Abstract

The intersection of modern genetics and Islamic theology is a burgeoning field of inquiry. This study delves into how technological advancements, especially in genetics, complement the teachings of the Al-Qur’an. Modern genetics, which traces its origins to Gregor Mendel's pioneering work on heredity, provides a scientific framework for understanding the transmission of genetic information across generations. Contrary to the view that science and religion are mutually exclusive, this research, supported by the Ministry of Religion through the scientific interpretation found in Tafsir Ilmi Kemenag, demonstrates their potential synergy. It particularly focuses on Quranic verses that align with genetic principles, such as the developmental stages of a human embryo detailed in Surahs Ar-Rahman, Al-Insan, As-Sajadah, Al-Mu'min, and Al-Hajj. These verses metaphorically describe the embryonic stages that echo modern genetic descriptions of DNA's role in human development. Our findings illustrate that the Quran anticipates certain modern scientific discoveries, offering a unique blend of scriptural interpretation and empirical science to bridge the gap between faith and rational inquiry.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and compare the ideological visions of Sekarmaji Marijan Kartosuwiryo with Hamka's interpretations in Tafsir Al-Azhar, particularly regarding the Islamic concepts of faith, migration (hijrah), and jihad, and their implications for the formation of an Islamic state in post-independence Indonesia. Employing a comparative analysis methodology and bibliographic research approach, this study collected and analyzed data from a variety of primary and secondary sources, including books, journal articles, and historical documentation. The analysis reveals fundamental differences between Kartosuwiryo, who advocates for the establishment of an Islamic state based on strict Sharia principles with a radical approach, and Hamka, who emphasizes the necessity of spiritual and moral transformation through hijrah and jihad. While Kartosuwiryo views hijrah and jihad as political tools for social and political restructuring, Hamka interprets these concepts as a spiritual journey supporting internal change and personal growth.

Abstract

Indonesia, as the country with the largest Muslim population globally, faces challenges in implementing religious moderation to maintain harmony and peace amidst diversity. One such challenge is the rejection of constructing non-Muslim places of worship in several regions, indicating ongoing resistance to religious pluralism. This study aims to analyze Quranic verses related to religious moderation and the construction of non-Muslim places of worship through a comparative study between Tafsir Al-Azhar by Buya Hamka and Tafsir Juz 'Amma by Firanda Andirja, focusing on Surah Al-Hajj verse 40, Al-Baqarah verse 256, Al-An'am verse 108, and Al-Kafirun verses 1–6. The research employs a qualitative method with a literature study approach, analyzing the interpretations of both scholars on these verses. The findings indicate that Buya Hamka in Tafsir Al-Azhar*emphasizes the importance of tolerance and respecting the rights of non-Muslims to worship and build places of worship, while affirming that there is no compromise in matters of faith and monotheism. In contrast, Firanda Andirja in Tafsir Juz 'Amma emphasizes a stance of disengagement regarding the welfare of non-Muslims and tends not to support the construction of non-Muslim places of worship, although still advocating for tolerance.

Abstract

Islamic education is unique as it is based on the guidance of the Quran, requiring educators to continuously enhance their morals and apply teaching methods that are easily accepted by students. Ki Hajar Dewantara proposed the educational trilogy, Ing Ngarso Sung Tulodho, Ing Madya Mangun Karsa, and Tut Wuri Handayani, which resonates with Islamic values. This study aims to analyze this educational trilogy from the perspective of Buya Hamka's Tafsir Al-Azhar, specifically Surah Al-Ahzab verse 21, Al-Isra verse 36, and An-Nahl verse 43. Using a qualitative approach and library research method, this study links Ki Hajar Dewantara's educational concepts with Islamic educational principles. The findings reveal that the educational trilogy aligns with Islamic teachings, emphasizing the importance of exemplarity, motivation, morality, and independence in the educational process. Teachers play a crucial role as role models and facilitators, aiding students in developing their potential according to Islamic values. This study underscores the necessity of professionalism and morality in teachers to cultivate students who are not only intellectually capable but also possess noble character. Integrating the educational trilogy with Islamic values is hoped to be a solution to current educational challenges and moral crises. Abstract

This study examines the story of Ashabul Kahfi in Qur’an, Surah al-Kahfi 18:9–26, through Fazlur Rahman’s Double Movement approach in order to formulate an ethical reading of ‘uzlah (withdrawal or seclusion) in relation to the contemporary Indonesian hashtag #KaburAjaDulu (roughly, “just leave first”). The study employs a qualitative library research design with a conceptual-hermeneutic orientation. Its primary sources include the Qur’anic text, classical and contemporary Qur’anic commentaries, particularly Tafsir Ibn Kathir and M. Quraish Shihab’s Tafsir al-Misbah, and scholarly works on Rahman’s hermeneutics. Secondary sources consist of academic discussions on #KaburAjaDulu as a digital discourse. The analysis proceeds in two stages: first, by examining the socio-historical context of the Qur’anic narrative, and second, by identifying its ideal-moral principles and considering their relevance to contemporary social unease. The study finds that ‘uzlah in the story of Ashabul Kahfi is ethically meaningful when it emerges as a last resort under severe pressure, after moral deliberation, and for the preservation of faith and integrity. In contrast, #KaburAjaDulu should be read as a fluid digital discourse that may express frustration, critique, satire, or migration aspirations. The article argues that the story of Ashabul Kahfi offers ethical criteria for assessing discourses of “leaving,” without turning the hashtag into a direct equivalent of Qur’anic ‘uzlah.
