Spirituality in education has recently become an interesting topic and discussion in the field, demanding theory, practice, and even appreciation and real action. Education in Indonesia, especially religious education and Spirituality, as early as possible becomes the foundation and dimension of life with a fragmented understanding of experience and encounters with religious traditions. This article aims to investigate students’ understandings, both theory and perception, of Spirituality and religious education in the context of education. In-depth, structured, and semi-structured interviews were conducted for 120 students using a qualitative research design. They were led in this situation by using a Google form as a lens to gauge their comprehension of the research focus. The research results have shown some points. First, Spirituality and religious education are ill-defined abstract concepts. Second, there is a correlation between Spirituality and religious instruction. Third, religion and Spirituality are like an esophagus, an oasis in the digital age. Spirituality and religious education are polarized contextually.

Abstract

Background. Religious education plays a crucial role in shaping moral and cultural values, especially in diverse regions like Papua, Indonesia. Traditional methods of religious education may not adequately address the unique needs of Papuan youth, who are deeply rooted in local wisdom and cultural values. The development of an AI-based platform offers an innovative solution to personalize and enhance learning experiences, ensuring that religious teachings are relevant and engaging for this demographic. Purpose. This study aims to design and develop an AI-based platform that customizes learning experiences for Papuan youth, integrating religious education with local wisdom and cultural values. The platform seeks to improve learning engagement, foster a deeper understanding of religious teachings, and preserve cultural identity. Method. The research employed a design-based research methodology, combining AI algorithms, educational content analysis, and participatory design involving local educators and community leaders. The platform was tested with a sample group of Papuan youth to evaluate its effectiveness in personalizing learning experiences. Results. The AI-based platform demonstrated a significant increase in student engagement, with personalized content tailored to local customs and religious values. Feedback from participants indicated a strong connection between the learning material and their cultural identity. Conclusion. The AI-based platform is an effective tool for customizing religious education for Papuan youth, blending modern technology with traditional wisdom. This approach promotes a more engaging, culturally relevant, and personalized learning experience.

Abstract

Background. This research starts from concerns about the area along the Kahayan River, Central Kalimantan. From upstream to downstream, the river area is being heavily exploited, in the form of illegal gold mining carried out by the people themselves. The impacts are quite worrying, such as serious forest damage, polluted river water, people losing land for farming, rubber plantations being destroyed to make way for mining sites, and the loss of livelihoods for fishermen (river fishers). Purpose. The aim of this research is to explore the role or participation of the Palangkaraya Diocese Catholic Church in responding to and overcoming the negative impacts of environmental exploitation along the Kahayan River. Method. This research uses a qualitative approach method. The research locations are in Sepang District, Gunung Mas Regency and Banama Tingang District, Pulang Pisau Regency. Our informants: Mining Community, Catholic Church Hierarchy, Central Kalimantan Environmental Service, Gunung Mas and Pulang Pisau government officials, and local traditional leaders. Results. The results of this research found that the Palangkaraya Diocese Church has great potential in overcoming the negative impacts of environmental exploitation on the Kahayan River. Through outreach, awareness campaigns and religious teachings, the Church makes people aware of the importance of environmental conservation. As a facilitator, the Church bridges collaboration between government, communities and organizations for environmental preservation. Financial support and resources from the congregation are also considered important elements. With these steps, the Church plays a strategic role in protecting the environment and collective prosperity. Conclusion. The Palangkaraya Diocese Church plays an important role in overcoming the impacts of environmental exploitation on the Kahayan River by integrating social teachings, building collaboration, and raising support for environmental preservation and community welfare.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the synergy between catechesis and pastoral ministry in the context of how shamanism and magic practices affect the religious life of the Malind-Anim tribe in St. Antonius Kaisa Station, St. Peter and Paul Parish, Archdiocese of Merauke. The method used is descriptive qualitative research with ethnographic and grounded theory methods. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with religious leaders, traditional leaders, and members of the Malind-Anim community. Data analysis was conducted thematically with a focus on how the implications of shamanism and magic practices shape the dynamics of faith and community participation. The findings show that shamanism and magic practices are still an integral part of the traditional belief system that influences the religious life of the Malind-Anim tribe. The synergy of contextual catechesis and pastoral care provides a space for dialogue and integration of Catholic values with local wisdom, thus opening up opportunities for spiritual renewal without neglecting cultural identity. In addition, adaptive pastoral strategies and dialogical catechesis are effective solutions in facing the challenges of inculturation. The practical implications of this research suggest that a humanistic and contextual catechetical-pastoral approach can strengthen the involvement of the Malind-Anim people in church life while respecting their cultural heritage.

Abstract

This research analyzes the values of natural harmony in the cosmology of the Marind people of South Papua. The research object was carried out on LMA Marind and priests in the Merauke Archdiocese using a qualitative approach. The findings explain that deforestation due to the conversion of natural forests into large plantations in Merauke, South Papua has threatened the socio-cultural survival of the Marind tribe. The loss of forests as a basis for their ecological and spiritual adaptation is contrary to the principles of ecological justice and environmental sustainability in Laudato Si. Pope Francis emphasized that the earth is the common home of humanity which must be protected for the benefit of all generations. Inclusive development policy reform is needed in Merauke by meeting the needs of indigenous communities and restoring natural habitats as the main orientation, not just the interests of investors. Also, political empowerment of local communities to have control over their customary lands. Harmonization of nature conservation, the human rights of indigenous peoples, and the sustainability of cultural heritage are key amidst investment expansion. Full involvement of the indigenous Marind tribe with high understanding and responsibility is a requirement for ecological-socio-cultural sustainability in Merauke. Marind traditional ecological findings, 1) connectedness with the universe, 2) ecology is part of ancestral traditions and wisdom, 3) ecology is the balance of the ecosystem, 4) ecology is dependence on rivers and seas, 5) ecology is a connection with the supernatural.
