Abstract

Modernism and puritanism in Islam are two approaches that have had a significant influence on the development of Muslim religious thought and practice. Modernism in Islam refers to a movement that aims to interpret religious teachings in accordance with the context of the times, emphasizing rationality, science, and openness to social change. The movement often sought to bridge traditional values with the demands of modernity, giving birth to figures such as Muhammad Abduh and Jamaluddin al-Afghani who pushed for educational, legal and social reforms. In contrast, puritanism in Islam focuses on purifying religious teachings from practices that are considered deviant or bid'ah, and returning to the primary sources, namely the Qur'an and Sunnah. Puritanism is often associated with movements that emphasize literality in understanding religious texts and reject outside cultural influences that are considered to undermine the purity of Islam. An example of a puritanical movement is Wahhabism that developed in the Arabian Peninsula. These two approaches often interact dynamically, both in the form of dialog and conflict, in an effort to find the best format to maintain the relevance of Islam in the modern era. This research analyzes the ideological roots, main figures, and practical implications of modernism and puritanism in shaping Muslim religious identity. By understanding these two movements, it is hoped to create a broader insight in managing the diversity of perspectives in Islam, so that it can be the basis for the development of inclusive and progressive Islamic thought.

Abstract

This research aims to compare the role of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah in politics in Indonesia. This study belongs to library study research type of research conducted to write, clarify, and collect data from many reported data sources, both unwritten and written. The data were collected through the so-called literature study. Citing and analyzing data with this documentation technique aims to search, collect, and process data from written documents such as books, journals, and other written sources. The results revealed that NU and Muhammadiyah have depicted their respective roles in politics in Indonesia since their inception. The differences could be seen from several comparisons, such as ideology, background, reasons for formation, and orientation. Moreover, NU and Muhammadiyah have provided a tangible impact on Indonesian society. Subsequently, the differences in ideology have had a different impact in politics.

Abstract

Cultural Islam and structural Islam are two approaches that reflect the dynamics of Islam in society. Cultural Islam Refers to religious expressions that are integrated with local culture, such as traditions, arts and customs. This approach emphasizes harmony between Islamic values ​​and cultural identity, making it more flexible in responding to social change. Meanwhile, structural Islam is more oriented towards systems and institutions, such as politics, economics and law. This approach aims to build a social order that is in accordance with Islamic principles through formal policies and regulations. This research aims to analyze the interaction and contribution of these two approaches in building a balanced life for Muslims between spiritual values ​​and social needs. This study uses a qualitative method with a text analysis approach and in-depth interviews with the main actors in each approach. The research results show that cultural Islam and structural Islam do not conflict with each other, but rather complement each other. Cultural Islam strengthens the spiritual and emotional aspects of society, while structural Islam provides a normative and regulative basis for society's life. In conclusion, integration between cultural Islam and structural Islam can be a solution to face the challenges of modernity without abandoning Islamic values. The synergy between the two is able to create harmony between local traditions and global demands, making Islam an inclusive and relevant religion in various contexts of life.

Abstract

Fundamentalism is one of the schools of thought that does not want to accept change in the sense that they oppose renewal. So, they carefully emphasize that the announcement of the prophethood of Muhammad SAW is not something new, but only continues the series of prophets and apostles who preceded him. Meanwhile, radicalism is a group that is often viewed by the West as a terrorist who aims to weaken political authority through jihad. This means that these radical religious movements make jihad one of the methods to achieve their ideals, namely the Islamic system (al-nizām al-Islāmi). In addition, radicals are considered narrow- minded, overly enthusiastic (ultra zeolous), or want to achieve their goals by using violent means. Therefore, it is understandable why most Muslim scholars view radicalism as an unfavorable term and cause misunderstanding. This view is also found in orientalists and Western scholars who understand Islam.

Abstract

Liberal Islamic philosophy is a contemporary concept within the Islamic world, arising as a counter to the prevailing association of Islam with radicalism, terrorism, and bloodshed. This new philosophy has a more lenient stance towards Islam's normative beliefs, aiming to engage with the perspectives of orthodox or fundamentalist Islamic organizations. This has provoked both favorable and adverse reactions to the theory. This page aims to portray liberal Islamic thinking academically and objectively, without taking a side in the controversies. The discourse encompasses the concept, aims, and epistemological framework of liberal Islam. The importance of this study stems from the perspectives of observers of Islamic thinking who either support or oppose liberal Islamic philosophy without offering a comprehensive comprehension of its fundamental notions.

