiency among ESP students through various pedagogical approaches. The review explores three main themes: 1) the multifaceted nature of speaking proficiency for ESP students, encompassing linguistic competencies, pragmatic awareness, and intercultural communicative competence; 2) assessment methods for evaluating ESP students' speaking abilities, including standardized tests, performance-based assessments, and contextualized rubrics; and 3) pedagogical approaches for improving speaking skills, such as task-based language teaching, project-based learning, technology integration, and explicit instruction on pragmatics and discourse strategies. The literature review highlights the importance of aligning assessment practices and instructional methods with the specific communicative needs and target language use situations of ESP learners in their respective professional domains. By critically analyzing and synthesizing the findings from relevant studies, this review contributes to a deeper understanding of best practices for assessing and developing speaking proficiency in ESP contexts. Implications for curriculum design, teacher training, and future research directions are discussed, with the ultimate goal of better preparing ESP students to become effective and confident communicators in their chosen fields.

Abstract

Manager's language style plays a crucial role in influencing employee motivation and performance within an organization. This study aims to explore the relationship between manager's language style, motivation, and employee performance using a qualitative descriptive approach. By relying on existing literature and personal observations in the context of management, this study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of how manager's language style can impact employee perceptions of their motivation and performance. Through thematic analysis of relevant literature, several key themes have been identified, including the importance of clear and positive communication, the impact of motivating language on employee engagement, and the role of constructive feedback in enhancing performance. The findings from this study highlight the need for managers to strategically use language that fosters a positive and motivating work environment, which can ultimately lead to increased employee motivation and performance. Practical implications of this research include recommendations for managers to adopt more effective language styles and for organizations to provide appropriate communication training for their leaders. Although this study has limitations due to its reliance on secondary data sources, the resulting findings provide a strong foundation for further research on the role of language style in management.

Abstract

The aftermath of Covid-19 significantly impacted the culinary industry in Indonesia, leading to a decline in culinary and hospitality education. In response, STIEPARI Semarang collaborated with the Indonesian Chef Association (ICA) BPD Central Java to address the reduced interest in this field. The community service aimed to enhance the plating skills of high school and university students, focusing on traditional dishes. The program involved 10 students from vocational schools and university students majoring in hospitality in Semarang. Training sessions, led by ICA experts, concentrated on plating traditional foods like onde-onde, lumpia, gethuk, corobikan, kue ku, and others. Faculty members from UDINUS and STIEPARI, along with ICA Central Java members, actively participated. The initiative not only improved practical skills but also aimed to increase the market value of traditional dishes through appealing presentations. Results showed improved plating skills, especially with traditional dishes, contributing to higher sales potential. Furthermore, the initiative positively impacted the preservation of culinary heritage. Thus, this community service not only enhanced students' skills but also promoted and preserved traditional culinary practices, positively impacting education, tourism, and the culinary industry in Central Java.

Abstract

The digital era has fundamentally transformed public communication in Indonesia, presenting critical challenges through the escalation of neutral discussions into debates based on Ethnicity, Religion, Race, and Intergroup Relations (SARA) on social media platforms. This research aims to identify linguistic and interactional patterns that serve as markers of discourse transformation, analyze the role of platform algorithms in accelerating escalation, compare escalation characteristics across X, Threads, Instagram, and TikTok platforms, and develop predictive models for early detection of identity-based discourse escalation. The study employs a mixed-methods design with Digital Critical Discourse Analysis framework, integrating Social Network Analysis and controlled digital experiments. Data collection involved 1,247 discussion threads across four platforms and 28 in-depth interviews using stratified purposive sampling and maximum variation sampling. Analysis utilized statistical testing, machine learning pipeline with BERT-based models, and thematic analysis with inter-rater reliability ≥0.80. Results revealed four distinct transformation phases characterized by decreasing lexical diversity (TTR 0.67 to 0.29), increasing negative sentiment (0.12 to -0.73), and network fragmentation (density 0.34 to 0.12). The developed Transformative Discourse Model achieved 89.7% accuracy in predicting escalation events with 4-14 hours early detection capability. Platform-specific analysis showed TikTok as fastest escalation (14.2 hours) and Threads as slowest (31.8 hours). The research contributes Indonesian Digital Discourse Corpus, cross-platform comparative framework, and evidence-based intervention protocols, supporting digital literacy strengthening and radicalism prevention in Indonesian cyberspace.

Abstract

This community service program aims to increase the digital capacity and leadership of Indonesian Berkebaya Women (PBI) members through an approach that integrates traditional values with modern technology. The method used is Participatory Action Research (PAR), with the subject of service as many as 13 members of the Banyumas branch of PBI. The activity was carried out in the form of an intensive workshop for three days at the Green Valley Hotel Baturraden, which included three main sessions: Digital Transformation Workshop, Leadership Development, and Content Creation Workshop. The results of the program showed significant achievements, where 80% of participants were able to actively master at least three social media platforms. In addition, 15 quality digital content was created that reflects the organization's cultural identity and values. The digital engagement rate increased from 15% to 50%, demonstrating the effectiveness of training strategies and active participation of participants. As an indicator of the program's sustainability, a Digital Task Force was formed and a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was prepared for the management of the organization's digital media. The theoretical findings of this program show that the integration between cultural values and digital capabilities is not contradictory, but rather mutually reinforcing in forming an organizational identity that is adaptive to changing times. This approach has succeeded in creating a culturally based empowerment model that can be replicated in other communities or organizations with similar characteristics. The emphasis on cultural sensitivity in the design of community service programs is the key to success, especially in the context of inclusive and sustainable digital transformation. This program makes a real contribution to strengthening women's capacity based on cultural communities, as well as opening up space for the development of relevant empowerment strategies in the digital era. Thus, this model can be a reference in designing social interventions that respect local wisdom while encouraging digital innovation.

Abstract

This study analyzes translation strategies employed in subtitling the "Marak" short film from Javanese to Indonesian and English, focusing on challenges of translating Javanese court culture for dual audiences with different cultural proximities to the source culture. Using qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis, the research examines 47 cultural terms across three subtitle versions, categorizing them according to Newmark's cultural classification framework and analyzing translation strategies through integrated theoretical frameworks of Gottlieb's subtitling strategies, Pedersen's cultural reference translation strategies, and Venuti's foreignization-domestication paradigm. The findings reveal significant differences in translation approaches between target languages: Indonesian translations predominantly employ transfer/retention strategies (59.57%), indicating cultural preservation orientation, while English translations favor direct translation (31.91%) and specification (25.53%) strategies, demonstrating accessibility orientation for international audiences. Social culture terms dominate the cultural vocabulary at 38.30%, reflecting the central importance of hierarchical relationships and honorific language in Javanese court interactions. The research contributes empirical evidence that effective dual-audience cultural translation requires strategic differentiation based on audience cultural proximity rather than uniform translation solutions, with implications for audiovisual translation practice and cultural preservation in contemporary media contexts.
