Abstract

This study aims to examine and compare the ideological visions of Sekarmaji Marijan Kartosuwiryo with Hamka's interpretations in Tafsir Al-Azhar, particularly regarding the Islamic concepts of faith, migration (hijrah), and jihad, and their implications for the formation of an Islamic state in post-independence Indonesia. Employing a comparative analysis methodology and bibliographic research approach, this study collected and analyzed data from a variety of primary and secondary sources, including books, journal articles, and historical documentation. The analysis reveals fundamental differences between Kartosuwiryo, who advocates for the establishment of an Islamic state based on strict Sharia principles with a radical approach, and Hamka, who emphasizes the necessity of spiritual and moral transformation through hijrah and jihad. While Kartosuwiryo views hijrah and jihad as political tools for social and political restructuring, Hamka interprets these concepts as a spiritual journey supporting internal change and personal growth.

Abstract

The intersection of modern genetics and Islamic theology is a burgeoning field of inquiry. This study delves into how technological advancements, especially in genetics, complement the teachings of the Al-Qur’an. Modern genetics, which traces its origins to Gregor Mendel's pioneering work on heredity, provides a scientific framework for understanding the transmission of genetic information across generations. Contrary to the view that science and religion are mutually exclusive, this research, supported by the Ministry of Religion through the scientific interpretation found in Tafsir Ilmi Kemenag, demonstrates their potential synergy. It particularly focuses on Quranic verses that align with genetic principles, such as the developmental stages of a human embryo detailed in Surahs Ar-Rahman, Al-Insan, As-Sajadah, Al-Mu'min, and Al-Hajj. These verses metaphorically describe the embryonic stages that echo modern genetic descriptions of DNA's role in human development. Our findings illustrate that the Quran anticipates certain modern scientific discoveries, offering a unique blend of scriptural interpretation and empirical science to bridge the gap between faith and rational inquiry.

Abstract

Indonesia, as the country with the largest Muslim population globally, faces challenges in implementing religious moderation to maintain harmony and peace amidst diversity. One such challenge is the rejection of constructing non-Muslim places of worship in several regions, indicating ongoing resistance to religious pluralism. This study aims to analyze Quranic verses related to religious moderation and the construction of non-Muslim places of worship through a comparative study between Tafsir Al-Azhar by Buya Hamka and Tafsir Juz 'Amma by Firanda Andirja, focusing on Surah Al-Hajj verse 40, Al-Baqarah verse 256, Al-An'am verse 108, and Al-Kafirun verses 1–6. The research employs a qualitative method with a literature study approach, analyzing the interpretations of both scholars on these verses. The findings indicate that Buya Hamka in Tafsir Al-Azhar*emphasizes the importance of tolerance and respecting the rights of non-Muslims to worship and build places of worship, while affirming that there is no compromise in matters of faith and monotheism. In contrast, Firanda Andirja in Tafsir Juz 'Amma emphasizes a stance of disengagement regarding the welfare of non-Muslims and tends not to support the construction of non-Muslim places of worship, although still advocating for tolerance. Abstract

This study examines the communal recitation of Surah Al-Fath within the ngeropok tradition in Kepandean Kidul, Serang, as a form of Living Qur’an practice deeply rooted in the religious and cultural fabric of Banten’s Muslim community. Held during the Maulid al-Nabi celebration, the ngeropok ritual merges devotional worship with a symbolic tribute to the legacy of the Banten Sultanate. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, this research draws on participatory observation, in-depth interviews with religious figures and community members, and documentation of cultural artifacts. Thematic analysis, guided by the Miles and Huberman framework. Findings indicate that the recitation of Surah Al-Fath serves not only as a spiritual practice but also as a tafsīr praksis—a lived interpretation of the Qur’an that reinforces collective memory, social cohesion, and local Islamic identity. Despite adaptations in the digital era, such as evolving modes of communication and charitable giving, the tradition retains its core values of gratitude, unity, and spiritual reverence. This study underscores how local Islamic traditions like ngeropok embody dynamic expressions of sacred texts, continually reinterpreted in response to contemporary cultural and social contexts.

Abstract

The interpretation of monotheistic verses in Juz ‘Amma plays a pivotal role in shaping Islamic theological discourse. Amidst the rise of concealed shirk practices and spiritual disorientation in contemporary Muslim societies, Salafi-oriented Qur’anic exegesis has reemerged with a strong emphasis on the purification of faith. This study analyzes Firanda Andirja’s interpretation of three key surahs in Juz ‘Amma—Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas—and compares them with classical (Al-Qurthubi) and modern contextual (Quraish Shihab) commentaries. Using a qualitative library-based approach and thematic (maudhu’i) method, this study examines how different exegetical traditions approach core tenets of tawhid, especially within the framework of rububiyyah, uluhiyyah, and asma’ wa sifat. The findings reveal that Firanda employs a rigid, literalist, and theologically apologetic style rooted in Salafi epistemology, while Al-Qurthubi’s exegesis is philological and jurisprudential, and Quraish Shihab adopts a reflective, contextual style. While Firanda’s approach strengthens theological clarity, it tends to lack social engagement and ethical reflection. This study contributes to the development of Salafi exegetical literature and offers critical insight into the role of monotheistic interpretation in addressing contemporary religious challenges.

Abstract

This article explores the dialectic between normative and contextual approaches in interpreting the Qur’anic concept of sustenance (rizq) through a comparative thematic analysis of two influential Indonesian tafsir works: Tafsir An-Nur by Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy and Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab. The study focuses on the interpretations of Surah Al-Baqarah verses 168 and 172, which articulate the principles of lawful (ḥalāl), wholesome (ṭayyib), and grateful consumption. Employing a qualitative library research method and thematic exegesis, this study examines the interpretive orientations, methodological frameworks, and the contemporary relevance of rizq. Tafsir An-Nur emphasizes legalistic dimensions within a fiqh-normative framework, prioritizing adherence to Islamic legal boundaries. In contrast, Tafsir Al-Misbah advances a contextual approach, foregrounding spirituality, ethical consumption, and social responsibility. The dialectical relationship between these approaches reveals the multidimensional nature of rizq and underscores their complementarity in addressing modern materialist challenges. This article contributes to the development of thematic Qur’anic interpretation in Indonesia and proposes a more holistic conceptualization of rizq as an ethical and spiritual guide in contemporary Muslim life.

Abstract

This article aims to elucidate the issues that arise when individuals undertake the process of child adoption, with reference to the principles delineated in the Qur'an. The practice of treating a non-biological child as one's own is often deemed acceptable, this is evident from the prevalence of adoptive parents who assert their adopted children as their biological offspring. This study employs library research utilizing a thematic exegesis method. The analysis integrates interpretations from the "Al-Munir" exegesis by Wahbah Az-Zuhaili, the Ayat Suci Lenyepaneun exegesis by M. Emon Hasim, and the "Al-Mishbah" exegesis by M. Quraish Shihab on Surah Al-Ahzab verses 4-5. The findings indicate that "Tabanni," which means "considering someone else's child as one's own," clearly does not proscribe the act of adopting a child but rather prohibits the act of claiming an adopted child as a biological one. This injunction also seeks to abolish the pre-Islamic Arabian practice during the Jahiliyah era, wherein adopted children were considered biological. Muslims who adopt children are mandated to care for and love their adopted children as their own, with the stipulation that an adoptive father does not serve as the marriage guardian for his adopted daughter and that adoptive parents and adopted children do not have mutual inheritance rights.
