Abstract

This study analyzed the morphological errors that occurred in students’ descriptive writing using surface strategy taxonomy in error analysis. Further, this qualitative research describes the common morphological errors that appeared in students’ descriptive writing. The data were derived from 70 students’ descriptive writing of grade XI consisting of 2 classes. They were taken by using a simple random sampling method. The data were classified by using surface strategy in error analysis and were analyzed by using qualitative data analysis The result of the research showed that some errors occurred at the morphological level. They include inflection, derivation, preposition, article, copula be, pronoun, and auxiliary verbs.  Inflection is a common error that mostly appeared with a percentage of 39%, while preposition is the lowest number of morphological errors with a percentage of 2 %. It also found that 73%  of omission errors frequently appeared in students' descriptive writing. Thus, it illustrated that many students still mostly omitted some inflection, derivation, preposition, article, copula be, pronoun, and auxiliary verbs.

Abstract

Abstrak Penerapan kecerdasan buatan (AI) dalam Pengajaran Bahasa Inggris (ELT) telah berkembang pesat secara global, seiring dengan kemajuan dalam pemahaman ilmiah tentang teknologi AI. Integrasi AI ke dalam pengajaran bahasa memfasilitasi pengembangan dan penyampaian materi pendidikan berkualitas tinggi, sehingga mengoptimalkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh pemahaman yang komprehensif tentang perspektif siswa bahasa tentang integrasi AI dalam konteks ELT di Universitas Pahlawan. Peneliti melakukan penelitian cross-sectional dengan menggunakan survei daring untuk mengumpulkan data tentang karakteristik demografi, pengetahuan, dan sikap yang terkait dengan AI di antara Pembelajar Bahasa Inggris. Sampel praktis yang terdiri dari 59 pembelajar bahasa dipilih untuk berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Data yang dikumpulkan kemudian dianalisis menggunakan uji chi-kuadrat untuk memeriksa hubungan dan perbedaan di antara berbagai faktor yang terkait dengan keterlibatan AI dalam konteks pembelajaran bahasa. Penelitian kami mengungkapkan bahwa di antara 59 pembelajar bahasa yang disurvei, 41 responden (69,49%) melaporkan pernah mendengar tentang kecerdasan buatan dan menunjukkan pemahaman mendasar tentang konsep-konsep seperti kecerdasan buatan/pembelajaran mendalam/pembelajaran mesin. Sebaliknya, 24 responden (40,68%) menyatakan kekhawatiran mengenai keberadaan AI, sementara 39 peserta (66,10%) mempertahankan pandangan positif terhadap integrasinya. Khususnya, 11,86% peserta menyatakan kekhawatiran bahwa AI dapat menimbulkan ancaman terhadap peluang kerja mereka di masa depan sebagai guru bahasa Inggris. Hasil tersebut menunjukkan bahwa meskipun siswa memiliki pengetahuan dasar tentang AI dan menyatakan keinginan untuk mengintegrasikannya ke dalam praktik pendidikan mereka, ada kebutuhan signifikan untuk mengeksplorasi dan memanfaatkan potensi penuh AI sebagai alat pembelajaran transformatif. Hal ini menggarisbawahi pentingnya mengembangkan strategi pendidikan yang ditargetkan untuk meningkatkan kemahiran siswa dalam memanfaatkan teknologi AI secara efektif. Abstract

Writing is a crucial aspect of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, yet many students face difficulties in applying grammatical rules and writing mechanics. This research aims to analyze the types and frequency of grammatical and mechanical errors in the English writing of second-semester students in the Undergraduate Program in Elementary Teacher Education at Universitas Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. A qualitative descriptive method was used, involving 40 student writing samples selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through document analysis and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed a total of 78 grammatical and mechanical errors. The most frequent error types were capitalization (23.08%), verbs (16.67%), and nouns (10.26%). Errors also appeared in the use of pronouns, articles, adjectives, and prepositions. These results show that students still struggle with fundamental grammar and mechanics, especially in sentence structure. The research recommends more focused grammar instruction and writing practice to reduce errors and improve writing accuracy and fluency.

