Abstract

The main objective of this study is to examine the Islamic and Malay elements that are acculturated in the Dabus dance ritual of Perak, Malaysia. The focused group of this study is the Dabus of Tanjung Bidara village, estimated to have been established since the 1818s. However, throughout that time, the perception of the Malay community has not been strong yet, specifically regarding the ritual relationship of the Dabus dance with Islamic values. In fact, not infrequently, Dabus dance rituals are seen as contradicting the values of Islam itself. It is even seen over as skewed by some of the Malay community. However, in terms of history, meaning, practice, and ritual function, the Dabus dance itself cannot be separated from Islam. The study was designed as a field study. The data collected is qualitative and analysed critically using ritual theory, cultural symbols, and acculturation. Data was collected through interviews, field observations, and documents. Other data sources include a review of text, photos, videos, and relevant articles. The findings show that 1) the process of Malay-Islamic acculturation in Dabus dance rituals has been since the arrival of Dabus dance in the Malay peninsula and continues until now; 2) one of the most significant Islamic-Malay acculturation methods and strategies is the reinvention of the Dabus dance over time; 3) Islamic-Malay acculturation includes not only physical forms (forms, structures, and ritual elements) but also non-physical aspects (doa, zikir, selawat, berzanji, belief).

Abstract

Arts education in elementary schools plays a vital role in shaping children’s character, creativity, and cultural identity. However, in Indonesia, its implementation faces challenges due to the fragmented organization of materials and the absence of standardized assessment frameworks. This study aims to identify dominant approaches to organizing arts curricula, evaluate relevant assessment models, and derive policy insights to strengthen primary school arts education. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 30 peer-reviewed articles published between 2018 and 2024, selected from databases such as Scopus and ERIC, the analysis applied PRISMA guidelines and thematic coding to map key patterns. The review identified three main organizational approaches: Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE), STEAM-PBL integration, and local wisdom-based methods. Among evaluation frameworks, the CIPP model emerged as the most comprehensive because it addresses outcomes along with context, input, and process. The findings show that each approach offers distinct strengths. DBAE provides a structured academic foundation, STEAM-PBL promotes creativity and critical thinking, and local wisdom methods reinforce cultural identity. Despite this, Indonesia’s curriculum lacks a cohesive and measurable framework that integrates these elements. This study provides conceptual insights to inform curriculum development and policy formulation, aligning arts education with global educational shifts and Indonesia’s cultural context.

Abstract

This study explores the representation and integration of cultural values in traditional Chinese dance education through a comprehensive analysis of curriculum documents, arts education policies, and instructional materials. In the context of modernization and globalization, dance education faces critical challenges in preserving the depth of cultural meaning amid growing emphasis on performativity and competitive orientation. Employing a systematic literature review and document analysis, this research assesses the extent to which cultural values—including historical, philosophical, and socio-cultural dimensions—are embedded within the dance education system. Findings indicate that, despite notable integration efforts, the representation of cultural values remains limited and is often marginalized by a predominant focus on technical and aesthetic aspects. Key obstacles include resistance to pedagogical innovation and the dominance of performance-driven paradigms. Nonetheless, the study identifies innovative potential through interdisciplinary approaches and the utilization of digital technologies, which can revitalize the teaching and learning of traditional dance in a contextually relevant and adaptive manner. The pedagogical implications of effectively integrating cultural values include the reinforcement of students’ cultural awareness and identity, and the sustainable preservation of intangible cultural heritage. This research recommends the development of a holistic curriculum, the empowerment of educators, and cross-disciplinary collaboration as key strategies to enhance the role of traditional dance education in cultural preservation and the formation of a national identity aligned with contemporary developments.

Abstract

Dancesport, a form of social dance that blends competition with artistry, serves as both a cultural enrichment activity and a fitness choice for many. Despite its benefits, traditional Dancesport instruction typically requires in-person classes, which can limit accessibility due to constraints of time and location. As a result, many enthusiasts miss out on fully experiencing the joy of dance. However, advancements in computer networks and communication technology have paved the way for online teaching to become a practical alternative. Addressing the specific needs of modern Dancesport education, this paper focuses on the development of a video teaching system using MVC architecture. By integrating technologies such as Freemarker templates, Hibernate frameworks, the MySQL 5.0 database, and Hadoop, the system is designed to enhance Dancesport learning. The project includes a comprehensive analysis of the functional requirements for the system, followed by an overall design plan. Key functional modules are thoroughly examined to ensure the system meets the unique demands of Dancesport instruction, providing an innovative solution for accessible and engaging dance education.

Abstract

Site-specific dance choreography develops as a direct reaction to a specific location’s unique physical, architectural, and cultural characteristics. Improvisation is significant in this context for enhancing the dancer’s bodily awareness of space. Previous studies have recognized the relationship between dancer and site; however, the role of improvisation in expressing the unique spatial characteristics of a performance site has not been adequately explored. This study investigates the role of improvisational techniques in enabling dancers to adapt, respond, and establish stronger connections with site-specific elements, including structural, environmental, historical, and emotional aspects. This research utilizes a qualitative methodology, incorporating descriptive analysis and in-depth interviews with five experienced, site-specific dance practitioners in Malaysia. The findings identify four key stages in which improvisation enhances spatial embodiment, clarifying the relationship between choreographers and performers with space as a dynamic and interactive element of their practice. This work contributes to the ongoing discussion on site-specific choreography by illustrating the evolving role of improvisation in enhancing the relationships between performers and their environments.

Abstract

Digital transformation has reshaped the ways in which culture is transmitted, including Riau Malay Dance, which is currently facing a decline in interest among younger generations and the dominance of popular culture. At the same time, social media platforms such as TikTok have developed into informal learning spaces that are closely integrated with the everyday lives of adolescents. This study emerges from the gap between, on the one hand, the threat of fading interest in Riau Malay Dance and, on the other hand, the limited number of studies that specifically examine TikTok as a medium for the preservation and learning of traditional dance in informal community settings. This research employs a qualitative method with a digital ethnography approach through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of TikTok content related to Riau Malay Dance. The findings indicate that TikTok functions as a participatory learning space that facilitates processes of observation, imitation, and movement modeling, fosters intergenerational learning communities, and archives dance in digital format through tutorial content, performances, and creative reinterpretations. However, several challenges arise, including the commodification of culture, superficial cultural understanding, gaps in digital literacy, and algorithmic bias toward popular content. Scientifically, this study offers a renewed understanding of digital cultural transmission and underscores the importance of digital cultural literacy strategies and content standards to balance media innovation with the authenticity of Riau Malay Dance in the global era.
