Abstract

Background: Melastoma malabathricum L. is a wild shrub that traditionally used in South-East Asia as wound healing. Plant extracts contain phenolic, flavonoid and tannin. The leaves extract also has many pharmacological activity but the anti-aging activity of the leaves extract has not been studied. Methods: The leaves of M. malabathricum was defatted with chloroform and then refluxed by ethanol. Quercetin content of the leaves extract was determined by HPLC. Anti-aging activity was evaluated by anti-elastase, and anti collagenase inhibitor activity of the leaves extract by a fluorometric method. Results: Percentage yield of the M. malabathricum leaves extract was 16.53% w/w. Quercetin content of the leaves extract was 9.20 mg/g extract. The leaves extract of M. malabathricum L. has anti-elastase and anti collagenase activity with IC50 80.39±2.36 ppm and 63.3±3.32 ppm, respectively. Conclusions: M. Malabathricum leaves extract was potential as an anti-aging cosmetic raw material.

Abstract

The Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) is a community group dedicated to fostering family and societal well-being, with health being one of its key focus areas. PKK members are pivotal in enhancing family immunity, particularly during heightened risk from bacterial, viral, and other infections. The community's preference for traditional medicine, which has been empirically proven to be safe and effective, such as *Andrographis paniculata* (sambiloto) and *Curcuma longa L.* (turmeric), serves as a viable solution for boosting family immunity. This program aimed to provide education and workshops to 50 PKK members in Kendalpayak Village through education sessions, pre-and post-tests, a herbal drink preparation workshop, and follow-up consultations. The education covered topics on the immune system, the definition and application of traditional medicine, and the rational use of herbal remedies. The program results revealed a significant improvement in participants' knowledge, with average pre-test scores of 81.71 rising to 93.90 in post-tests, reflecting a 12.19% increase. Furthermore, the proportion of participants with "Good" knowledge levels rose from 75.61% to 92.68%. The workshop successfully trained participants in practical herbal preparation by demonstrating the production of three types of immune-boosting herbal drinks, supported by educational materials that had obtained intellectual property rights. Participant satisfaction with the program was notably high, averaging 96.06%. These results demonstrate the program's tangible benefits in enhancing community knowledge and skills, potentially supporting family health and well-being in the future.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Bakalan Village is rich in potential medicinal plants and vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides), but its use by the elderly community of Karang Werda Hasanudin is still limited to traditional consumption with low economic added value. This program develops innovative Vetiver Spa products that meet pharmaceutical standards, using the "Authentic Communication" strategy to increase physical well-being and economic independence among the elderly. Using a PAR approach with a total of 30 participants across generations-elderly, pre-elderly, and youth-the stages of implementation include: (1) socialization and mapping of potential; (2) training in the formulation of spa products (foot bath) according to household GMP; (3) training in creative packaging (macramé and crochet); and (4) mentorship on cultural branding narrative. This program succeeded in creating innovative variants of hygienic spa products. Clinically, vetiver foot spa therapy reduces systolic blood pressure in the elderly by 7.7% from 147.44 to 136.11 mmHg and resulted in significant relaxation effects. Socially and economically, this authentic communication strategy succeeded in amplifying the local wisdom narrative of partners, as proven by the publication in Times Indonesia, which reached more than 153,000 readers, and hundreds of organic views on YouTube. Herbal health innovation combined with authentic communication is effective in enhancing elderly health status while opening up new markets with strong cultural branding. It is recommended that the "PELUKAN" model be replicated in other tourism villages, with support from local government policies for certification. Keywords: Authentic Communication, Bakalan Village, Creative Economy, Elderly Well-being, Indonesian Vetiver Spa.

Abstract

Abstract: The aging global population poses significant health challenges, particularly for the elderly. In Indonesia, traditional medicine is increasingly utilized, including in Pojok Village, Dampit District, Malang Regency, which has a relatively high elderly population. However, there are still limitations in public understanding regarding the safe and scientific use of traditional medicine. This community service aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of health workers, particularly posyandu cadres, in managing elderly health through scientific-based traditional medicine. The method involved socialization, counseling, and workshop on making herbal medicine, attended by 33 posyandu cadres and 71 elderly participants. The program is divided into two stages: health screening to identify disease patterns, which then serve as the basis for counseling the cadres. Pre-test and post-test evaluations showed a significant improvement in understanding the benefits and safe use of traditional medicine, increasing from 52% to 85%. These results indicate the success in enhancing the participants' skills in utilizing traditional medicine for elderly health. This initiative is expected to contribute to the improvement of community-based healthcare services through the safe and rational use of traditional medicine.

Despite their benefits, the improper use of essential oils can pose significant health risks. This community service project aimed to enhance community understanding, particularly among members of the Family Empowerment and Welfare (PKK), in the utilization of essential oils as aromatherapy for self-medication purposes at home. Education and training activities were conducted in three sub-districts in Malang City and Regency, involving 50 participants with diverse educational and occupational backgrounds. Through counseling sessions and hands-on practice in aromatherapy oil preparation, participants were provided with information on safe and effective usage, as well as the potential benefits and risks of essential oil utilization. Participants' knowledge was assessed before and after the interventions using pre- and post-tests. The analysis results indicated a statistically significant improvement in participants' understanding of the application of essential oils as aromatherapy for self-medication at home (sig = 0,00). This community service activity can assist communities in understanding the benefits of aromatherapy as a safe and effective self-medication alternative at home.