Abstract

Pelestarian bahasa daerah melalui pendidikan merupakan salah satu upaya yang penting dalam menjaga keberagaman budaya di Indonesia. Artikel ini membahas pelaksanaan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang bertujuan untuk mengembangkan media pembelajaran berbasis bahasa daerah di SDN 011 Langgini, Kabupaten Kampar, Riau. Pengembangan media pembelajaran ini bertujuan untuk memperkenalkan dan melestarikan bahasa Melayu Kampar melalui penggunaan media yang relevan, seperti buku cerita rakyat, video pembelajaran, lagu daerah, dan permainan tradisional. Pelatihan diberikan kepada guru untuk meningkatkan keterampilan mereka dalam merancang dan menggunakan media pembelajaran berbasis bahasa daerah. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa media pembelajaran berbasis budaya lokal efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman siswa terhadap bahasa Melayu Kampar, meningkatkan motivasi mereka dalam belajar bahasa daerah, serta berkontribusi pada pelestarian budaya lokal. Program ini diharapkan dapat menjadi model bagi sekolah-sekolah lain dalam pelestarian bahasa daerah melalui pendidikan.

Abstract

Extramural English (EE) merupakan kegiatan bahasa Inggris yang diadakan di luar kelas. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan kesempatan bagi pembelajar bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan Keterampilan Bahasa Inggrisnya; Oleh karena itu, para dosen menyelenggarakan program pengabdian kepada masyarakat, seperti Seminar Extramural English bagi mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai (UP). Seminar ini dilaksanakan pada tanggal 13 Juni 2023 dan dibagi menjadi tiga seris. Tiga orang dosen program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris diundang sebagai pembicara. Pembicara pertama membawakan topik “Pengantar EE”. Istilah EE, tujuan EE, dan beberapa kegiatan EE disampaikan kepada siswa. Sedangkan pembicara kedua membawakan topik “Extramural English: a New Reality in English Language Teaching”. Pembicara menjelaskan EE sebagai realitas baru dalam Pengajaran Bahasa Inggris, implementasi EE di Indonesia, dan alasan munculnya EE di Indonesia khususnya dalam Pengajaran Bahasa Inggris. Kemudian pemateri ketiga memperkenalkan beberapa permainan yang digunakan sebagai kegiatan EE. Pembicara fokus pada game digital, seperti; video game, game komputer, game mobile, atau platform game. Mastermime, misalnya, didemonstrasikan langsung oleh pemateri. Para dosen berharap dengan terlaksananya program ini dapat membantu mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris memperoleh pengetahuan baru tentang Extramural English dan dapat membantu mereka untuk menjadi pembelajar bahasa Inggris yang aktif dan mandiri.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is a crucial skill in English language learning, yet many university students still face difficulties in understanding spoken texts, particularly in identifying specific information, grasping the main idea, and making inferences. This study aimed to investigate the effect of using podcasts as a learning medium on students’ listening comprehension at the English Language and Education Study Program of the University of Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. The participants consisted of 23 first-semester students selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a listening comprehension test comprising 30 items measuring three indicators: specific information, gist, and inference. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test due to non-normal data distribution. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ listening comprehension, with the mean score increasing from 47.22 in the pretest to 74.72 in the posttest. The statistical analysis showed a significance value of 0.000 (p 0.05), indicating a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. These results demonstrate that podcast-based learning has a significant positive effect on improving students’ listening comprehension. Therefore, podcasts can be considered an effective supplementary medium for listening instruction in English language education.

