Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the role and impact of refutational text on student conceptions and learning outcomes. Utilizing meta-analysis methods, this study sourced articles from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, covering publications from 2001 to 2023. The article selection process adhered to the PRISMA technique, implemented systematically in several stages to ensure rigor and transparency. The meta-analysis used the random-effects model to account for variability among studies, offering a more generalized understanding of the effects of refutational text across different contexts and populations. The results were synthesized through a Forest plot, revealing a standard mean difference with a P value of <0.01, indicating a statistically significant effect of refutational text on students’ conceptions. This suggests that the use of refutational text substantially influences learning, particularly in addressing misconceptions. Additionally, the study highlighted that while the potential for applying refutational texts in Indonesia is promising, the number of global and internationally indexed publications on this topic remains limited. This lack of extensive research limits the broader application of refutational text in educational contexts. However, the findings suggest that refutational text holds significant promise for science education, especially for topics where students commonly hold misconceptions about difficult concepts. Further research is recommended to explore its full potential and to encourage the publication and wider application of refutation texts in science education.       Keywords: refutation text, meta-analysis, conception, conceptual change.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to determine the profile of students regarding literacy skills for global warming material. This research uses a quantitative descriptive method to reveal the results of the research obtained based on students' responses to the 10 questions developed. This research was conducted at a school in Surabaya with a total of 15 respondents consisting of 4 men and 11 women. The results obtained were then analyzed using the Rasch Model with Winstep software to make it easier to map the level of instrument validity and the level of students' literacy skills. The results of this research reveal that the relationship between the instrument developed and students has very poor validity and reliability values with a value obtained of 0.22. However, the results of further analysis can map item difficulty levels and students' ability levels based on the Wright Map where students who have very high literacy skills are coded 01LK and 08PK while the most difficult item is Q2. Apart from that, students who have very poor literacy skills are good at coding 07LK while the easiest item is with code Q1. In this way, there is a need to improve problem instruments and further research to continue to develop the potential of scientific literature, not only on global warming material. Keywords: instruments, literacy scientific, measurements, rasch model. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v24i4.pp912-922

Abstract

This study aims to explore research and publication trends related to refutation texts over the past ten years using bibliometric analysis. Data was obtained from the Scopus database of 115 documents published in 2015-2024 for “refutation texts” or “refutational texts” or “rebuttal texts”. The data obtained showed fluctuations in the number of publications, with the highest peak occurring in 2022. The main authors in this field include Kendeou, Sinatra, and Danielson, with the largest contributions coming from the United States, followed by European countries such as Germany and Canada. The dominant research subjects are social sciences and psychology, with a focus on the use of refutation texts to create cognitive conflict and change students’ conceptions. Keyword co-occurrence analysis shows a close relationship between refutation texts, misconceptions, and conceptual change. These findings highlight the importance of a refutation text-based approach in overcoming students’ misconceptions, as well as opening up opportunities for further research on its application in technology-based learning and student motivation.
