Abstract

This study explores the psychological impacts of balancing career and parenting responsibilities among female lecturers in tertiary institutions in Anambra and Enugu States, Nigeria. The research investigates the stressors that female lecturers face while managing their academic roles and parenting duties, and examines the support provided by tertiary institutions in mitigating these challenges. The study used a descriptive survey approach. The research covered various government-owned institutions, including Nnamdi Azikiwe University, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and others. Data were collected from 2,297 female lecturers using a validated 4-point Likert scale questionnaire. Analysis involved descriptive statistics and Welch’s ANOVA due to violations of normality and homogeneity of variances. Ethical considerations included obtaining consent from institutional leaders and addressing socio-cultural biases. The findings reveal that female lecturers experience significant psychological distress, including stress, emotional exhaustion, and burnout, due to the dual demands of work and family. Key stressors include long working hours, family responsibilities, childcare challenges, and social expectations of perfect performance. Furthermore, the study identifies the role of tertiary institutions in alleviating these stressors, such as offering flexible work schedules, childcare services, and mentorship programs. Despite these efforts, the study suggests that more comprehensive policies and support systems are needed to improve the work-life balance of female lecturers. The study concludes with recommendations for enhancing institutional support to foster better psychological well-being among female academics.

Abstract

The most significant challenges for education systems in the post-COVID-19 context have emerged in the areas of child health and sustainable living. This paper aims to investigate the ways through which school counselors contribute to the promotion of sustainability for the benefit of students’ welfare and future. Mental health and environmental problems are becoming intertwined; thus, school counselors play a crucial role in linking sustainability to psychosocial care. The study adopted a descriptive survey design with a sample of 177 participants comprising teachers, students, and members of a selected community. Data gathering was done using a structured questionnaire adapted from Google Forms. The questionnaire used a 4-point Likert scale to capture the level of awareness, implementation, and results of sustainability practices. To increase the validity of the instrument measuring the level of academic stress, the Scale of Academic Stress was reviewed by several experts in educational psychology and counseling. Reliability was determined to have robust validity with a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.82, which is the result of the assessment of the stability and reliability of the measurement of the study’s constructs. Descriptive analysis was done in SPSS version 26. Mental health challenges that have been worsened by the pandemic are discussed and the ways that school counselors manage them as they support education that fosters responsible behavior are discussed in the study. Such strategies comprise psychological treatment, personal development education, and coordination with teachers and parents to design a supportive school environment. The research also reveals that due to counselor’s many roles, they can largely contribute to promoting student resilience and a sustainable culture to improve child foolishness and livelihoods.

Abstract

Stress among working students arises due to the dual demands of academic and professional responsibilities. This study aimed to explore the role of Islamic spirituality in managing stress among working students. The research approach used a qualitative phenomenological method involving in-depth interviews with five working college student participants. Data were analysed using thematic analysis to identify patterns in their experiences. The results showed that Islamic spiritual practices such as prayer, supplication, remembering Allah Swt (dhikr), and understanding concepts such as tawakal and qadar play an important role in reducing stress, increasing inner peace, mental resilience and optimism in the face of academic and professional pressures. In addition, support from the Muslim community also contributes to lowering anxiety and motivating them to overcome challenges. This study concludes that Islamic spirituality is an effective coping strategy for working university students in managing stress. The findings enrich the existing literature on the relationship between spirituality and stress management and offer practical implications for educational institutions to design holistic support programs that help students maintain academic, professional, and mental well-being.

Abstract

Early family dynamics and upbringing play a vital role in shaping adult relationship patterns. Childhood experiences—such as emotional climate, communication styles, and parental interactions—can significantly influence how individuals develop trust, manage emotions, and resolve conflicts later in life. This study employed a descriptive survey design to examine how these early influences affect adult relationships among 101 participants aged 18 and above in Anambra State, Nigeria. A stratified random sampling method ensured representation across age and gender. Data were collected through the validated Family Dynamics and Adult Relationship Patterns Scale (FDARPS), using a 4-point Likert scale (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.77). Findings revealed that parenting style (M = 3.02), sibling relationships (M = 2.65), and childhood attachment (M = 2.52) significantly shaped adult interpersonal styles, while early interactions and family stability had less impact. Positive upbringing elements—such as parental support (M = 2.97), role models (M = 2.87), and early encouragement (M = 2.88)—fostered healthy relationships, whereas open communication (M = 1.77) was less influential. Common adaptive strategies among those with dysfunctional family backgrounds included mindfulness (M = 3.08), support groups (M = 3.06), and therapy (M = 3.01). ANOVA results indicated significant effects of age and age-gender interactions, but not gender alone. The study concludes that early family experiences significantly shape adult relational outcomes. It recommends that families, educators, and counselors emphasize emotional support, healthy communication, and positive role modeling to nurture stronger future relationships.

