Abstract

Many elementary students struggle to comprehend abstract mathematical concepts due to a lack of connection with their real-life experiences. This study explores how Balinese traditional literature can serve as a medium for ethnomathematics to enhance students’ mathematical literacy. Using a qualitative approach, the research involved six teachers and elementary students. Data were collected through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and analysis of Balinese traditional texts. The findings indicate that integrating traditional literature into mathematics instruction enhances student engagement, deepens conceptual understanding, and develops problem-solving skills through contextual examples. These results align with previous research emphasizing the role of ethnomathematics in culturally responsive mathematics education. However, challenges such as limited resources and the need for teacher training were also identified. This study contributes to the development of more meaningful and context-based mathematical learning approaches in elementary education. Future research should focus on developing ethnomathematics-based learning resources and assessing the long-term impact of this method on students’ mathematical literacy.

Abstract

Abstract

Many students still need to understand the importance of learning mathematics. In addition, students feel very bored when studying mathematics. Based on this, this research aims to analyze the application of a contextual approach assisted by project assessment on mathematics learning achievement in terms of numerical ability in Class V. This type of research is experimental research that uses only a Control Group Design research design. The research sample consisted of 180 people who were selected using the Random Sampling technique. The data collection method uses tests. The data collection instrument uses test questions. The data obtained was processed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) through the F test, followed by the Tukey test. The results found that the mathematics learning achievement of students who studied with a contextual approach assisted by project assessment was higher than those who studied with conventional learning. Second, there is an interaction effect between the learning approach and numerical ability on students' mathematics learning achievement. Third, for students with high numerical abilities, the mathematics learning achievement of students who study with a contextual approach assisted by project assessment is higher than those who study with conventional learning. It was concluded that the contextual approach assisted by project assessment affected mathematics learning achievement regarding numerical abilities in fifth-grade students.

Abstract

Students with deaf-mute disabilities in inclusive elementary schools often face significant barriers in accessing verbal instruction, particularly in subjects that require abstract reasoning such as mathematics. This study aims to explore the difficulties in learning mathematics experienced by students with deaf-mute disabilities in inclusive elementary schools and analyze the need for the use of assistive technology to support their learning. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews and classroom observations. The research participants consisted of one teacher, two hearing impairment students, two parents, and one principal. Data analysis was carried out using the data triangulation method. The results of the study indicate that students with deaf-mute disabilities have difficulty in understanding mathematical concepts that are delivered verbally, especially in abstract terminology. The findings also reveal that visual and interactive assistive technology is needed to help students understand mathematics material better. Teachers, parents, and students expect technology that combines animation, video, interactive images, and physical devices that support direct interaction with learning materials. Based on these findings, VirtuMath, as an assistive technology that integrates visual and sensory representations, is proposed as a potential solution to support mathematics learning for hearing impairment students.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the validity of sign language-based virtual manipulatives media for teaching mathematics to deaf-mute students in inclusive elementary schools. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE development model. Validation was conducted by three categories of experts: media expert, inclusive instructional design expert, and mathematics content expert. The instrument used was a validation sheet featuring a Likert scale and a qualitative feedback column. The validation results showed that the media achieved an average score of 94.73%, placing it in the "very valid" category. These findings indicate that the developed media has met technical, pedagogical, and inclusive criteria and is feasible for use in the implementation stage of learning. This research contributes to the development of adaptive and accessible digital learning media for students with special needs, particularly those who are deaf-mute, and supports the implementation of quality inclusive education.

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence has created new opportunities for enhancing mathematics learning, including in the preparation of prospective elementary school teachers. This study describes the use of artificial intelligence as a pedagogical tool in mathematics courses at the Primary School Teacher Education Program of Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha during the even semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. A descriptive quantitative approach was applied to 118 students enrolled in Elementary Algebra and Arithmetic, Elementary Numeracy, Measurement and Geometry, and Elementary Mathematics Teaching. Data were collected through an online questionnaire covering demographic characteristics, frequency of use, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, learning engagement, ethical awareness, and attitudes toward artificial intelligence. The results show high mean scores for perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, learning engagement, and positive attitudes, while frequency of use and ethical awareness remain at moderate levels. ChatGPT emerged as the most frequently used platform, followed by Photomath, Perplexity, Gemini, QuillBot, Canva AI, and GeoGebra AI features, primarily for generating explanations, checking solutions, and designing instructional materials. These findings indicate that prospective elementary school teachers have developed favorable perceptions and a willingness to integrate artificial intelligence into mathematics learning, yet the moderate levels of usage frequency and ethical awareness highlight the need for structured training and explicit guidance to promote consistent and responsible application of artificial intelligence in mathematics education. Strengthening ethical understanding and providing systematic practice are essential to ensure that future teachers can leverage artificial intelligence effectively to improve mathematics learning in elementary schools.
