Abstract

This research aims to find out the significant effect in using the PQRST Strategy on students' reading comprehension in procedure text at the ninth grade of SMPN 3 Kabila. The population of this research was all students of class IX SMPN 3 Kabila which only has one class with a number of students consisting of 24 students and the sample of this research was all students in class ninth totaling 24 students. The samples were determined using a saturated sampling technique. This research used a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design one group pre-test and post-test. There are two variables in this research, the PQRST strategy as the independent variable and the students’ reading comprehension in procedure text as the dependent variable. Data collection techniques in this research used a test, namely multiple-choice tests. The results showed that the mean score of the pre-test was 11.75, and the mean score post-test was 19.38. In addition, the results of the hypothesis of this research found that tcount > ttable or 24.04 > 2.069 with the level of significance α = 0.05. It means that the hypothesis (H1) of this research is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the PQRST strategy has a significant effect on students' reading comprehension in procedure texts at the ninth grade of SMPN 3 Kabila.

Abstract

Pandemic Covid19 attacked the education site by giving a limitation in the learning process which is without direct instruction between student and teacher. It caused teacher and student used the learning activities that make it possible to carry out learning using internet access through online learning. In the fact there are so many obstacles faced by English’ teacher also student in online learning such as the bad internet connection and the lack of internet quota for student also the decreased of student’ attendance. Qualitative method aims to investigates to understand and explores a phenomenon carried out by teacher in online learning especially to aims the strategies used by teacher in online learning. The subjects were four EFL teacher who were teaching during pandemic. The theory about learning strategies was used in this study to analyze the data.Moreover this study employed an interview technique to obtain the supporting data about English teacher’s strategies in teaching English by online. The result shows that several strategies used by English teacher for instance by using Google classroom, Quiper and agreement and also several obstacles such as internet connection, internet quota and students atandance.

Abstract

The aims of this research is to describe what are the students’ problems on the use of past participle V3. This research took place in SMK Negeri 1 Suwawa. This research used a qualitative method and took 15 students as the participants in this research. The data collected trhough interview as the main instrument and test as the supporting instrument.The results of this research students make a lot of mistakes in determining past participle and then, the need for educators to adopt effective teaching strategies that address the challenges faced by students when it comes to using past participle. Therefore, it can be concluded that students face challenges when it comes to the use of past participle. By addressing these issues, educators can help students improve their language skills and enhance their academic and professional success. The implementation of effective teaching strategies and resources can help students to gain a better understanding of past participle and develop the skills necessary to use it correctly in various contexts.

Abstract

This research explores the impact of implementing the Jigsaw technique as a cooperative learning strategy on the reading comprehension skills of 10th-grade students studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at SMA Negeri 1 Botumoito. The study specifically focuses on students' understanding of report texts, including their ability to identify main ideas, details, vocabulary, references, and inferences. The Jigsaw technique was chosen due to its potential to enhance cooperative learning and engagement among students. The study involved a sample of 60 students over eight weeks. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments, and the results were analyzed using paired samples t-tests. The analysis indicated a statistically significant improvement in students' reading comprehension, with mean pretest scores of 45.55 rising to posttest scores of 74.00. The t-test results (t = 0.000, p < 0.05) confirmed the hypothesis that the Jigsaw technique positively influences reading comprehension skills. Despite some challenges, such as time constraints and dynamics between academically strong and weak students, the research interventions facilitated a positive learning environment and stimulated students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These findings suggest that the Jigsaw technique is an effective strategy for improving reading comprehension in EFL contexts. The study recommends further research to explore the long-term impacts and adaptations of the Jigsaw technique in diverse educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the needs and design a teaching module for improving the English language skills of tourism managers in Tomini Bay. The ability to speak English is a crucial skill for competing in the global tourism market, especially in destinations aiming for international recognition. According to the survey, most tourism managers have limited English proficiency, particularly in speaking with foreign tourists. Findings show that 70% of respondents lack confidence in communicating in English, while 85% prefer hands-on learning methods like simulation or role-play. Thus, the Language Village program is designed as a practical solution, emphasizing real-world English learning contexts. This training is expected to enhance tourism service quality, improve English proficiency among managers, and directly contribute to the local community's economic welfare. The developed teaching materials focus on enhancing professional communication skills in the tourism industry.

