Abstract

This study aims to analyze the stylistic features of language in Qur'anic narratives and modern stories through the lens of Ilm al-Bayan as part of stylistics. A descriptive method is employed to compare the story of Prophet Musa and Khidr in the Qur'an with the short story Fī al-qiṭār by Mahmud Taymur. The study focuses on textual analysis to explore and compare the stylistic elements from the perspective of Ilm al-Bayan, using content analysis as the methodological approach. The Ilm al-Bayan framework is utilized to uncover the aesthetic aspects of language, the use of rhetorical devices, and the narrative structures that shape the meaning within both texts. The findings reveal that the Qur'anic story of Prophet Musa and Khidr is rich in moral messages, spiritual values, and rhetorical elegance through the use of similes, metaphors, and allegories. Meanwhile, Mahmud Taymur's Fī al-qiṭār showcases modern stylistic elements, emphasizing the details of social life through symbolism and allegory as mediums of expression. This study highlights that, despite their differing contexts—one rooted in the Qur'an and the other in modern literature—both texts exhibit a wealth of symbolic and figurative language to convey profound meanings, whether in spiritual or social dimensions. This research is expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of intertextuality and the application of Ilm al-Bayan in the analysis of classical and modern literature, while also strengthening the connection between Islamic and contemporary literature.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates Rithā’ al-Andalus by Abū al-Baqā’ al-Rundī through the semiotic lens of Charles Sanders Peirce to examine how poetic language communicates historical grief, spiritual identity, and collective memory. Composed in 1267 CE, the elegy laments the fall of Muslim Andalusia following the Christian reconquest. Beyond a personal outcry, the poem serves as a layered cultural document, encoding ideological resistance and loss through complex sign systems rooted in Islamic tradition and Andalusian history. The primary objective of this research is to analyze how Rithā’ al-Andalus employs Peirce’s triadic model of signs—icon, index, and symbol—to articulate themes of displacement, decline, and spiritual anguish. The study seeks to identify each type of sign within the poem and interpret its function in representing communal trauma and religious dislocation. This research adopts a qualitative interpretive approach. The original Arabic text is subjected to close reading, with poetic expressions classified based on Peircean categories. Each sign is interpreted within its historical, religious, and literary context, drawing on interdisciplinary scholarship in Islamic studies, medieval history, and Arabic poetics. The findings demonstrate that iconic signs evoke vivid visualizations of ruin and sorrow; indexical signs register the traces of temporal loss and cultural fracture; and symbolic signs encapsulate abstract notions of divine will, imperial collapse, and faith. Together, these elements construct a semiotic grammar of mourning. Ultimately, the study concludes that Rithā’ al-Andalus functions as more than a poetic elegy—it emerges as a symbolic archive of Andalusia’s fall and a resilient expression of Islamic identity through semiotic discourse.

Abstract

This study examines the Arabic language curriculum at the Mutawassiṭah level in relation to the development of listening skills (maharah istimāʿ). As one of the fundamental receptive skills, listening competence serves as the foundation for students’ overall language acquisition. Therefore, analyzing how the curriculum structure, objectives, and instructional content support the development of maharah istimāʿ is essential. This research employs a qualitative approach using document analysis of curriculum documents, syllabi, and Arabic language instructional materials at the Mutawassiṭah level. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and descriptive-analytical conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the curriculum incorporates objectives and content relevant to the development of listening skills across the affective, cognitive, and psychomotor domains. In the affective domain, the curriculum fosters students’ motivation and positive attitudes toward engaging in listening activities. In the cognitive domain, it emphasizes mastery of phonological features, vocabulary, and grammatical structures that underpin listening comprehension. In the psychomotor domain, structured listening exercises and guided practice are designed to enhance students’ ability to identify sounds, interpret spoken texts, and respond appropriately. Overall, the curriculum demonstrates alignment between learning objectives and instructional content in supporting the systematic development of maharah istimāʿ at the Mutawassiṭah level.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the design of the Arabic language curriculum by examining its components and relevance to 21st-century learning needs. The background of this research is based on the increasing demand for education that is responsive and adaptive to global challenges, particularly in the digital era and the Industrial Revolution 4.0. The research focuses on aligning Arabic language learning with essential skills of the 21st century, including critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, digital literacy, and cross-cultural competence. A qualitative descriptive method was employed by reviewing relevant literature, research findings, and policy documents on Arabic language education and curriculum innovation. The results indicate that the Arabic curriculum needs to integrate technology, project-based learning, and culturally contextual materials to enhance communication skills and real-world application among students. Furthermore, periodic teacher training is essential to master modern teaching methods and utilize supportive technologies effectively. Evaluation systems should also be more comprehensive by incorporating both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. This study concludes that the design of the Arabic language curriculum should not only serve as a guide for teaching but also as a strategic instrument to equip students with global competencies aligned with the demands of the 21st century.
