Abstract

This study presents a comparative analysis of the technical effectiveness and cost efficiency of three ground reinforcement methods—geogrids, soil nailing, and gabion retaining walls—for slope stabilization in highway construction projects. Numerical modeling using geotechnical software was conducted to evaluate the performance of each method based on the increase in the factor of safety (FS) and the degree of slope deformation. The results indicate that soil nailing is the most technically effective method, providing the highest FS increase (up to 1.68) and the best control over deformation. However, it also incurs the highest implementation cost. In contrast, geogrids proved to be the most cost-efficient solution, although with a more moderate FS increase. Meanwhile, gabion retaining walls offer a good compromise between performance and cost. The study concludes that the optimal choice of a ground reinforcement method must be based on a multi-criteria analysis that considers specific geotechnical conditions, safety priorities, and budget availability. The findings of this research are expected to serve as a practical guide for engineers in designing safe, efficient, and sustainable slope stabilization solutions.

Abstract

Traffic congestion has become a major transportation challenge affecting mobility, economic activities, and regional accessibility, particularly along national roads that serve as primary transportation corridors. This study aims to analyze the effect of traffic volume on traffic congestion levels along national roads in Nias Regency, Indonesia. A quantitative descriptive approach combined with correlational analysis was employed to examine the relationship between traffic volume and roadway operational performance. Primary data were collected through manual traffic surveys conducted during morning, midday, and evening observation periods over seven consecutive days. Vehicle counts were converted into Passenger Car Units (PCU) based on the Indonesian Highway Capacity Guidelines (PKJI 2023). Traffic congestion levels were evaluated using road capacity, Volume-to-Capacity (V/C) ratio, average travel speed, and Level of Service (LOS). The influence of traffic volume on congestion was analyzed using simple linear regression. The results indicated an average traffic volume of 1,535.5 PCU/hour, an estimated road capacity of 1,850 PCU/hour, and a V/C ratio of 0.83, corresponding to Level of Service (LOS) D, which represents unstable traffic flow approaching roadway capacity. Regression analysis produced a correlation coefficient (R = 0.914) and a coefficient of determination (R² = 0.835), indicating that approximately 83.5% of the variation in traffic congestion levels could be explained by traffic volume. The statistical test confirmed that traffic volume has a significant positive effect on traffic congestion along national roads in Nias Regency (p < 0.001). The study concludes that increasing traffic demand substantially reduces roadway operational performance and recommends integrated congestion management strategies, including traffic control optimization, roadside activity regulation, parking management, and long-term infrastructure improvements to support sustainable regional transportation.

Abstract

High-rise buildings in coastal environments are exposed to complex geotechnical and environmental conditions that significantly affect foundation performance. This study evaluates the behavior of high-rise building foundations under variable soil and load conditions using field investigation, laboratory testing, and numerical modeling. Soil stratigraphy, groundwater fluctuations, and load variability were analyzed to assess settlement, differential tilting, and stress distribution. Results indicate that pile foundations outperform mat and combined mat-pile foundations in controlling differential settlement and maintaining structural serviceability. Groundwater level changes and load variations notably influence foundation performance, emphasizing the need for site-specific, performance-based design. The integrated methodology provides insights for resilient foundation design strategies in challenging coastal environments.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the soil conditions at the construction site of the BNKP Hosiana Church by conducting cone penetration tests (CPT) as a basis for designing a safe and efficient foundation system. The CPT was performed to obtain cone resistance (qc), sleeve friction (fs), and friction ratio (Rf) across various soil depths. The results indicate the presence of three main soil layers: a soft clay layer at depths of 0–2 meters with low bearing capacity, a silt or stiff clay layer at 2–6 meters with moderate bearing capacity, and a dense sand or hard layer below 6 meters characterized by high bearing capacity. Analysis based on the Robertson approach suggests that shallow foundations are not recommended due to the weak surface soil conditions. Deep foundations, such as driven piles or bored piles, are considered the most suitable option to reach the competent hard layer capable of supporting the structural load effectively. Therefore, the cone penetration test proves to be an essential tool for strengthening the planning of the BNKP Hosiana Church building project, particularly in ensuring the long-term safety and structural stability of the facility.

Abstract

This Community Service Program (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat/PKM) aimed to support school environmental planning through land measurement activities at SMA Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Idanoi. The main problem faced by the partner school was the absence of accurate and well-documented land measurement data to serve as a basis for environmental arrangement and infrastructure planning. The implementation method consisted of several stages, including coordination with school stakeholders, technical preparation, direct land measurement in the field, data processing, and the formal handover of measurement results to the school. The program applied a participatory approach by involving school representatives during the measurement process as a form of technical assistance and knowledge transfer. The results showed that the land measurement activities successfully produced systematic and reliable data on land area and spatial division, which can be utilized as a foundation for school environmental management and future infrastructure development. In addition, the activity enhanced the school’s understanding of the importance of spatial data in educational environment planning. Therefore, this community service program provided practical and sustainable benefits for the school and strengthened the role of higher education institutions in supporting the improvement of educational environments.

Abstract

Transportation network planning is an important aspect in civil engineering that is related to infrastructure development to support community mobility. One way to handle this planning is to use mathematical models. Mathematical models function to model various aspects of the transportation system, from traffic flow, distribution, to efficient infrastructure planning. In this context, models can be applied to minimize costs, travel times, or improve traffic distribution between points in a transportation network. Basically, mathematical models for transportation network planning consist of several types, such as optimization models, flow models, and simulation models. Optimization models are often used to determine the best route or optimal network capacity. Meanwhile, flow models are used to analyze how traffic moves in the network and how system adjustments can reduce congestion. On the other hand, simulation models allow designers to test various scenarios dynamically, providing a more realistic picture of potential problems that may arise in the field. In addition, the use of mathematical models in planning transportation networks also takes into account external factors such as population growth, changes in travel patterns, and economic development. Therefore, a mathematical approach in transport network planning is not only useful for designing efficient infrastructure, but also for planning sustainable traffic management in the long term.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the utilization of local labor in construction projects in the Nias region and to identify the factors influencing their level of involvement. The research employs a descriptive quantitative approach, with data collected through questionnaires, interviews, and field observations. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique, involving construction workers, contractors, and project supervisors. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and factor analysis to determine the dominant factors affecting the use of local labor. The results indicate that the level of local labor involvement falls into a moderate category, accounting for approximately 60–70% of the total project workforce. The primary factor influencing the use of local labor is workforce competence, followed by contractor policies, education and training levels, as well as geographical and socio-cultural conditions. The use of local labor has a positive impact on increasing community income and employment opportunities; however, challenges remain in terms of work quality due to limited skills. This study concludes that optimizing the use of local labor requires improving competencies through training and certification, as well as strengthening policies that support local workforce empowerment. Synergy between the government, contractors, and the community is essential to achieving inclusive and sustainable construction development in the Nias region.