Abstract

The objectives of this community service activity are 1) encouraging students and young farmers to master agricultural technology, 2) developing students' creativity in organic vegetable cultivation with hydroponic technology innovation, 3) utilizing organic waste such as animal manure, crop residues in the form of rice straw, sawdust  , husk charcoal, as a medium for organic fertilizer, 4) providing direct practice on how to make simple hydroponics, the importance of maintaining soil fertility for plants, and entrepreneurship.  Methods in the forming of direct application practice regarding making organic fertilizers, cultivating vegetables, and techniques for making simple hydroponics.  The locations of the activities are in the villages of Tunggulo, Tungulo Selatan, and Bongoime, Tilong Kabila District, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province.  This activity was attended by 34 students' participants from the Department of Agrotechnology and other departments at State University of Gorontalo and collaborated with young farmers, held for 40 days from September 8 to October 10, 2020. The results of the activity showed that community service activities in partner villages were carried out running well and according to the planned program.  Students and young farmers have succeeded in developing hydroponic manufacturing techniques with vegetable commodities and organic growing media that use compost of manure and husk charcoal

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the application of the Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) technique can improve students' reading skills in narrative texts. The study sampled 30 students from class IX-4 of SMPN 4 Gorontalo. To collect data, a multiple-choice test was used adapted from various fairy tale stories, including "Why Frogs and Mosquitoes are Enemies," "Unhelpful Friends," "The Hungry Mouse," "The Lion and the Mouse," "A Proud Tiger," and "A Cat and a Fox." The study employed a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. Results show that the mean score of the pre-test was 14.47, while the mean score of the post-test was 19.4. The hypothesis testing revealed that tcount ≥ tlist with a value of 18.84 2.048, indicating that the research hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) technique can improve the reading skills of class IX-4 students at SMP N 4 Gorontalo.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and overcome the challenges faced by students at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo in the TOEFL reading comprehension section. Despite extensive research on TOEFL reading comprehension, there remains a gap in practical, context-specific interventions tailored to Indonesian EFL learners. This study utilizes a mixed-methods approach to address this gap. First, a needs analysis was conducted through surveys and interviews to identify key difficulties. Subsequently, various instructional strategies, including vocabulary enhancement and reading strategy training, were implemented and evaluated. The results indicate that targeted interventions significantly improve students' reading comprehension skills. The findings contribute to the broader field of language education by providing practical solutions for educators and students to navigate the hurdles of TOEFL reading comprehension.Keywords: TOEFL, reading comprehension, vocabulary mastery, instructional strategies, EFL learners, Indonesian context.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the personality types of students in the English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo and to explore their pedagogical implications for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. A quantitative descriptive design was employed, involving 118 undergraduate students from three academic cohorts (2021–2022, 2022-2023, 2023-2024). Data were collected through an adapted version of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) developed by Eysenck and Eysenck (1975) and validated for Indonesian learners by Wulandari (2017). The instrument used a five-point Likert scale to measure extroversion and introversion tendencies. Descriptive statistics, including mean, standard deviation, frequency, and percentage, were computed using Microsoft Excel to determine personality distribution. The results revealed that most students (61.86%) were ambiverts, followed by extroverts (27.12%) and introverts (11.02%). These findings suggest that ELESP students tend to balance social engagement and reflective learning, offering advantages in diverse EFL classroom contexts. The study highlights the need for personality-responsive pedagogy that accommodates varied learner characteristics to promote more effective and inclusive language learning.

Abstract

This study investigates social conflicts associated with teen language use on social media and messaging applications such as WhatsApp, TikTok, and Instagram, as well as within the communication focus of schools and learning surroundings. The main research issue revolves around the tensions caused by the use of informal youth language, including slang, abbreviations, emojis, code switching, and the tensions from adults expecting a more formal communicative structure. This research employs an ethnographic approach, specifically the youth language analysis via metadata and corpus-based techniques. This study incorporated observations as well as focused and conflict-centered, specifically student-teacher, deep interviews. The principal findings state that the use of informal language and the clash of its use within the expectations of the school and learning habitat is a major source of conflict, thus contributing to the overall "understanding" of the intergenerational language clash. This along with the rapid dissemination of digital trends has contributed to social conflict. This research aims to bridge the gaps in literature by identifying the socio-communicative functions of youth language and by demonstrating the need to revise the intercooled framework of interaction to enhance effective school and digital communication