Abstract

Perkembangan teknologi digital telah mendorong perubahan signifikan dalam praktik pembelajaran, khususnya melalui pemanfaatan Artificial Intelligence (AI) sebagai bagian dari strategi inovasi pendidikan. Guru dituntut tidak hanya menguasai penggunaan AI secara teknis, tetapi juga mampu menerapkannya secara aman, etis, dan sesuai dengan tujuan pembelajaran. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memperkuat kapasitas guru-guru di Kabupaten Kampar dalam menerapkan AI-Powered Learning secara kritis, bertanggung jawab, dan berkelanjutan. Kegiatan dilaksanakan pada 19 Januari 2026 di Aula Universitas Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai dengan melibatkan guru dari berbagai jenjang pendidikan. Metode pelaksanaan menggunakan pendekatan edukatif dan partisipatif melalui pemaparan materi, pelatihan, diskusi, dan refleksi bersama. Materi yang disampaikan meliputi konsep dasar AI dalam pembelajaran, perbedaan Generative AI dan Non-Generative AI, potensi dan keterbatasan AI, serta aspek etika, keamanan data, dan kesesuaian output AI dengan tujuan pedagogis. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kesadaran dan pemahaman guru terhadap peran AI sebagai alat bantu pembelajaran yang mendukung pembelajaran aktif dan pengembangan keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi. Guru juga semakin memahami pentingnya mengkritisi dan memverifikasi output AI sebelum digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran. Meskipun kegiatan ini memiliki keterbatasan pada waktu pelaksanaan dan variasi literasi digital peserta, hasil pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan berbasis konsep dan praktik mampu mendorong perubahan sikap dan kesiapan guru dalam memanfaatkan AI secara lebih efektif, aman, dan etis. Kegiatan ini diharapkan menjadi dasar pengembangan praktik pembelajaran inovatif berbasis AI di sekolah secara berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Writing is a productive skill that involves expressing thoughts and ideas effectively in written form. However, mastering writing in English is often challenging. At SMA Negeri 1 Kampar Utara, students still face difficulties in developing clear and coherent text. It has been observed that the students struggle to organize ideas and construct well-structured writing. One of the contributing factors to these writing difficulties is the reliance on conventional teaching methods, such as the expository teaching method which tend to be teacher-centered, and result in low writing skill achievement. This study aims to investigate the effect of inquiry based learning on students' writing skill at SMA Negeri 1 Kampar Utara. Employing a quantitative quasi-experimental design, the research involved 52 students selected through a total sampling technique. The participants were divided into two groups : Class XI-1 as the experimental group class (26 students) and the Class XI-2 as the control group class (26 students). The sampling technique used was total sampling. The instrument of the research was writing test, data were collected though pre-test and post-test. The data analysis techniques include normality testing,homogeneity, and T-tests. The independent samples t-test obtained a t-value of 2.863 t-table 2.009 with significant value of p = 0.006 0.05, then H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. These findings demonstrate that IBL produced a statistically significant effect on writing skill compared to the expository teaching method. Thus, inquiry-based learning significantly enhances students' writing skill at SMA Negeri 1 Kampar Utara.

Abstract

Classroom observations at SMAN 1 Kuok indicated that many eleventh-grade students have difficulty identifying adjectives in descriptive texts and often confuse them with other word classes, such as nouns and verbs. This challenge negatively affects their reading comprehension and descriptive writing skills. Based on this issue, the research question of this study is: How is the students’ mastery on identifying adjectives in descriptive text at XI grade students of SMAN 1 Kuok? The purpose of this study was to analyze students’ mastery on identifying adjectives in descriptive text at XI grade students at SMAN 1 Kuok. This research applied a qualitative descriptive approach, using a written test and an unstructured teacher interview as instruments. The test asked students to identify adjectives in a descriptive passage, classify their type, and explain their function. The teacher interview provided insight into students’ learning experiences, strategies used in teaching adjectives, and observed learning obstacles. The test results showed that only 3 out of 18 students (16.7%) reached the “Excellent” level, while 11 students (61.1%) were in the “Very Poor” category. Many students failed to differentiate adjectives from other parts of speech and lacked confidence in answering the test. From the teacher’s interview, it was revealed that although adjectives had been taught previously, students still showed low understanding in practical application. The teacher also noted that students were more familiar with adjectives in Bahasa Indonesia and recommended using contextual and visual learning strategies to support comprehension. This study highlights the need for improved vocabulary instruction, especially in the context of identifying adjectives within descriptive texts.
