Abstract

Abstract

Sexually Transmitted Infections commonly abbreviated as STIs are caused by various types of microorganisms that are usually transmitted through sexual contact. Palembang is the largest contributor of STI and HIV/AIDS cases in South Sumatra. A lecture and discussion with a PowerPoint presentation and posters were used to carry out this community service project. This activity aimed to determine the increase in knowledge about STI and HIV/AIDS after health education for junior high school students in Palembang. A pre-and post-test questionnaire containing ten questions was utilized as the evaluation instrument. According to the frequency distribution of participants' knowledge before health education, 59.5% were in the category of moderate knowledge. In the meantime, after receiving health education, the participants' knowledge improved to 33.3% in the moderate category and 64.3% in the good category. Based on the mean score after health education, the value was 10.48 points greater than before health education with a p-value of 0.00. This health education about STI and HIV/AIDS can significantly improve the knowledge of participants. The most important thing in this community service was to educate students to prevent this disease, thus reducing the stigma and prevalence of these diseases.

Abstract

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) encompass a range of infectious diseases that can be attributed to parasites, bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Inaccurate diagnosis can lead to ineffective treatment and increase transmission rates. Furthermore, in an era of widespread antimicrobial resistance, it is imprudent to administer empirical antimicrobial treatment without revelation of potential etiology information which could leads to suboptimal clinical outcomes. Patients suffering from STDs frequently seek initial assistance at primary healthcare facilities, such as community health centres. Enhancing the understanding of health professionals regarding the current state of STDs, including proper diagnostic techniques, will contribute to the improvement of health services. A simple test that can be performed is a microscopic examination of specimens containing genital secretions. The accuracy of microbiological examination heavily relies on the quality of the specimen. Providing training to general practitioners, nurses, midwives, and laboratory personel on specimen collecting techniques and microscopic examination techniques is needed to enhance the precision of diagnosis. The training involved both presentations and hands-on experience in collecting specimens for microscopic examination, as well as techniques for simple microscopic examinations to confirm the etiological diagnosis of STDs. An increase in the trainees' understanding was evident after the training, as reflected in the rise in the average post-test score compared to the pre-test score. Health workers have also been able to independently practice specimen collection techniques and conduct microscopic examinations after attending the training. This training has improved health workers' proficiency in managing STDs and contributed to a higher diagnosis coverage rate.

Abstract

Introduction. Oxidative stress caused by an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and antioxidant defenses leads to various diseases. Arcangelisia flava, a medicinal plant, contains antioxidant-active phenols and flavonoids. This study evaluates the total phenol and flavonoid content and the antioxidant activity of the ethanol fraction of A. flava stem. Methods. An experimental study was conducted using 750 grams of A. flava stem. The sample underwent fractionation and was analyzed using Folin-Ciocalteu and AlCl3 methods to determine total phenol and flavonoid content. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH method. Data were analyzed using regression equations and IC50 values. Results. The ethanol fraction contained 57.81 ± 3.28 mg GAE/g of total phenol and 114.6 ± 1.02 mg QE/g of total flavonoid. The IC50 value for the ethanol fraction was 72.88 ppm, indicating strong antioxidant activity, albeit less potent than ascorbic acid (IC50 7.37 ppm). Conclusion. The ethanol fraction of A. flava stem is a potential natural antioxidant source.

Abstract

Background: Palembang City has the highest prevalence of anemia in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Protein contributes to hemoglobin formation and insufficient protein intake increases the risk of anemia. However, Sumatera studies on protein intake based on protein sources in pregnant women are still limited. Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between animal protein consumption and anemia prevalence in pregnant women. Methods: A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted from July to October 2024 at six public health centers and seven private midwife clinics selected to represent Palembang’s geographic diversity. A total of 62 pregnant women in their second or third trimester were recruited using consecutive sampling. Dietary intake was assessed via interviewer-administered 2×24-hour recalls on non-consecutive days. Protein intake was analyzed using modified NutriSurvey 2004 and categorized based on the Indonesian RDA. Hemoglobin levels were measured using venous blood samples and classified according to trimester-specific anemia thresholds. Bivariate analysis with Fisher’s exact test was used to examine the association between animal protein intake and anemia prevalence. Results: The Fisher Exact Test showed a statistically significant association between animal protein consumption levels and anemia in pregnant women in Palembang City (p = 0.018). The mean total protein intake was 80.40 ± 20.53 g/day, with animal and vegetable proteins contributing 40.22 ± 18.63 g/day and 40.91 ± 24.5 g/day, respectively. Mean hemoglobin level was 11.18 ± 1.17 g/dL. Conclusion: Sufficient consumption of animal protein was found to be more protective against the occurrence of anemia.

Abstract

Introduction. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease marked by persistent hyperglicemia. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasingly prevalent in Japan, affecting approximately 10% of adults with diabetes, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in 2020. Maintaining medication adherence is critical for T2DM management and complications prevention. This review aimed to synthesize factors influencing medication adherence in T2DM patients in Japan. Methods. This systematic review followed PRISMA-P guidelines, using the keywords The keywords “risk factors", "medication adherence", "diabetes mellitus", and "Japan”. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, five cross-sectional studies were selected for analysis. Results. Medication adherence among Japanese T2DM patients ranged from 65% to 85%. Positive factors linked to higher adherence included higher family income, knowledge of drug effect, absence of complication, increased number of medications, frequent healthcare utilization, structured lifestyle perception, and physical functionality. In contrast, variables such as gender, education level, and type of medication showed no significant influence in multiple studies. The use of validated scales highlighted correlations between high adherence and improved HbA1c outcomes. Conclusion. Medication adherence is multifactorial, driven by clinical and socio-behavioral determinants. Knowledge and perception-based interventions, combined with lifestyle modification and simplified therapy regimens, may enhance adherence in Japanese T2DM patients.
