Abstract

Abstract: Metacognitive abilities can influence how students learn independently to achieve academic success. For this reason, the study aimed to examine how project-based learning can enhance students’ metacognitive abilities and identify students’ metacognitive awareness. To understand those goals, three steps of data collection were done, including pre-test, post-test, observation, and questionnaires. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were conducted to better understand the problem and the results. As a result, the ability of students to solve metacognitive problems has improved. The Gain index from the student learning process is 0.7, means it has a significant increase. It was also explained that their metacognitive abilities had developed judging by the changes in their ability categories that were observed during project implementation. Several aspects, including search strategy and planning, were evident in students' metacognitive awareness after project-based learning.

Abstract

This study aims to explore Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in relation to global warming materials, self-efficacy, and learning motivation among high school students. This study employed a quantitative descriptive method, involving 268 students (119 males and 149 females) from three high schools in West Java, Indonesia. The instruments used in this study included two-tier multiple-choice questions to measure higher-order thinking skills (HOTS), the Physics Learning Self-Efficacy (PLSE) scale to assess self-efficacy, and a Likert scale questionnaire to evaluate learning motivation. Findings revealed that students excelled in analyzing and evaluating tasks but struggled with tasks involving creation. Self-efficacy was moderate, with students showing confidence in their theoretical knowledge but less so in applying it to real-world situations. Learning motivation was generally high, particularly in terms of resilience and achievement, though persistence and engagement required improvement. However, the regression analysis indicated no significant relationship between self-efficacy and HOTS or between learning motivation and HOTS, reflecting that self-efficacy and learning motivation alone do not directly predict students' performance in HOTS. These results emphasize the need for educational strategies that promote HOTS, enhance self-efficacy, and sustain learning motivation to equip students for increasingly complex global challenges.

Abstract

Argumentation is a fundamental aspect of scientific literacy, enabling students to construct, justify, and evaluate claims based on evidence. However, traditional assessments emphasize rote memorization rather than developing reasoning skills, highlighting the need for a more effective evaluation approach. This study aims to develop and validate the Inquiry-Driven Essay Assessment (IDEA) framework to assess students' argumentation skills in static fluids. The research employs the ADDIE model. The participants comprised 26 eleventh-grade students from a Bandung, West Java private school who had prior knowledge of static fluid concepts, including hydrostatic pressure, buoyant force, and the principles of floating and sinking objects. The findings indicate that the developed assessment instrument demonstrates high validity and reliability, with strong internal consistency and alignment with learning objectives. The claim generation aspect obtained the highest average score, while the evidence analysis, justification, and support aspects require further improvement. The study concludes that the IDEA framework can serve as an effective tool for assessing and enhancing students' argumentation skills. The implications of this research suggest that implementing the IDEA framework can provide a more comprehensive and objective evaluation approach in science education, thereby assisting educators in fostering students' critical thinking and argumentation skills more effectively.

Abstract

Objective: Conceptual change is a research trend that continues to develop with various innovations being carried out. The research aims to conduct a literature study on conceptual change and how it contributes to science education. Method: The data was collected by searching for literature sources for articles using specific criteria. Ten articles were synthesized in more depth to answer questions from the research conducted. Result: The results of this research state that methodology and assessment tools influence the form and objectives of research data to be achieved both qualitatively and quantitatively. Apart from that, the concepts in science education are more focused on the physics concepts contained in it. In addition, the findings from these ten articles have a positive impact on science education, especially on material rich in concepts. Novelty: In this way, in making changes to students' conceptions, it is necessary to carry out preliminary studies related to the profile of students and the sample group that you want to research so that it can become a reference for the direction of the research you want to complete.
