Abstract

This paper discussed efforts to improve English learning skills using social networking. The author believes that most students now learning English as a foreign language certainly need more opportunities to practice excellently to relax their learning. However, progress in learning English is often identified with fluency in communicating with fellow students, not in terms of fluency in speaking using various social media applications so that such an atmosphere presents an open feel for students in the form of not only communicating in friendship but still looking for robust learning solutions. This review tries to describe how the benefits of social networks are not only valuable as friendships but can improve English proficiency for students in Indonesia. The data that we found was then analyzed from various sources and perspectives, which were the results of secondary data in book publications, scientific papers, and websites that discussed foreign language learning issues using social media networks. Based on the study results and discussion, we conclude that foreign language learning is like a social network. The reason is that through social media, there are now many types of social media that can be used to learn English in an effective and relaxed manner, all of which provide a variety of features and content that make learning more polite but still helpful.

Abstract

The song is a sequence of beautiful words, often carrying meanings both connotative (figurative) and denotative (literal). This research aims to unveil the connotative and denotative meanings in the song “Berita Kepada Kawan” by Ebiet G. Ade. The theoretical framework employed in this study is hermeneutic research. It is a qualitative study where the data consists of sentences containing connotative and denotative meanings, and the source of the data is the lyrics of the song "Berita Kepada Kawan" by Ebiet G. Ade. Data were collected through free engagement observation. The researcher browsed the lyrics of the song “Berita Kepada Kawan” by Ebiet G. Ade, then listened attentively to each word, phrase, sentence, and stanza of the lyrics. Subsequently, the researcher noted every sentence containing connotative and denotative meanings. Following this, data analysis was conducted, involving validation and classification of each sentence based on its type. The researcher then interpreted the data within its contextual framework. The results of the study indicate two meanings embedded in the song “Berita Kepada Kawan”, denotative and connotative. The denotative meaning portrays struggle, sadness, both mental and physical, while the connotative meaning depicts a solitary journey, sorrow, adversity, and loss of life. Thus, this hermeneutic research provides a profound understanding of the complexity of meanings in the song “Berita Kepada Kawan,” summarizing it within the conceptual framework of hermeneutics that includes both connotative and denotative analyses.

Abstract

This research explores the challenges faced by English teachers in secondary schools, focusing on language barriers and strategies to overcome them. In Indonesia, where English proficiency is limited outside of academic settings, students often struggle with effective communication and participation in English classes. Qualitative methods, including interviews and observations at SMP Negeri Molibagu, were employed to gather insights directly from teachers. These efforts aim to enhance student engagement and comprehension despite language barriers. Thematic analysis of interview and observation data reveals recurring patterns in teachers' experiences and practices, emphasizing the adaptation of teaching methods, collaborative efforts to supplement resources, and strategies to boost student confidence and motivation in English learning. By addressing these challenges, this study offers practical insights for educators and policymakers aiming to improve English language instruction in Indonesia, advocating for tailored strategies that support diverse student needs and promote inclusive learning environments.
