Abstract

Pediatric cancer not only impacts children physically but also significantly affects their psychosocial well-being and that of their caregivers. Traditional play therapy has been widely used to address psychological distress in young patients, but digital transformation opens new avenues to enhance its accessibility and effectiveness. This study aims to develop and evaluate a mobile application-based game to support the psychosocial health of children with cancer and their caregivers. The research adopted a design-based approach involving need analysis, app development, and usability testing. The application includes interactive education about cancer, relaxation exercises, and caregiver support communities. Effectiveness was assessed through a pre-and post-use evaluation involving children undergoing cancer treatment and their caregivers in selected hospitals. Significant improvements were found post-intervention: children experienced a 50% decrease in anxiety and a 47.3% improvement in mood; caregivers reported reduced stress (33.7%) and a 53.9% increase in perceived social support. Both children and caregivers expressed high satisfaction and willingness to continue using the app. The developed mobile application positively impacts the emotional resilience and psychosocial conditions of pediatric cancer patients and their caregivers. Integrating play therapy into a digital format provides an accessible, engaging, and effective tool to enhance quality of life during treatment.

Abstract

Normal childbirth was recommended due to its cost-effectiveness, shorter hospital stays, absence of anesthesia, and lower risks of infection and bleeding. However, most laboring women experienced pain that triggered fear and anxiety, potentially leading to complications. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of birthing ball exercises in reducing pain intensity and anxiety in laboring mothers at independent midwifery practices in the Kubu Raya District. A quasi-experimental design with two groups was used. A total of 60 participants were selected using consecutive sampling and divided into an intervention group (birthing ball exercise) and a control group (routine breathing exercises). Pain and anxiety levels were measured after the intervention using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Face Pain Rating Scale (FPRS), and Numerical Analogue Scale (NAS), all of which had been validated and shown to be reliable. Data were analyzed using correlation tests, paired t-tests, and the Wilcoxon test. The characteristics of respondents were homogeneous, with most having basic education and being multigravida. Results showed significant differences between the intervention and control groups in reducing pain and anxiety levels (p < 0.05). In conclusion, birthing ball exercises were effective in reducing pain and anxiety during the first stage of normal labor.

Abstract

The dynamics of mental health are significantly shaped by cultural factors, and collectivist cultures offer a unique lens for understanding mental well-being. This study explores mental health within the context of collectivist culture in Indonesia, focusing specifically on indigenous communities. Indonesia, with its vast array of indigenous cultures, presents a unique environment to examine how traditional practices, communal values, and social cohesion affect mental health outcomes. This paper explores how the interplay of cultural norms, community relationships, and traditional coping mechanisms influences individual and collective mental health. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the study employs interviews, focus groups, and ethnographic observation in indigenous communities across Java, Bali, and Sumatra. The results suggest that the collectivist orientation, which emphasizes social harmony, interdependence, and familial ties, has both positive and negative effects on mental health. On the one hand, community support and collective responsibility foster resilience and reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues. On the other hand, the pressure to conform to societal norms and uphold collective values can lead to feelings of isolation, stress, and suppression of individual mental health needs. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of mental health in collectivist societies and provide valuable insights into culturally sensitive mental health interventions. The paper concludes with implications for mental health policy and practices in indigenous communities and the broader Southeast Asian region.
