Abstract

An overview of environmental and socio-cultural sanitation is very interesting to explore. Environmental sanitation and the social culture of coastal communities in fishing villages are inseparable aspects of their daily lives. This study aimed to understand the description of environmental sanitation and socio-culture of the coastal community of fishing village, Medan Belawan District, Indonesia, in order to create sustainable and equitable solutions for them. This study is a descriptive observational study. A total of 100 informants were included in this study. Data analysis was carried out univariately to present environmental sanitation and socio-cultural data. Waste processing in the environment is still very bad, where garbage is generally just piled up, and no waste management efforts are carried out. The community also does not have healthy latrines, which shows that sanitation conditions are still not a good report. The majority report also does not have refrigerators as food storage, and the community, in general, has not implemented a clean and healthy lifestyle. The source of clean water and processed drinking water treatment also still show things that are not good. Water sources and processing that are not optimal make the majority of people experience skin problems. The overview of environmental sanitation and the socio-culture of coastal communities in fishing villages shows how important it is to increase efforts to keep the environment clean and maintain cultural values in their daily lives.

Abstract

Waste management continues to be a significant challenge in major cities, including Medan City which generates 2,000 tons of waste daily. The types, quantities, and varieties of waste produced are steadily increasing due to annual population growth and evolving consumption patterns and lifestyle changes within the community. This community empowerment initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of students at SMPN 31 Medan. The study employed the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) method. The program targeted 25 participants from Grade XI. Activities began with participants completing a pre-test, followed by material presentation by the research team, a post-test assessment, and culminated in hands-on recycling projects where students created piggy banks and pencil cases from used plastic bottles and straws. The program demonstrated significant success, evidenced by a 25.6-point increase in participants' knowledge scores and marked improvement in their inorganic waste recycling skills.

Abstract

Each year, more than 500,000 cases of Leptospirosis are reported worldwide. This disease is spread globally, especially in humid tropical countries like Indonesia. Based on the 2023 Indonesian Health Profile, there were 2,554 cases with a CFR of 8%, and Central Java ranked second (884 cases). This study aims to determine the relationship between climate factors and the incidence of Leptospirosis in Central Java in 2019–2023. The study used a quantitative approach with an ecological study design. The sample includes data on Leptospirosis incidence, air temperature, humidity, rainfall, and sunshine duration for 60 months. This study utilized secondary data sourced from the Central Java Provincial Health Office, accessed through the Central Java PPID website, for Leptospirosis case data and the BMKG website for Climate data. Data processing was carried out using the Spearman rho correlation test method. The results are the relationship between air temperature and leptospirosis incidence (p=0.053; r=-0.251), the relationship between humidity and leptospirosis incidence (p=0.000; r=0.546), the relationship between rainfall and leptospirosis incidence (p=0.022; r=0.295), and the relationship between the duration of sunlight and leptospirosis incidence (p=0.002; r=-0.383). It was concluded that humidity, rainfall, and duration of sunlight were significantly related to leptospirosis incidence, while temperature was not. It is recommended that the government strengthen vector control, especially during the rainy season, that the community maintain personal and environmental hygiene, and that further research use a wider time and area coverage with more complex methods.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia is a developing country that still faces two major challenges in health development: unresolved issues of communicable diseases and a high incidence of non-communicable diseases, which continue to be problematic. Dyspepsia is one of the most common non-communicable diseases worldwide. In July 2024, data showed 134 cases of dyspepsia in the Gebang sub-district. This research aims to determine the relationship between dietary patterns and the incidence of dyspepsia in Paya Bengkuang Village, Gebang District, Langkat Regency. Methods: The study was conducted using a quantitative descriptive method with a population of 4,661 people and a sample of 100 people. The sampling technique employed was stratified random sampling. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires distributed to each sample Results: The statistical test results indicated a p-value of 0.001 (p-value <0.05) between dietary patterns and the incidence of dyspepsia. Conclusion: The study concludes that there is a significant relationship between dietary patterns and the incidence of dyspepsia in Paya Bengkuang Village.
