Abstract

This study uses the interpretivism paradigm to analyze the contrast between conventional and contemporary teaching methods in learning the Arabic language. The conventional teaching method emphasizes mastery of grammar and vocabulary through structured methods, while the contemporary method prioritizes communication and understanding of Arab culture. A literature review was conducted to understand the perspectives of experts in Arabic language learning and shows that contemporary teaching methods are more suitable for Arabic language teaching because it emphasizes communication skills and understanding of Arab culture. However, some studies show that conventional teaching methods are still crucial in strengthening the structured mastery of grammar and vocabulary. This article recommends using contemporary teaching methods in Arabic language learning by paying attention to the structured mastery of grammar and vocabulary and developing appropriate learning strategies based on students' needs and contextual factors.

Abstract

This study aims to design teaching materials for Insya' subjects and explain the design process and its outcomes. The research method used was Design-Based Research (DBR), which belongs to Research and Development (R&D) and consists of four stages: problem identification and analysis, solution design, iterative testing cycles, and final reflection. The data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with both quantitative and qualitative analysis applied. The results show two main findings: first, the teaching materials design goes through three stages, namely setting objectives, setting materials, and formulating evaluations. Second, the outcomes that have been designed were stated to be 'good' category.

Abstract

This community service project focuses on enhancing translation competence through active learning at Pondok Pesantren Mambaus Sholihin Gresik. The main objective was to improve the translation skills of santri by engaging them in participatory and collaborative learning processes. The research employed a participatory action research (PAR) approach, involving close collaboration between the research team, educators, and santri as active subjects. Activities included interactive translation practice, group discussions, and continuous mentoring to foster better understanding and application of translation techniques. The project successfully increased technical translation skills, motivation, and critical learning attitudes among santri. Furthermore, it led to the emergence of self-managed learning groups and local leaders, indicating a social transformation towards a more independent and adaptive learning culture within the pesantren. This model demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating active learning and community empowerment to achieve sustainable educational improvements in pesantren contexts. Recommendations include institutionalizing active learning methods and strengthening local facilitators to maintain and expand the program’s impact.

Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates the implementation of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) strategies to enhance Arabic spoken language performance among students of the Arabic Language Education Department at Universitas Kiai Abdullah Faqih, a pesantren-based institution in East Java, Indonesia. The study involved five high-achieving students and three lecturers. Data were collected over a three-month period through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis (audio recordings and reflective journals), and analyzed thematically using NVivo 14. The findings reveal eight key strategies categorized according to the basic psychological needs outlined in SDT: (1) Autonomy a) integration of salafi-modern materials, b) personal goal setting, c) self-recording); (2) Competence d) daily speaking challenges, e) role-play activities); and (3) Relatedness f) language community engagement, g) classroom discussions, h) utilization of social media. The study concludes that fulfilling the needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness through SDT-based strategies significantly improves speaking performance. Moreover, it addresses a research gap concerning the application of SDT in developing Arabic oral proficiency in pesantren-based educational settings, with implications for curriculum and pedagogy design grounded in intrinsic motivation.

Abstract

يهدف هذا البحث إلى دراسة تطبيق نموذج التعليم القائم على المهمة في تعليم مهارة الكلام لدى متعلمي اللغة العربية. ويمنح المتعلمين فرصة واسعة لاستخدام اللغة بصورة تلقائية وهادفة. وتشير نتائج التحليل إلى أن نموذج التعليم القائم على المهمة يسهم في تعزيز طلاقة المتعلمين، وتحسين دقتهم اللغوية، وتطوير قدرتهم على اختيار المفردات المناسبة والتفاعل في مواقف تواصلية متنوعة. كما يوفر هيكل هذا النموذج، المكوّن من مراحل ما قبل المهمة، ودورة المهمة، والتركيز اللغوي، والبيئة التي تشجع على المشاركة النشطة وبناء الثقة في استخدام اللغة. ويخلص البحث إلى أن التعليم القائم على المهمة جيدة في تعليم مهارة الكلام بشكل متدرج وتواصلي.
