Abstract

Merdeka curriculum has been implemented as a means to adapt to the situation and challenges of the 21st century. Two of the 21st century teaching and learning characteristics are the technology integration and student-centeredness. High engagement in the process of teaching and learning is the indicator of the 21st century education runs well. However, Indonesian students, at the school under the study, the engagement was low and students were passive. Therefore, this research was aimed at figuring out the use of Nearpod as a means of promoting students’ engagement as well as it was attempted to find out the students’ perceptions of Nearpod in the teaching and learning process to gain feedback on the students’ acceptance and Nearpod usefulness in language teaching and learning. This research was conducted at SMAN 1 Menganti, Gresik. There were 49 students as participants in this study. In order to seek the data, this research employed a qualitative experimental design with a field note, a questionnaire, and FGD as the instruments. Then, the data were analyzed with thematic analysis. The findings indicated that Nearpod could be used as a means of promoting students’ engagement unless it is supported with the stable internet connection, and the students perceived neutral opinion regarding the use of Nearpod.

Abstract

This act of community service in the form of a workshop for senior high school teachers was to enhance the participants’ professionalism in teaching in the 21st century. The integration of technology is unavoidable. Therefore, this workshop is aimed at introducing one of the Learning Management Systems (LMS) named Nearpod that can help teachers teach effectively. The method used in this community service activity is Service Learning (SL) which consists of planning and preparation stage, implementation stage, and evaluation stage. In the planning and preparation stage, there are problem identification activities, distributing questionnaires about teacher’s teaching habits and pretest. The implementation stage consists of material delivery session, demonstration, practice, discussion, and assignments. Then, the evaluation stage through committee discussions that consider the results of the pretest and posttest as well as the satisfaction questionnaire that has been distributed to participants. 96 workshop participants, who are senior high school teachers in various regions of East Java Province, gave a positive response to the implementation of this workshop. There was an increase in the percentage score for the pretest (57,6%) and posttest (85,4%), which shows that there was an increase in teacher understanding and skills after attending the workshop, namely 27,8%. To conclude, this workshop activity is considered very useful for teachers in improving the quality of learning and developing teaching professionalism, especially in designing teaching and learning activities for Gen Z.

Abstract

This paper strived to portray the typical English teaching Methods applied by English Secondary teachers. To find the answer, there were twenty-two participants involved in this study, they were from public and private schools in East Java. The study employed qualitative methods with questionnaires, interviews and observations as the instruments. To gain the data, the researchers put all possible teaching activities or techniques taken from the theory of teaching English as a foreign language in the questionnaire. Then, the observations were done to see the actual teaching and learning process in the classroom. At last, the interview was employed to enrich the data. This current study found that mostly teachers under the study claimed to use various teaching activities in the teaching and learning process in their teaching. However, during the observations, teaching activities or techniques mainly were done with the Grammar Translation Method.
