Abstract

The research aimed to assess the effectiveness of community education and training programs in enhancing public knowledge and practices regarding organic and inorganic waste management in Gunung Remuk Village, Ketapang, Kalipuro, Banyuwangi. The study utilized a participatory approach, involving workshops and training sessions focused on the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Data was gathered through surveys and direct observation before and after the intervention. The findings indicated a significant increase in awareness among participants regarding the negative impacts of improper waste disposal and the importance of segregation. Post-program assessments revealed a notable improvement in waste sorting practices at the household level, contributing to cleaner and more sustainable local environments. Furthermore, there was a noticeable reduction in waste volume disposed of improperly, highlighting the effectiveness of recycling and reuse initiatives introduced during the program. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that targeted education and training programs can effectively empower communities to actively participate in environmental preservation efforts. By enhancing knowledge and fostering behavioral changes towards sustainable waste management practices, these initiatives not only improve local environmental quality but also promote broader societal benefits. Continued support and collaboration among local governments, communities, and private sectors are crucial for sustaining and scaling such programs to achieve long-term environmental sustainability goals.

Abstract

This community empowerment program through waste management using a waste bank system in Bulusan Village, Kalipuro District, Banyuwangi, was implemented to address the increasing volume of household waste and the community’s limited awareness of waste sorting and its economic potential. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach consisting of needs assessment, joint planning, training, and participatory evaluation. The results show a substantial improvement in waste-sorting behavior, increasing from 23% of households before the intervention to 67% after training. Participation in the waste bank also increased from 15 to 58 households. Within the first three weeks of operation, the waste bank collected 126 kg of plastic, 89 kg of paper, and 17 kg of metal, generating an additional collective income of Rp 1,230,000. Training sessions improved managerial and digital recording skills, with 90% of participants successfully using digital forms for waste savings accounts. The program also stimulated positive social change, including increased daily waste separation habits (74%) and enhanced community interaction (67%). These findings align with prior studies (Fitria, 2024; Sudrajat, 2024; Subekti, 2024), confirming that managerial capacity, digitalization, and community participation are key factors for successful waste bank implementation. Overall, the program positively contributed to environmental improvement and household economic income while strengthening community commitment to sustainable waste management.

Abstract

Ports play a strategic role in global trade as key gateways in international supply chain flows, yet they often become bottlenecks when operational capacity fails to meet increasing cargo volumes. This study investigates the critical factors influencing cargo handling performance at port terminals using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach to synthesize findings from reputable scholarly databases published between 2015 and 2024. The review identifies four dominant determinants: infrastructure and equipment, human resources (HR) capability, information technology adoption, and operational management systems. Results show that ports with adequate quay cranes, sufficient berth capacity, and compatible water depth achieve higher Box per Hour (BPH) and Ton per Hour (TPH) productivity. HR competency, particularly among stevedores, also strongly influences operational speed and safety, highlighting the importance of upskilling and technology-oriented training. Furthermore, integrated Terminal Operating Systems (TOS), digital documentation, and real-time tracking significantly reduce waiting times and administrative errors, although digitalization gaps remain evident in developing countries. Effective operational management—such as vessel scheduling, queue control, and safety governance—further enhances overall productivity and reduces turnaround time. The findings reveal strong interdependence among all four factors, confirming that cargo handling performance is system-dependent rather than isolated. Research gaps emerge in the areas of behavioral HR studies, multi-agency collaborative governance, and the integration of data analytics into port operations. This study provides a comprehensive framework to guide policymakers and port operators in formulating holistic strategies to improve terminal efficiency and strengthen national logistics competitiveness.