Abstract

Islam is a holistic religion, covering various dimensions of life that are harmoniously integrated. The dimensions of Islam consist of aspects of faith (belief), worship (ritual), morality (morality), and muamalah (social interaction). In the dimension of faith, Islam emphasizes faith in Allah, angels, holy books, apostles, the last days, and destiny, which are the spiritual foundation of every Muslim. The dimension of worship includes the practice of Islamic teachings in the form of formal rituals such as prayer, fasting, zakat, and hajj, which not only bring individuals closer to Allah, but also strengthen social solidarity. On the moral dimension, Islam teaches universal moral values, such as honesty, patience, and justice, which form the noble character of the individual. Meanwhile, the muamalah dimension includes the procedures for social, economic, and political interaction, which is based on the principles of justice, balance, and mutual benefit. These four dimensions complement each other, creating a balanced framework of life between a vertical relationship with God and a horizontal relationship with fellow humans and the environment. This research aims to explore the meaning, function, and relevance of the Islamic dimensions in modern life. With a descriptive qualitative approach, the results of the study show that a comprehensive understanding of the dimensions of Islam can be a solution to various contemporary challenges, such as moral crises, social inequality, and environmental degradation. This study recommends the holistic application of Islamic values in daily life to create a civilized social order.

Abstract

Studi tentang hadits sangat penting dalam ilmu keislaman, karena hadits merupakan sumber hukum Islam kedua setelah Al-Qur’an. Hadits terdiri dari perkataan, perbuatan, dan persetujuan Nabi Muhammad (SAW). Memahami komponen-komponen hadits, seperti sanad (rantai perawi) dan matan (isi), sangat penting untuk menilai keaslian dan penerapannya. Artikel ini membahas unsur-unsur hadits dan signifikansinya dalam fiqih Islam. Artikel ini mengeksplorasi metodologi yang digunakan untuk menilai kredibilitas perawi dan konsistensi isi hadits, menyoroti pentingnya unsur-unsur ini dalam menjaga integritas ajaran Islam. Studi ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, menganalisis berbagai sumber ilmiah untuk memberikan pemahaman komprehensif tentang topik tersebut. Temuan penelitian menekankan pentingnya pemeriksaan yang ketat dalam transmisi hadits untuk memastikan keaslian keputusan hukum Islam

Abstract

Ilmu hadis merupakan disiplin ilmu dalam studi Islam yang membahas autentisitas, transmisi, dan pemahaman hadis Nabi Muhammad SAW. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi cabang-cabang utama dalam ilmu hadis serta menjelaskan peran dan kontribusinya dalam menjaga integritas sumber ajaran Islam. Metode yang digunakan adalah studi kepustakaan dengan pendekatan kualitatif-deskriptif, melalui analisis literatur klasik dan kontemporer yang relevan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ilmu hadis terdiri dari beberapa cabang utama, antara lain: Ilmu Rijal al-Hadith (biografi perawi), Ilmu Jarh wa Ta’dil (evaluasi kredibilitas perawi), Ilmu Takhrij (penelusuran sanad), Ilmu Mustalah al-Hadith (terminologi hadis), dan Ilmu Ilal al-Hadith (identifikasi cacat tersembunyi dalam hadis). Setiap cabang memiliki fungsi spesifik dalam menilai keabsahan dan kualitas hadis, serta saling melengkapi dalam proses verifikasi hadis. Kesimpulannya, pemahaman yang komprehensif terhadap cabang-cabang ilmu hadis sangat penting untuk memastikan keotentikan dan validitas hadis sebagai sumber hukum dan ajaran Islam.

Abstract

Kajian terhadap kualitas hadis merupakan aspek fundamental dalam studi ilmu hadis. Kualitas hadis menentukan kedudukannya sebagai sumber hukum Islam setelah Al-Qur'an. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi konsep kualitas hadis melalui penelusuran terhadap kriteria yang digunakan oleh para ulama dalam mengklasifikasikan hadis sebagai shahih, hasan, atau dha'if, serta dilengkapi dengan dalil-dalil dari Al-Qur'an dan Sunnah. Metodologi yang digunakan dalam artikel ini adalah studi pustaka dengan pendekatan analitis-kritis. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa kualitas hadis sangat ditentukan oleh dua aspek utama: sanad dan matan, yang masing-masing memiliki parameter khusus dalam menentukan validitas hadis. Temuan ini memiliki implikasi signifikan terhadap otoritas hadis dalam hukum Islam dan praktik keagamaan umat Islam.