Abstract

Background: Losing a spouse is one of life’s most devastating experiences, particularly when the loss occurs suddenly or through violence. The mode of death can significantly shape the bereavement process and emotional recovery. Objective: This study aimed to examine differences in grief and trauma responses among bereaved partners who experienced either sudden or violent spousal loss. Method: The research employed a descriptive survey design and was conducted in Anambra State, Nigeria, with 67 purposively selected participants aged 18 and above. Data were collected via a structured online questionnaire that included demographic items and standardized grief and trauma measures (reliability coefficients α = 0.87 and α = 0.89, respectively). The analysis utilized SPSS v25, including descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and MANOVA, with a 0.05 significance level. Results: Individuals who experienced violent spousal loss reported significantly higher levels of grief, including emotional numbness (M = 3.40), a sense of life being meaningless (M = 3.70), and social isolation (M = 3.30) compared to those who experienced sudden loss, t(65) = -2.15, p = .036. However, trauma levels did not differ significantly between the groups (p = .577). Distinct patterns emerged: violent loss was associated with emotional detachment and concentration difficulties, while sudden loss was linked to more frequent unwanted memories. Conclusion: The study concludes that the nature of spousal loss has a greater impact on grief than trauma. These findings suggest that grief responses vary significantly depending on whether the loss was sudden or violent. Contribution: The findings contribute to the development of more effective emotional care strategies for the bereaved, ensuring that interventions are better suited to the emotional needs of individuals experiencing different types of spousal loss.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology and the widespread use of social media have introduced new challenges for parents in guiding their children's moral development. This study explores the patterns of parental guidance in shaping children's morality within the context of social media use and examines its impact on their moral growth. Employing a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, the research was conducted with parents residing in Citeureup Village, North Cimahi District. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, and then analyzed using data reduction, validation, and conclusion-drawing techniques. The findings reveal three primary patterns of parental guidance: preventive, persuasive, and collaborative. These strategies are actively utilized by parents to nurture their children's moral awareness in the digital age. The study concludes that parental presence and active engagement play a crucial role in children's moral development—particularly in shaping ethical behavior, social interaction, and a sense of responsibility—ultimately fostering more thoughtful and responsible digital citizens. This research offers valuable insights for parents, educators, and policymakers in developing effective strategies to support moral and character education in the digital era.

Abstract

Many elementary school pupils face emotional, social, and behavioral challenges that can negatively affect their academic performance and overall development. Despite this, counseling services are often underutilized or absent in early education, leaving gaps in pupils’ social-emotional support. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and was conducted among teachers and professional counsellors in Anambra State. Data were collected electronically using Google Form from 85 respondents categorized by years of experience. A structured questionnaire measured counseling integration, its impact on pupils’ socio emotional development, and its educational implications. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA at 0.05 significance level. Eighty-five respondents participated, with most having less than five years of experience (35.3%), followed by 15 to 25 years (30.6%). Findings showed strong agreement that counseling was integrated through structured activities, collaboration, timetable inclusion, and management support, though classroom integration of guidance topics was weaker. Integrated counseling positively influenced pupils’ emotional stability, relationships, and participation, though its effect on behavioral reduction was modest. Respondents also agreed that counseling strengthened discipline and overall school performance. ANOVA results revealed significant differences based on years of experience across all three hypotheses, leading to rejection of the null hypotheses. The study concludes that policymakers, educators, and school administrators must prioritize counseling integration to cultivate emotionally resilient, socially competent, and academically motivated pupils, thereby laying a firm foundation for lifelong learning.

Abstract

The rapid adoption of digital technologies in teaching and learning has increased the need for inclusive leadership that ensures equal access to digital learning opportunities for all students. However, poor infrastructure, inadequate funding, and gender disparities in leadership practices continue to hinder the effective implementation of inclusive digital platforms in Nigeria. This study examined leadership strategies for implementing inclusive digital platforms for deep learning in secondary schools in Anambra State, Nigeria, with particular attention to gender differences among school leaders. A descriptive and comparative research design was adopted. A purposive sample of 70 school leaders, comprising 26 males and 44 females, participated in the study. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire measuring inclusion practices, engagement strategies, and implementation challenges. The instrument yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.87. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Mann–Whitney U test. Findings revealed that male leaders reported higher levels of inclusion promotion (3.65 vs. 3.25), stronger student engagement strategies (3.92 vs. 3.18), and greater concern over poor internet connectivity (3.31 vs. 2.59) than female leaders. Significant gender differences were found in inclusion practices, engagement strategies, and implementation challenges (U = 262.000; 289.500; 313.500, p = 0.001), leading to the rejection of all null hypotheses. The study concluded that gender and leadership style significantly influence the successful adoption of inclusive digital learning platforms. It further established that inadequate funding, poor connectivity, and limited assistive technologies remain major barriers. The study recommends gender-responsive leadership training, equitable allocation of digital resources, improved internet infrastructure, and sustained professional development for school leaders to strengthen inclusive digital platform adoption in secondary schools.

Abstract

The problem of cyberbullying has been gaining momentum in modern society because of the dynamic development of digital technologies and the extensive use of social media by adolescents. This paper thus examined the parental cognition and reaction to cyberbullying of Nigerian parents with a particular emphasis on Anambra State. The research design in the study was a qualitative one, based on a phenomenological approach to reflect the experiences of parents. Purposive selection of parents with children in secondary schools was done (30 parents). The collection of data was done via semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis was used to analyze the data and determine patterns and themes that were recurring. Results showed that parental awareness of cyberbullying was skewed with some parents having high to low levels of understanding of cyberbullying. Most parents used informal sources of information like social media, children and peer discussions. Even though the majority of the participants were aware of cyberbullying as a negative factor that adversely affects the emotional and psychological health of adolescents, some of them still did not consider it as a serious issue in relation to physical bullying. Responses by the parents were in the form of counseling, limiting use of the devices, monitoring, and reporting to the schools, but these were usually hampered by the lack of digital literacy, secrecy by children, and insufficient organizational support. The paper concludes that parents have a growing awareness of cyberbullying but there are still critical areas of knowledge and effective intervention techniques.
